There’s a tradition in the Navy called tie cutting that dates back to the very early days of Naval Aviation. Back in the World War 1 era, there wasn’t any push to talk interphone in the cockpit. The instructor’s only option to get the students attention was to reach up and yank on their scarf. When the student was ready to solo, their instructor would cut their scarf (and then later their tie) to signify that they were safe to fly on their own. How much tie was left for the student after it was cut signified how much the instructor trusted their student though because if they left a good amount they could still reach and grab for it. I have now cut many of my student’s ties. Couldn’t resist another one of the Orange and Black Strat-o-Timer. Such a vintage aesthetic with the mini-turtle case and a very unconventional bezel color. That 7 link Jubilee style bracelet is supremely comfortable. The best part about this color too is it’s not a play on someone else’s ideas. Not at all to say that only one brand is allowed to make a Red and Blue bezel because of course that’s crazy. Every time you sit on that seat there’s a confidence that comes from knowing that it can save your life in extremis but also a healthy dose of fear. If you have to pull that handle you know that you’re going to be subjected to the forces of a car crash to get you out of the plane alive.
