Eclectic Sunday: a great throwback to the reawakening time of mechanical watchmaking - the 1990 years when now famed watchmakers or independent brands like François-Paul Journe, Cedric Johner, De Behune or Roger Dubuis made their first idiosyncratic steps. Today we like to feature a classic Roger Dubuis Hommage 37 chronograph in rose gold, a perfect example of the unfortunately gone early days of the brand. Mr Dubuis set out to create ‘classic watches with a soul’, more vibrant interpretations particularly of the restrained Patek Philipe style. All of his watches were tightly limited, featured beautifully finished ‘vintage’ movements (here a Lemania 2310) that carried the Poinçon de Genève and also a chronometer certificate by the Besançon Observatory. The sapphire timing dial is supported by specially developed internal unidirectional turning ring system and is controlled by a separate crown at 4 o’clock. As common to MING watches, there’s lots of bright lume (even on the timing crown for easy identification under water) and an equal measure of 3D effects. It comes on a new 20mm rubber strap which is comfortable not only due to the supple FKM rubber, but also thanks to an elaborate mould which gives it a 3D curved shape. Movement us a customised partly skeletonise Sellita SW 300.M1, the steel case has a diameter of 38mm. 500 pieces will be made this year. MING came into possession of a very small number of vintage Venus 140 monopusher chronograph movements. This column-wheel movement is quite special as it has all the chronograph mechanism located at the dial side, and then also comes with an eccentric time display at 12 o’clock, emphasising the chronograph function. MING overhauled the movements technically but left the patina intact. TGIF! As the weather is rapidly getting nicer and nicer, it’s time to undust our sports equipment! As a fitting watch, we recently had the chance to handle the new Tudor Pelagos FXD ‘Cycling Edition’ Chronograph specifically made with bicycle racing in mind (Tudor is official timekeeper of the famous Giro d’Italia and has its own Pro Cycling team). The watch has number of features streamlined for cycling: - a light carbon composite case, 43mm diameter, with solid integrated strap bars (so only Nato or other Velcro straps can be used) for extra robustness - the tachymeter scale is specifically calibrated to show speeds cyclist race at - large solid ceramic luminous hour indices To be frank, such a watch is a bit difficult to appreciate. The lack of heft and the sharp and at time a bit plasticky feel of the carbon case, combined with the dark colour theme made us miss the emotional impact. On the other hand, its really light, instantly readable and comes with an utility one fully realises only when wearing it for sports. It was and still is to support good causes: a charity project from Ireland, an independent watch festival in Ireland as well and the next steps of a young watchmaker/lady from Switzerland. Chopard’s new Alpine Eagle XL Chrono in rose gold isn’t exactly a completely new watch, but one where the manufacturer demonstrated their attention to the detail: be it the fine integration of the pushers into the crown protectors, the perfectly aligned ‘screws’ (well, we are sure they use the same trick here as others 😉) or subtle aspects on the dial (like the red tips for the chrono hands, the colour-matched date disk or the different shades of the dial prints (slightly blue for the chrono dials, white luminous for the seconds)): (Almost) wherever you look, you’ll notice that ‘someone’ thought about it! However, the rose gold bracelet is not the last word when it comes to such (its comfortable and looks great with the watch but it didn’t leave a lasting impression and unfortunately doesn’t have a fine adjust system nor is it quick release of any kind), yet it adds balance and distributes the weight of the massive amount of gold nicely around the wrist. The Academia Tourbillon Rattrapante is based on a vintage Venus 185 split-seconds movement which as such is a beauty. Here, DeWitt modified it with a date and a moon-phase display as well as with a tourbillon. But the real mastery here is the implementation (just look at that gorgeous and unusual diamond-studded tourbillon bridge!) particularly at the dial side: there is a subtle hand-guilloché, done in-house on Mr de Witt’s collection of rose engines, and the clever use of surface texture and reflections. Eclectic Sunday: Let’s go truly handmade with Masahiro Kikuno’s Tourbillon. Here we see the result of an immensely talented watchmaker who found himself awestruck by an ancient complicated Japanese clock which was all done by hand and simple tools. Now he wanted to achieve something himself in a similar ‘frugal’ manner… Out came his Tourbillon, which is unusual in many ways. All parts sawn and filed by hand, including the tourbillon cage, and decorated the same way. Kikuno draws ample inspiration from nature (recall his other watches…), and for this watch he looked at the oceans and devised a movement decoration himself which recalls the bone structure of a herring fish - all done manually (swipe for photos of a close-up and of the finishing process). Gerald Genta‘s most famous design needed a couple of years to get collectors to recognise its excellence (would that have failed we‘d wager the guess that Genta wouldn’t be as celebrated as he is today). The recipe seem simple with the octagonal shape, but here execution is key. Particularly the case doesn’t respond well to poor refinishing attempts (we heard that even AP at times would send cases to a specialist in Austria if refinishing got too tricky). Also the logo at 6 o‘clock creates a challenge as the hour hand passes over it and hence there’s very little clearance. Speedmaster, etc. Last year we have seen the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms with Swatch’s Sistem51 automatic movement, which caused quite some uproar amongst collectors. We finally had the chance to try the newest Blancpain x Swatch Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Ocean Of Storms model from January, and we have to say… ‘not that bad, actually…’ It gets you to a surpassingly large extend to the iconic Blancpain, save materials and movement of course which still offer significant difference. Good they opened the caseback because else on passing view one could not immediately discern it from ‚the real deal‘… So its fun, its stylish and feel robust enough - all score features that score high on a ‘strap it on and forget it’ weekend watch, don’t they? Actually, only the movement is from that year. It was made in 12 specimens to compete at the then regular chronometer competitions, and one watch of this set scored the all time precision record for wristwatches at the Geneva Observatory in 1950. The movements were encased only much later, in the 1980s years, and sold to savvy collectors. Traditional crafts - always with a ‘classic’ outcome? Surely not if you use them in creative ways. Today we show you two watches using guilloché and engraving with unusual designs and outcomes, both from Louis Erard: First comes the Guilloché Main II with a very graphic and architectural hand-guilloché pattern which to us is a refreshing departure from the surely beautiful but all too often also quite similar ‘traditional’ engine-turned dials. We appreciate that LE tried to depart from the known paths and used the technique for something with a clear unique, contemporary character. Second is LE’s signature Le Régulateur watch here with a dial design that has been created by atelier oï, a Swiss architecture and design studio.
