In a major new co-production between Theatre Centre and Sheffield Theatres, Katie Redford’s ‘Wish You Weren’t Here’ visited Colyton Grammar School this week. It tells the story of 16-year-old Mila and her mother Lorna, who whilst on a holiday to their favourite seaside town, discover that their relationship needs just as much attention as the run downtown. Lorna wants to reconnect, Mila wants the world to stop burning, and for that Beach Body Ready poster to disappear. ‘Wish You Weren’t Here’ is a hilarious exploration of family relationships, growing up and finding your way in the world when you think that you are not good enough. Students from Years 9 and 10 were treated to a performance by Eleanor Henderson and Olivia Pentelow, followed by a Q&A. Year 10 students then attended a workshop with the pair, using parts of the play’s script to build on their own partner work. #colytongrammarschool #cgs #theatrecentre #sheffieldtheatres #theatre #drama #dramaworkshop https://www.colytongrammar.com/131/latest-news/post/487/students-enjoy-performance-and-drama-workshop

Off stage: Friends! Co-creators! Passable as decent human beings! Our characters on stage: not so much. . We first discussed writing a play together during our monthly pandemic phone calls. We vowed that whatever we wrote would have NOTHING to do with the pandemic. So we wrote a show about being isolated together in a room… But not because of a disease - just because of a fun-filled, good old fashioned murder! . We met 15 years ago in Level B improv classes at The Second City. At the time, we were both jobless and helped form our first sketch troupe, Warm Summer Hotness. Then we got jobs. Good jobs. Ones we liked and were excited for. Then, in some magical synching of big corporate deals, we both accepted buy-out packages from our lucrative careers. And found ourselves unemployed at the same time again… . We wanted to use this time, when the work section of our brains is vacant, to write our own comedic play. Fans of mystery since childhood, with respective obsessions with Clue and Nancy Drew, a murder mystery comedy seemed like a fun and challenging place to start. And we think we succeeded! We hope our play brings you all the wonderful gasps, laughs and escapism both murder mysteries and comedies have to offer. . We’d love to see you there. April 25-27. Ticket link in bio.

A Nightwood Theatre production in association with VideoCabaret Mad Madge Written by Rose Napoli | Directed by Andrea Donaldson Meet Margaret Cavendish, 17th-century philosopher, poet, playwright – a scandalous Jill-of-all-Trades and mistress of none. In her unapologetic pursuit of fame, Madge ditches her dysfunctional family to join the court of an unruly Queen and leave her mark on history. Paying homage to Jane Austen and Tina Fey in the same breath, this laugh out loud contemporary-period mashup suggests that perhaps a woman’s hunger for unbridled attention is not so shallow, after all. For Rose Napoli: Dora Award nomination for Outstanding New Play for Lo (or Dear Mr. Wells) Dora Award nomination for Outstanding Performance in The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh One of NOW Magazine’s Top Ten Theatre Artists “Rose Napoli’s Catherine is, dare I say, perfect” – Intermission Magazine on Wildwoman Credits Written by Rose Napoli Directed by Andrea Donaldson Starring Rose Napoli, Karl Ang, Wayne Burns, Izad Etemadi, Farhang Ghajar, and Nancy Palk Designed by Astrid Janson and Abby Esteireiro Stage Manager: Hannah MacMillan Production Manager: Maya Royer Production Consultant: Pip Bradford Sound Design: Olivia Wheeler* Lighting Design: Rebecca Vandevelde Props and Wardrobe Build by: Merle Harley Costume Builder: Alessia Urbani Producer/Publicist: Victoria Laberge April 9-20, 2024 Franco Boni Theatre 1115 Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario M6J 1J1 https://theatrecentre.org/tickets/?eid=110733 Supported by Toronto Arts Council with funding from the City of Toronto. Our final student exhibition of the academic year. Two public history students researched and cataloged a selection of records relating to Theatre in Education (TIE) from the 1970s & 1980s within the Archive of artist, designer and landscape theatre pioneer Bill Mitchell. In the early part of his career Bill Mitchell worked with a number of theatre companies where TIE, was a focus. These include Perspectives Theatre (Also known as Key Perspectives), Theatre Centre, Theatre Foundry and Roundabout Theatre in Education where traditional tales & educational ideas were viewed with a new lens alongside an exploration of social and political issues of the 1970s and 1980s. #theatreineducation #theatrearchives #theatrecentre #theatrefoundry #keyperspectivestheatre #politicaltheatre #theatrehistory #theatredesign #publichistory #historystudent #studentplacement #theatreresearch #setdesign #costumedesign #archives #billsattic

Wishing many break a legs to @thepaperbirds and the #FeelMe company for their opening night at the New Wolsey Theatre (@newwolsey), Ipswich! We're delighted to have partnered with The Paper Birds during the making of their new show, Feel Me. Our Future Makers process has been key to this collaborative partnership, as part of the artist development underpinning the creation of the show. Using our experience of nurturing young artists, we have supported the multi-disciplinary team through a combination of 1 to 1 sessions and collaborative mentorship, and through supporting the artists as a peer group and in professional conversation with each other. Feel Me previews at the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich, from Thursday 22 – Saturday 24 June before touring throughout the UK and internationally from autumn 2023! 📣 📣 📣 EXCITING NEWS! 📣 📣 📣 We are so incredibly excited to announce our first commission from our 2023 Resident Writers! Wish You Weren’t Here - a comedy by @katieredford (TAPPED, Theatre503; YELLOW LIPS, BBC Radio 4). Katie is one of three Resident Writers developing shows in conversation with hundreds of young people in schools and local communities around the country through our Future Makers process. A comedy about beaches, bonding and body image, the play follows Mila and her mum Lorna as they head off on holiday to spend some quality time together. From hilarious moments of karaoke and lost suitcases to tearful conversations and uncomfortable truths, Wish You Weren't Here explores intimate mother-daughter relationships, single parenthood, single childhood, and finding your way in the world as women. Wish You Weren’t Here will open in spring 2024 as a co-production with @sheffieldtheatres, and will form part of our 70th birthday celebrations! We will have plenty more to say about all this soon. In the meantime, Katie is going to continue to develop the script in conversation with young people over the next 6 months, starting with a bunch of projects for Future Makers Season 11, which launches in June!
