Imperial Fist Captain in Gravis armour. A test of two things: true metallic metal (on the sword) and shading the recesses with Volupus Pink before applying Imperial Fist contrast paint. After saying it looked like all the Golden Demon divas were using NMM, people pointed out some used TMM. That seemed an approachable technique, so I decided to try learning it. This is my first attempt. I think I can learn it and do it better. As for the pink recess shade ... I don't like it. It looks brown! And ugly. This miniature is impossible to paint when fully assembled. You can't get to all sorts of places. I've only had the Mines of Moria/Tomb of Balin set for 21 years? So I might as well paint it. The goblins are still produced by GW and they're bad. Mold lines run through hair, details blend together around the sides, and there's little detail overall. 13/13 The complete Servitor crane cab project. And here they are all parts dry fitted and complete. They can still be fully disassembled to replace the motors and then glued together on the parent cranes and terrain they will be a part of. After the long pause I had to take on the project due to ill health, it was definitely nice to see them fully complete and ready to send off to their owner my buddy Mitch who was an absolute champion waiting for me drag my backside out of the hole I was in. They are already in the mail at time of posting. I'm really looking forward to seeing the terrain Mitch creates that will include these cabs. And it was all in all a really fun and challenging project/collaboration to partake in, hiatus aside. 10/13 Servitor-pilot painting complete. The pilots were painted with an unhealthy pale skin palor. With some purple and red shading for a bruised/ill look. Normally I think many would avoid using the Streaking Grime on flesh. But I wanted these little fellas to look dirty and oily like they've sat forgotten in the underhive for a couple of centuries. 8/13 Hull painting complete. The hulls were weathered with various AK interactive enamels. And a good dose of modelsmates/dirty down rust and verdigris effects. Some powders and pencil carbon. Honestly I just let it be a bit organic, throw wet media on, let it drip/pool where it wants to go and expand from there. 7/13 Colour concepts and base painting. Once the cabs were built and primed I took a trace off my monitor and sketched some colour ideas to discuss with Mitch. We decided on a simple industrial warm yellow and cool grey scheme with a bit of red to break it up in spots. Once we decided on a scheme it was a simple matter of blocking in the base colours, applying washes and some minor highlighting and stippling/drybrushing here and there. I was keeping it simple because I knew I'd be getting into some heavy weathering and grime. The first stage of which was a coat of the ubiquitous Streaking Grime and reduction. 6/13 Primed, pre-shaded and pre-textured. I love the priming stage. When a conversion or scratch-build just comes together as a cohesive whole. Using Stynilrez black, grey and white primers I started off more like a zenithal prime. But I went back and forth with the 3 to set more solid areas for block colours more like a pre-shade. Pre-textured before priming using textured pastes and crackle paint to aid the grungy painting and weathering to come later. 5/13 Super-detailing complete. This part of the project was where I got to add all the cables, hanging wires, nuts, bolts and rivets. And any other bit of mad little detail that took my whim and fancy. For instance, every single piece of what can be considered a "working part" has a seal attached like a maintenance label/tag left by whatever engineer last tested it. And the servo-skull back-up co-pilots :D I couldn't find images of the texturing step. I pre-textured after this with a couple of different pastes and crackle paint before priming to aid the painting and weathering later. 4/13 Main part construction complete. At this point in the project the main components were all built. The cockpit was all in, the socket for the pilots to be glued in later. The servitor pilots themselves. All the main exterior details and final front plates that would close the build at the end. From this point on it's just more layers of detailing over what is already there. 3/13 Planning the main exterior detailing. These toy cranes have working motor winches and Mitch wanted to be able to replace them once the cabs were returned. So I had to plan the build as kits essentially, with details that could be added to disguise the screw holes on one side of the hull and matching details on the other side. 2/13 Initial internal structure and pilot build. Oddly I'd say this was the most difficult part of the build, after this it was just various layers of detailing. Creating the internal structures of the cab to properly fit and disguise the voids of the base toy and figuring out exactly how the pilot would be integrated. 1/13 Servitor Cab Proposal: A while back my buddy Mitch @terrainosaur approached me about creating some servitor piloted crane cabs as part of his planned Project:Colossus. Of course I was on board and he sent me the cabs from a pair of toy cranes and I took measurements and drew some quick sketches and notes, we bandied ideas and I dived into finding and creating lots of parts. (It's been on the down-low mainly because of my health stalling my end for a while, but having completed and sent the cabs on their merry way I have edited a bunch of highlights of my part in the project to post here.
