Today I opened @rebeccasolnit's "Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities" to this excerpt. It felt so relevant to this time we are living in, and to the progression from Wheel of Fortune to The Chariot to The Star — to surrender to change and uncertainty, to hold fear by the hand and forge new paths, to stand in our values as the tower falls around us, to keep pouring love into this world despite the pain and grief. Here's the full passage: "Hope locates itself in the premises that we don’t know what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act. When you recognize uncertainty, you recognize that you may be able to influence the outcomes – you alone or you in concert with a few dozen or several million others. Today I share with you my TEN OF WANDS. Walking the Camino de Santiago is one of the top things on my bucket list. (As well as visiting the Garden of Ninfa) Travelling 500 miles across Spain on foot for over 30 days sounds pretty impossible for such an unprepared hiker like me, but there is always a call somewhere in my heart. My friend Valerie walked the Camino, more than once. She wrote a book about her journey. As every one who had done the walk would tell you, she said that’s something everyone should have done at least once in the lifetime. It’s not about being religious. Research showed many of the “pilgrims” didn’t even hold the Christianity beliefs. It’s about being yourself. People says the pilgrimage changes you forever. You can always see some new sceneries on the way. You would make new encounters at different stops. You share sweat and tears, shelters and food with strangers on the same road. Doesn’t it sound like a deck creation journey? I am grateful for every step I took on this path. I still feel surreal that I had actually finished painting all of them. I am not quite used to not having to count how many cards left. Now I am getting ready for the sampling. Thank you for your patience. But trust me, I want to see the real deck as much as you do. Here are some samples from my Tarot deck, that started off as a series of hand-drawn images, created with colour pencils and pen-and-ink outlines. In 2020 they got a face-lift using Photoshop, giving them a cleaner look and brighter colours. These cards, are in the smallest size, the Poker size, and they have a double border, where the next size sling doesn't. The Jumbo size cards do, however. The original design is hand drawn using pen-and-ink outlines and colour pencil. Our stance on AI 〰️ We spent a long time researching how other literary magazines and publications handle writing and artwork generated in collaboration with AI. (Full transparency: there aren't a lot of publications proactively addressing this topic! It's murky and morally ambiguous. Many pubs just flat out refuse to accept anything that has touched an AI model, which is very fair!) Our editors @hnnhlvy and @the.word.witch had a thoughtful discussion before developing our stance. We believe there is no replacement for human creativity and imagination. Generative artificial intelligence models that produce derivative work may infringe on artists’ copyright and could constitute theft. However, given The Star’s relationship to Aquarius and the energy of innovation, we are curious to hear from artists and writers who are endeavoring to collaborate with AI tools in *ethical ways*. After all, part of The Star’s ethos on world-building includes the use of new technologies in non-exploitative capacities! So... we are open to considering pitches that incorporate AI in a minor way and will approve proposals on a case-by-case basis. Please read the full submission guidelines on therebis.com before reaching out. We are asking folks who are using AI to submit: (1) a personal statement with the rationale for collaborating with AI (2) a detailed explanation of your creative process (3) the tools being used This statement would be published for full transparency alongside the piece, should it be accepted. Note: We do not accept work generated exclusively or predominantly from AI! Our consideration extends to things like coding your own AI model that is trained on your artwork or writing, or perhaps creating blackout poetry based on AI content... it'll really depend on your proposal and our evaluation of whether or not we believe it feels right for our publication. The Hermit There was a time when I kept on getting this card! The Hermit might be enforced isolation, of which many people will have memories, or something chosen. Isolation can have a way of allowing for a reconnection to that still small voice within, if rumination on unpleasant memories can be avoided. That inner voice means that there is less of a need to rely on external authorities such as the Hierophant or guru to point the way (unless specific advice is sought, eg medical or legal). My Dear Henry: Behind the Scenes I LOVE a BtS, and doing art for historical romance usually means a lot of research, so I thought to take y'all through some of my process for these recent pieces :3 Also, I'm trying out some new content ideas aside from the art itself, so get in the comments and let me know what sparks your interest!
