Nature’s Mathematical Marvel Romanseco Romanseco is a part of Brassica family. Neither broccoli nor cauliflower, Romanseco is something in between. Shishito Shishito is a type of Japanese chilli (or pepper) from the Capsicum family. The name Shishito is a Japanese abbreviation for the combination of “Shishi” (lion’s head) and “to” (or Tōgarashi, chillies), as the tips of these chillies look like lion’s head. While it is native to Japan, it is believed to have been developed from the Spanish Padrón chillies. Like all chillies, they were introduced to East Asia by the Portuguese explorer from the 16th century. The mix of growing Padrón chillies in Japanese soil along with the breeding and selecting the mildest chillies overtime, likely converted the taste and heat of the Shishito into what we have today. Shishitos are a slender, glossy, smooth and green chillies with some wrinkles & creases. The flesh is thin, crisp, pale green with grassy, citrusy and slightly sweet taste. They are not that spicy at all, averaging around 100 - 1,000 SHU on the Scoville scale. Good quality Shishito is now available. Feijoa Feijoa or pineapple guava plant was discovered by a German explorer in 1819 in Southern Highlands of Brazil. It is a native of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay & Uruguay. Today’s feijoa plant probably originated from a single collection of plants that were taken back to France with the early explorers, and from there the plant material was spread around the world. Three cultivars from Australia were originally introduced to New Zealand in about 1908. However they remained unknown until much later. Feijoa fruit has sweet, floral & slightly tart but refreshing taste with pear, pineapple & a hint of strawberry scent, extremely aromatic as it ripens. It is high in fibre, rich in vitamin C and a good source of folic acid. Feijoa fruits are delicious eaten fresh or can also be added to various desserts and salads, made into jam, jelly, conserves, or simply added to sauces.
