I’m an expert superyacht nanny with oodles of experience onboard (both in childcare roles and as a stewardess). I take gentle, caring approaches to child care and follow through with systems implemented by family and full-time nannies to ensure calm and continuity for the children in my care. I am adaptable and am very much a team player I am happy to lead, but also to follow. Slide safety! A lot of larger yachts have slides (from one of the higher decks into the sea). These are really great fun but obviously come with some serious safety considerations. The biggest of these being adults sliding down with children between their legs. This is a recipe for broken bones if their little legs get caught under yours whilst going down. I've found the best option is to go down first, then be nearby in the water to greet the child as they slide down. If you both really want to slide down together, put them on your lap, so they have no contact with the slide! I hope this is helpful - any questions, please pop them below. I've been asked about age limits on roles and wanted to share here tol: There is no age limit on these roles but you have to be able to keep up with the demands of the role and the long hours involved! You do not have to include your age on your CV etc. By the time they see your passport if they ask for it for booking tickets, you will already have the booking confirmation and signed contract. Body neutrality We all know yachting is a tricky industry and that a lot of things are still image based. Heck - I've done stew trials for them to turn around at the end of the day to say, 'You're great but you're eyes aren't blue so we unfortunately can't offer you the position'. I've never done an unpaid trial after that!! And if that's how they work. It's absolutely not OK and absolutely not who I want to work for!! But back to body neutrality, I for sure don't and I know a lot of others, especially women in the industry don't love how they look. I really don't want my insecurities to be passed onto my charges. Our bodies are brilliant and do a great job of getting us about to have fun, enjoy life and hang out with our friends. So we should celebrate them for what they can do. I think @alexlight_london is a great resource on this and I like her book. So, here's to keep on strutting my stuff in my swimsuit and playing ministry of silly jumps off the swim platform. Do you wear the crew uniform? This depends from yacht to yacht – sometimes yacht uniform is worn all the time, sometimes only whilst onboard and personal professional clothes for trips ashore. Some families prefer the nanny to not wear uniform at all, instead wear personal clothes. If you are unsure what to wear – ask the PA, chief stew or whoever you are most in contact with but I’d recommend you pack linen shirts and shorts (of appropriate length), quick to put on sandals and a modest swimming costume. A quick post on how I started this business! I have been a superyacht nanny for the last 7 years (previously was a yacht stew). It fitted well with my uni commitments and my absolute love of working with children. I kept doing it, kept getting repeat clients, kept getting recommended to roles. As more people knew what I did (as I didn't shout about it), I was getting asked for advice a LOT. I had a friends cousins class mate asking to meet me at the pub and so I could tell them how to get into it. They weren't even buying me a thank you drink! A day in the life of a superyacht nanny! I have recently been asked to share what a typical day looks like for me in a freelance yacht nanny role, so here we go! Get up before the children - often exact times are not known so I make sure I am up, ready, breakfasted and caffinated and ready for them. (I personally also like to eat this in the crew mess or solo to just try and catch a moment or two not in a guest facing situation) Children’s breakfast - normally buffet style fruits, pastries, smoothies etc and then order nutella crepes or similar Get dressed, do teeth and apply suncream Play - arts and crafts, lego, imaginative play, board games or just relax a bit Morning snack attack - normally this is kind of a breakfast round 2 as adults are still waking up (especially if it is after a big night). Let breakfast settle enough and then get in the water! If bigger kids, mornings are great for water skiing as it is normally calmer conditions, or if they are smaller, we might go for a swim (in the sea or pool onboard) Lunch - adults often head to beach clubs for lunch and then I do little people lunch onboard, normally I eat with them as otherwise I run out of time to nip down to eat and its important to keep energy levels up! Something calm after lunch - this is often a good time for making and doing inside, the sun is scorching hot, adults are having a siesta and some little ones are napping (so we need to be quiet). It can also be a good time for homework / reading / iPads. Water sports - crew have set up treasure hunt, water olympics or another family fun activity. Dinner - parents have canapés as children eat. I also normally eat with the children here (but don’t mind if I don’t). Hiring a specialised superyacht nanny - this has become so much more popular over the last few years. There are so many benefits: ☀️having someone who knows the destinations (where is the best family friendly beach club?) ☀️ experienced onboard working alongside crew strong ☀️water safety experience confident swimmer, jet skier (with license) and with water sports ☀️well rested full time nanny ☀️bucket loads of energy to handle the intensities of childcare onboard (no unsupervised children is quite the undertaking!) ☀️ and much more The main response I hear as to why nannies/agencies/service providers think this is not a good idea is that the nanny doesn’t know the children so well and the family doesn’t want someone new coming into the situation. I have never found this to be a problem, as they will still need ad-hoc temp nannies from time to time, irrespective of any charters. The other thing is, I am consistently booked year after year with the same families, as they get to know me and we build a lovely relationship and rapport together as we get on so well. A bit of a throwback! First pic is from my first job in yachting - I was a sole stew on a 22m and it was tough! Straight in at the deep end and I learnt a lot!! Then two very very random old pics (back when planking was a thing- who remembers?) Since I was 11 I have been sailing and just live being on the water. I'm not much of a racing dinghy sailor, instead much more of a picnic and a giggle kind of girl. Need to dig out the old pics of Tazzy my Topper! I think it makes such a difference having a nanny who can actually sail, understands the wind and conditions and can even teach your little ones to tie a bowline behind their back (my party trick!) Also - reminds me of how I nearly didn't survive my RYA dinghy level 4 and almost visited Davey Jones locker... but that's a story for another day! #superyachtnanny

My next nanny PSA... Please don't touch every single surface! The crew will cry if you keep doing this! If you can avoid touching surfaces, especially shiny ones, I firmly recommend you don't touch them. This all goes totally out the window when it is a safety concern. Safety is always first!! Just to illustrate how clean everything is... stews imagine the whole room has been spray panted red and between each charter, so they have to clean all the red paint. As a nanny, do you plan activities or just go with the flow of what the interior crew have prepared? My top tip for today is always good to be prepared, I always try to envision a few steps ahead of the plan, so that I am not left in a situation – for example, if you think the family will stop at the beach for a dip after their planned ice cream excursion, play it safe and take swim wear and towels. The interior crew do often plan special evenings and other events throughout the trip, so speak with them and work as a team to create the most memorable experiences for all guests. There aren't any photos of the children I care for on yachts on my Instagram. Why? Although lots of great nannies do use photos of the children they care for, I don't ever share images of my NKs (nanny kids). My clients are UHNW families and their privacy should be respected at all times. I'm sure if you are putting up pics of kids, you do have the parents approval (otherwise you definitely shouldn't be!!). But for me, and I know a lot of other professional nannies feel the same, it just doesn't feel right. Before I ever take a snap of a NK, I always first check in with the parents if they are OK with me doing this. These pics are sent to the parents so they can be kept in the loop of what their children are doing. They also often love to have lots of happy pics of their little people! A top tip to end things with: after a trip, consider making a photo album to send the clients with all the lovely photos you have. It is a really lovely way for them to remember the trip! Which luggage is the best for travel and yacht nannies? When selecting new luggage as a nanny, I feel there are 2 main elements which need considering: 1. The luggage needs to look professional, smart and functional well. We don't want thr bags to be falling apart, loosing wheels or looking like a "scruff-bucket." 🤣 2. Very often, there is not much space available for luggage storage. It is always appreciated when the nanny doesn't arrive with huge suitcases which are hard to store.😎 SO, for me, the perfect suitcases are soft shell, hard-wearing bags which are not black (easier to identify).🥳 I have Eastpak bags and personally couldn't rate them highly enough. Glitter is the worst. If you ever bring children's activities with glitter onboard, I guarantee you will not be the flavour of the month amongst the interior crew. Glitter is horrible to clean up, it goes everywhere and is found in funny places for such a long time. Quite simply, don't bring glitter activities or arts and crafts onboard. I'm sure the children will survive without it as it's not on their mind as an option. Adding to this, it is absolutely horrible for the environment. The microplastics sadly can easily end up in water systems and the sea and into marine life. SO instead of troublesome glitter, here was a fun little activity I did recently with my charges. These cool dudes are made with tin foil and googly eyes - it was fun making the whole band. Hello!! There is a few new faces here so I thought I would reintroduce myself 🌞 I'm Ella - originally from New Zealand but grew up in the UK and have been a superyacht nanny for years. Before the yacht nanny work, I worked as a stewardess on yachts (made it up to being a 2nd stew) but realised I just love the childcare elements the best and so decided to pursue this is lovely niche world.
