Part of my Autism experience is Persistent Drive for Autonomy (PDA). This is a nervous system difference that means I experience intense anxiety in response to real or perceived threats to my autonomy. Of course most people value having control and don’t like being told what to do. So how is PDA different? It is disabling. • From the time I learned about "jobs" until I became self-employed, I had panic attacks and suicidal ideation every day. I was terrified that I would never wake up happy because having my time controlled by others is agony. I've suddenly rage quit multiple jobs in my life. • Unsolicited advice, especially when it is wrong, does not go over well with me. It caused a lot of conflict with loved ones before I understood what was happening. • Stubborn, defiant, and aggressive are just a few of the endearing words used to describe me. Unfortunately feeling threatened doesn't bring out the best in anyone. WTF does this have to do with dogs? Having PDA has also made me incredibly competent working with "stubborn" dogs. • I have deep appreciation that "stubborn" is really resource guarding control. • I have first- hand experience that using punishment on us "stubborn" individuals will result in explosive aggression. • I know that "stubborn" people & dogs are assets if you collaborate instead of trying to control them. Additionally, recognizing that we need to ask our clients when and how they'd like us to check-in with them. While frequent reminders can benefit one person, they could be someone else's undoing.

If I had a penny for everytime I’ve heard ‘he’s so stubborn…’ Stubborn is an example of an anthropomorphism - the act of attributing human characteristics to animals. For a dog to truly be stubborn, they would need to be shown a highly beneficial option and make a choice not to do it solely because they hold an opinion otherwise. A good example is Foo, a 4 month old rescue puppy who had never been on a walk, let alone a leash or collar. During their walks, Foo would freeze and stop walking, regardless of their pleas, tugging on the leash or luring with treats. Foo was labeled stubborn. In reality, Foo was incredibly overwhelmed, unsure and scared. His new family had not built a strong enough reinforcement history with the antecedents to a walk and he simply could not move forward in such a big uncertain world. This resulted in being carried home each day. Foo did not decide to be ‘stubborn’. Had 2 sessions with a dog trainer this week and we went for a little walk training session. Benelli settled in pretty decently after one short tantrum. However, sassy pants Tikka was having a temper tantrum for 2 full laps by barking like a mad woman! . This knucklehead 😍 as a pup he was QUITE the somethin’, super hard to train, stubborn, crazy, intelligent and soooo food driven. We tried everything from professional trainers, collars, crates to melatonin just so we could all get some sleep at night and he’d stop destroying literally everything in his reach. Turns out it was just “time” that was required along with a firm voice, tight grip on his lead and never backing down from his sassing back. He’s 8 years and almost 4 months now, 160lbs of zero common sense and absolutely no recall (he doesn’t get to go off leash unless we have 5 hours to kill while we wait for him to be bothered to wander back).
