A couple weeks ago, I was having a conversation regarding the differences between large dogs and small dogs and, inevitably, the stereotypical "ankle biter" came up. I have some thoughts as to why smaller dogs might come across as being defensive more often than larger dogs and I wanted to share that perspective here as well. First off, let's take a moment to think about the way that smaller dogs are treated, as opposed to larger ones: 🔵 Smaller dogs are "more portable." They are picked up and carried around everywhere, no matter if they were sleeping, eating or just didn't want to be picked up at all. 🔵 Smaller dogs aren't life threatening; their mouths are smaller, they can be easily pushed away or kept away with an object. 🔵 Smaller dogs are often allowed to get away with things that a larger dog doesn't. We dress them up, we baby them, we don't typically socialize them as well as we do bigger dogs. We strip them of their autonomy and then expect them to be grateful for it. In my mind, it makes perfect sense why a smaller dog might be more defensive of their personal space than a larger dog might be. Its not that they're less tolerant, its that they rarely get to make any decisions for themselves (more so than a larger dog) and eventually reach a point of "enough is enough." It always makes me smile when someone tells me "my dog is not food motivated" because its just not true. They may be not be the trash eating labrador but seriously they would not survive if they didn't eat. EVERY animal is motivated by food for exactly the same reason - to live! Yes some dogs do not over eat like others, some are more picky, some are picky because we give them lots of opportunity to be picky, other we want to be food motivated right after breakfast when they are already full or to work for a piece of chicken when we also give it to them for free at other other times. Be strategic about how you use food in your training and avoid throwing at around willy nilly. Especially if you have a more selective dog. You can even train a dog to like food more! Sure, we talk about how it rebuilds and strengthens the human-dog bond, but it's not just because we're giving dogs treats. While that's a portion of what makes dogs happy, thats not the full picture. Effective R+ coaching guides the client through a total shift in perspective. So many people come into our program feeling sad, hopeless, and with a list of things to "fix". Sometimes laundry lists! Because R+ operates on rewarding the dog when they're performing desirable behaviors, caregivers begin to notice them more. Caregivers learn to stop dwelling on what isn't going perfectly, and to start celebrating the small stuff. The small stuff, with practice, builds into big-picture change. One of the first things I want to know when working with dogs, and especially behavior cases, is what kinds of interactions does that dog have in their day-to-day life with the caregivers? Does the dog have an effective way to use their behavior? Can the dog use their behavior to effectively access reinforcement, including food, play, social contact, physical touch, movement, access to the outside, etc.? Can the dog use their behavior to effectively avoid aversives, including avoiding touch, increasing distance, positioning their body in ways that feel more comfortable, etc.? Having control over our environment isn’t a perk. It’s a basic need and the more it’s chipped away at, the more negatively it impacts overall welfare. Control over outcomes is a primary reinforcer. Giving dogs the opportunity to use multitudes of behaviors AND responding to those behaviors expands their ability to have more control over their environment. Talking about muzzles... Growing up, I almost never saw a dog wearing a muzzle, and if we did then we crossed the road because 'that dog was nasty!' The stigma associated with muzzling dogs has reduced a bit but not gone away and owners can feel embarrassed and stressed about having to have their dogs wear one in public. One of my younger dogs is muzzled each time he has some sort of vet/chiro/physio manipulation despite being very social when he arrives. Why? Jam is a collie, genetically predisposed to nipping - collies will nip in self defence at sheep if they are squaring up to the dogs trying to move them in herding to stop themselves being hurt by the sheep. He is also a bit anxious and due to a long standing health issue every time he thinks something is going to hurt or is unsure then his instinct is to nip to stop it happening. By conditioning him to be comfortable wearing a muzzle, he is more relaxed about what is happening to him - he really doesn't want to hurt anyone! Dogs are muzzled for a variety of reasons: 🎗 Dangerous Dogs legislation - most recently the XL bully changes. 🎗 Dogs that are nervous/reactive/fearful and may bite. 🎗 Dogs that are prone to eating anything on walks. While training a good leave and recall is important, sometimes things happen that can have disastrous consequences! 🎗 Dogs that are wary about being handled, especially at vets or grooming establishments. 🎗 Dogs with very high prey drive - sight hounds are the classic example. 🎗 Dogs that are overly mouthy when excited 🎗 On some ferry services, dogs are required to be muzzled. Teaching a dog to wear a muzzle, even if it's rarely or never used is a really useful skill.
