May 11: Feast of Sts. Philip and James, Apostles. Sts. Philip and James were two of the twelve apostles. Philip came from Bethsaida, Galilee, and was originally a disciple of John the Baptist before being called by Jesus to follow him. James, also known as James the Less or James the Just, was also known as the first bishop of Jerusalem. Not much is known about the specific activities of Philip and James within the but tradition holds that Philip preached in Phrygia, in modern-day Turkey, and was eventually martyred in Hierapolis. James, on the other hand, was a prominent leader of the early Church in Jerusalem and wrote one of the books of the New Testament, the Epistle of James. He was also known for his strict adherence to Jewish law and tradition. In Rome, the Church of the Twelve Apostles has the relics of these two saints under its main altar. For this reason they are celebrated together. Both Philip and James are remembered for their faithful witness to Christ and their contribution to the growth of the early Church. #catholic #Catholics #tradcatholic #tradcatholics #tradcatholicman #catolico #latinmass #gospel #jesus #gesu #gesù #cattolico #loveofgod #stjamestheless #jesusdiedforyou #gospel #rosary #romancatholic #tlm #stsphilipandjames #TraditionalLatinMass #vivacristorey #adelaidecatholic #romancatholic #praytherosary #hailmary #avemaria #proudcatholic #mothermary #jesusitrustinyou #stphilip

There God has pitched a tent for the sun to rest and rise renewed. Nothing on earth escapes its heat. Ps.19 #lauds The sun is such a perfect metaphor for the Son of God. Like the bright shining sun, Jesus is our Light. His penetrating rays of love shine on all of us. Today we celebrate two of the Apostles, Philip and James who joined their brother Apostles in proclaiming Jesus. While James focused on those in Jerusalem, Philip took his message to Greek-speaking Gentiles. In a sense, these two represent the universality of this fledgling Christianity that has now spread to most every corner of the earth in 2,000 years. While the Apostles and disciples gave us this fabulous start, it is up to us to continue this evangelization. This is not just the purview of clergy and religious, but for all of us in whatever state of life we are. It is the example and joyful, encouraging words of our lay brothers and sisters who can impact so many lives hungry for the loving Truth. Thank you for your witness! #stsphilipandjames #stphilip #stjames #benedictinesistersofvirginia #stbenedictmonastery #bristowva #apostle #witness #martyr #proclaimjesus

Feast Day of Sts Philip and James, Apostles. They served Christ faithfully during the very early days of the Church. Philip came from the same town as Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly. He was the one who brought his friend Nathanael to Jesus, insisting to Nathanael that he had found the person about whom Moses had written. Some years later it was Philip who made arrangements, with the help of Andrew, to have a group of Greek Gentiles brought to Jesus. According to tradition he preached in Greece and was crucified upside down at Hierapolis under Emperor Domitian. James was the son of Alphaeus and seems to have been born in Caesarea. He is mentioned less frequently in the New Testament than Philip is. Sometimes James is called the Less, which might be a hint that he was a short person or else that he was younger than the other apostle named James. Tradition identifies James as the author of the epistle associated with his name. According to tradition, he was the first Bishop of Jerusalem, and was at the Council of Jerusalem about the year 50. He met his death as a martyr in Jerusalem about the year A.D. 62. As we remember the apostles Philip and James, we are reminded that God calls us all and sends us out into the world to be his hands and his feet. We thank you Jesus for the tasks you have entrusted to us. Help us each day to become more aware of our calling to serve you. #saints #stsphilipandjames #catholic #apostles #jesuits #aorprovince

Saints Philip and James Spanish fresco on canvas ca. 1125! Both were apostles of Jesus and share a feast day. James is “James the Less,” brother of Jude, and Bishop of Jerusalem… not to be confused with “James the Great,” brother of John who traveled to Spain and was the first martyr— commemorated in the Camino Santiago. Maybe he was “less” because he was younger or shorter. Who knows? I’m also not sure what is going on with Philip’s arm. Religious art can be wild! #jamestheless #stsphilipandjames #spanishfresco #twelfthcentury @toledomuseum

The Feast of St. Philip and St. James On May 3rd, the Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Philip and James to honor two early disciples of Jesus, who were among the original Twelve Apostles. Prayer O God, who gladden us each year with the feast day of the Apostles Philip and James, grant us, through their prayers, a share in the Passion and Resurrection of Your Only Begotten Son, so that we may merit to behold You for eternity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. "It is believed that the reason Saints Philip and James share a feast day is because their relics were brought to Rome together in early May of 560 A.D. They were placed in a Basilica dedicated to them, located near the center of Rome. This Basilica has since been rededicated to the Twelve Holy Apostles." - EWTN For more about the lives of these saints, visit EWTN with this link: https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/seasons-and-feast-days/sts-philip-and-james-23727 Photo credit Wikimedia Commons: Saints Philip and James the Less (NGI.115) by Paolo Veronese #DioSCG #stsphilipandjames

Sts. Philip and James, pray for us! May 3 *** On May 3, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Philip and James, Apostles of the Lord. If we check the listing of the Twelve Apostles in the Gospels, we’ll see that Philip is always listed on the fifth position among the Twelve, while James, also called the Lesser is ninth (Mt. 10:2-4; Mk. 3:16-19; Lk. 6:14-16). #dominusestwebministry #dominusestph #stphilip #stjames #stsphilipandjames #saintoftheday #may3

Today is the feast of Sts Philip and James, apostles. Did you know that Philip is the patron saint of bakers because of his involvement in the feeding of the five thousand? And that James the Less is the patron saint of pharmacists because he was beaten to death with a club, and clubs resemble a pestle, a standard tool of pharmacists? More than this, however, they were apostles—called by Christ into his personal company, to learn from him, to follow him and to preach the Good News of his saving love to the world. Let’s pray for their intercession, that we may also live in the company of Jesus, learning from him, following him and sharing him with the world. 📷 Pompeo Batoni, ‘Saint Philip’ (detail) and ‘Saint James’ (detail), 1740–1743. #feastday #stsphilipandjames #saints

𝐌𝐀𝐘 𝟑 | 𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐓𝐒. 𝐏𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐏 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐉𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐑 ✠ A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 14:6-14 Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.” The Gospel of the Lord. #catholic #comeandseewithsemdavid #stsphilipandjames

St. Joseph the Worker Today (May 1) on the current calendar is St. Joseph the worker, and there is some slight controversy or confusion around the day. Historically, St. Joseph was confusing for the church itself and we really don’t see any mention of him until the 8th century. It wasn’t until Gregory XV in 1621 who made March 19 “St. Joseph, Spouse of Our Lord and BVM, as March 19 is said to be St. Joseph’s death. The slight issue with this day, is that it is always during Lent meaning the celebrations (liturgically and socially), were quite limited. So the church kept this feast day, but it was Pius IX in 1870 who made St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church, which was placed on the Third Sunday of Easter, but eventually moved by Pius X to the Wednesday after the Third Sunday of Easter since Wednsadays are for St. Joseph (this was fitting). This feast day had an octave and would’ve been commemorated the week after (the celebrations would continue for a full week). In 1955 Pius XII saw that this feast day should be moved to May 1 which is Communism’s Workers Day (May Day). This may not have been a necessary change but the issue is that May 1 for us Catholics is Sts. Philip and James (Apostles). In other words we changed an important feast day to compete with non-Catholics. So the feast day was changed, and the original “Solemnity of St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church” was taken out. So was this a good change? It is a bit subjective, but it was a good idea and ultimately it doesn’t do much harm, although for some people (traditionalists) it can be controversial. #stjoseph #catholic #may1st #mayday #stsphilipandjames

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Phillip and St. James, Apostles and Martyrs. Both men followed Christ in His life and following His death received the gift of the Holy Spirit so that they could go and spread the Gospel to all the world. Both men, along with the rest of the apostles, underwent the pains of martyrdom for the faith with Phillip being crucified and James being thrown of the temple in Jerusalem. In Baptism and Confirmation we have received the fullness of the Holy Spirit just as the apostles at Pentecost. Jesus help us to be strengthened by this gift to spread the Good News of our salvation to all of the world. #stsphilipandjames #apostles #martyrs #fullyalive #fullyalivecatholic

I like to think Saint Philip and Saint James (the lesser) are apostles of us ordinary folk. They aren’t St. Peter (the first Pope), or St. John (the beloved), or St. Jude (saint of the impossible), or St. James (the greater, and first to be martyred), or St. Andrew (the first-called), or St. Matthew (infamous tax-collector and evangelist)… and yet…they were part of “the Twelve”. Sometimes you don’t need to be high-profile or standing in the limelight to be a saint and apostle and friend of Jesus. And for the greater majority of us, that’s quite a consolation. O God, who gladden us each year with the feast day of the Apostles Philip and James, grant us, through their prayers, a share in the Passion and Resurrection of your Only Begotten Son, so that we may merit to behold you for eternity. 6:14-16). https://www.dominusest.ph/post/sts-philip-and-james-men-of-faith-and-action #dominusestwebministry #dominusestph #stsphilipandjames #saintoftheday #may3

May 3 | Feast of Saints Philip and James, Apostles James, Son of Alphaeus: We know nothing of this man except his name, and, of course, the fact that Jesus chose him to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel, his Church. He is not the James of Acts, son of Clopas, “brother” of Jesus and later bishop of Jerusalem and the traditional author of the Letter of James. James, son of Alphaeus, is also known as James the Lesser to avoid confusing him with James the son of Zebedee, also an apostle and known as James the Greater. Philip: Philip came from the same town as Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought out Nathanael and told him of the “one about whom Moses wrote” (Jn 1:45). Like the other apostles, Philip took a long time coming to realize who Jesus was. On one occasion, when Jesus saw the great multitude following him and wanted to give them food, he asked Philip where they should buy bread for the people to eat. Saint John comments, “[Jesus] said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do” (Jn 6:6). Philip answered, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit]” (Jn 6:7).

Today we celebrate the Feast of Sts. Philip and James, the former of whom is the patron of our province! They both bore witness to Jesus’ miracles and Resurrection firsthand. Philip also learned from his doubting moment during the Feeding of the 5,000 that by being shown the Father “that would be enough.” Both men would later die for their faith. We pray to display their dedication to always serve the Lord and that we accept God’s will. Sts. Philip and James, pray for us! . #StsPhilipandJames #StPhiliptheApostle #StJamestheLess #salesiansue #salesianfamily #salesianos #salesian #donbosco #stjohnbosco #catholic

God speaks to the world; the Word speeds forth. Ps. 147 #lauds #stsphilipandjames Routinely, our Portress will receive a call for Sister Charlotte. That triggers the response, “Do you want Sister Charlotte Lange or Sister Charlotte Lee?” It would seem the Apostles had the same confusion with their Jameses to the point of naming one “Greater” (son of Zebedee) and one “Lesser” (son of Alphaeus). Today we honor James the Lesser, even though being chosen as an Apostle is pretty great! We also honor Philip, who like Andrew, brought people to Jesus, from Nathanael to the Greeks. It was also Philip who needed clarification from Jesus, both in feeding the 5,000 and in understanding that seeing Jesus IS seeing the Father. (And we are grateful for his questions as they answer our own!) Why are we celebrating these two Apostles together? Tradition says their relics came together to Rome, and thus they are forever linked. I look around at my Sisters, and I chuckle at how God crafted our community much like the Apostles: different ages, races, hometowns, cultures, education, experience, and areas of expertise...lots of variations! Like the Apostles, we might not have sought out each other on our own, but God knew the gifts He gave us would complement the whole and work for the good of carrying the Gospel to others in various ways. What gifts do you share with your communities? #benedictinesistersofvirginia #stbenedictmonastery #bristowva #happyfeast #stphilip #stjames

Today is the Feast of Ss Philip and James.   Philip was born at Bethsaida and started as a disciple of John the Baptist. After the Baptist’s death he followed Christ. James the son of Alphaeus is called “James the Less”, to distinguish him from James the son of Zebedee. James “the brother of the Lord” ruled the Church at Jerusalem; wrote an epistle; led an austere life; and converted many Jews to the Faith. He was crowned with martyrdom in the year 62. Jerome held these two Jameses to be the same person, and this was certainly the prevailing opinion when the feast of Philip and James was instituted in 560. Nowadays scholars prefer to divide them, in which case we might think of today as being the feast of Philip and James and James. #WolverhamptonSocietyParishes #Wolverhampton #Wolves #Church #ChurchOfEngland #TheSociety #LichfieldDiocese #GoodNews #JesusChrist #StsPhilipAndJames #StPhilip #StJames #PrayForUs

Happy Easter to you all! Join our LOV Verbum Dei family and say with us all: Christ is risen, Alleluia. He is truly risen, Alleluia. The Lord is risen from the grave, Alleluia. Who hung upon the Cross for us, Alleluia. Easter 2021 (Year B) - Easter - Week 5_Monday: “Jesus said to Thomas: ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you know me, you know my Father too. From this moment you know him and have seen him.’ Philip said, ‘Lord, let us see the Father and then we shall be satisfied’. ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip,’ said Jesus to him ‘and you still do not know me? ‘To have seen me is to have seen the Father, so how can you say, “Let us see the Father”? Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Philip! Saint Philip was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He was the one with whom Jesus consulted prior to multiplying the loaves and fish. Saint Philip was also rebuked by Jesus for his response to Jesus’ claim of being “the way, the truth, and the life.” Saint Philip was martyred and his feast day is celebrated today, May 3rd. Saint Philip, pray for us! #saintoftheday #feast #may3rd #may3 #saint #saints #philip #stphilip #saintphilip #martyr #apostle #martyrs #apostles #philipandjames #stsphilipandjames #saintsphilipandjames #prayforus

Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint James! Saint James is often referred to as “Saint James the Less” since there were two apostles named James. His mother was a good friend or relative of the Blessed Mother, which allows James to also be called the “brother of the Lord” in many Biblical translations and traditions. Saint James became the first bishop of Jerusalem and was martyred in 62. It is believed that prior to his death, Saint James the Less wrote the book of James found in the New Testament. SAINTS PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES, pray for us | May 3rd Apostles: 1st Century Saint Philip: + Philip was born in the town of Bethsaida in Galilee. + According to the Gospel of John, Philip was called by Jesus the day after he called Peter and Andrew and he responded immediately, believing Jesus to be the Messiah. + Philip is also the one who approached Nathaniel with the news that he had found “the one of whom Moses and the prophets spoke” (John 12:20-22). + Following the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, Jesus said to Philip, “He who sees me sees the Father” (John 14:8-11). + According to legend, Philip preached the Gospel in Greece after Pentecost and is said to have been crucified in Hierapolis. Saint James “the Less”: + James was the son of Alphaeus and is called the “brother of the Lord” (Mark 15:40). + After the Ascension of Jesus, James served as the head of the Church in Jerusalem and supported Saint Peter’s decision regarding Gentile converts and the observance of Jewish laws. + Ancient tradition relates that James was martyred in Jerusalem around the year 62. + The New Testament Letter of James is attributed to James the Less. Spiritual Bonus The Saint James whom we celebrate today is known as “the Less” to avoid confusion with the other Apostle named James—called “James the Great”—because of his close relationship with Jesus. The Feast of Saint James “the Great” is celebrated on July 25. #StsPhilipandJames #Apostle #OFM #FranciscanPH #LesserBrothers #FriarsMinor #FranciscanCommunications

Filipa in sv. Jakoba ob križu in je iz 19. stoletja. Stranska oltarja, opremljena s slikama sv. Uršule in sv. Vida, sta iz leta 1876. Orgle so iz leta 1909 in so delo Naraksa iz Žalca.
