Sulej hips. That’s what the women in my family called it. The physical trait I inherited. Child bearing hips. A daily reminder what my body was designed to do. My narrow shoulders not intended for carrying a pack up a mountain and the q angle of my hips not intended to be skiing down it. Yet there’s nothing here that limits me from doing these things, they do however expose my inefficiencies and challenges that come with learning and training athleticism like this in a 30 something year old woman’s body. This season I pushed ice hard & dialed it back on ski touring. The opposite of last season when I had a broken thumb before the ice melted & had no choice but to keep the sticks beneath me. This season I felt the need to go back to rudimentary basics. Hiring an instructor to dissect my technique physically and mentally. It surfaced harsh waves of resentment. Constant reminders of how disconnected I feel to skiing. When I was 13 my mother offered to take me to the rural ski hill in Ohio where we just moved to. My only concern at that age was to fit in, to be invisible, free of ridicule for being the new girl in a new middle school. No one in my family skied, no friends skied. Why would I go then? I didn’t want to be cold, uncomfortable, or to miss sitting at home watching tv decompressing before another day of school. So here I am focusing on the black lines of the past. The road blocks that led me to where I am today. The anger and bitterness for my teenage self, my environment, and the body I was born with. Does it serve me to focus on things I can’t change? Hell no. I forget that it’s all still in my hands. The lines that I have not written are in my control. This morning didn’t go as planned 😆 Life doesn’t always go the way we want so we have to make it up as we go 💁🏼♀️ Went on a hike this morning. It was a little colder than I wanted but I gave it a shot. I was probably 1/2-1mile from the top & decided to turn around. Hiking high peaks in the winter are no joke (it’s colder at the top) 🤪 I should have worn an extra bottle layer but thought the fleece leggings & bibs would be fine but they weren’t. Certain parts of my body get cold sooner than others & don’t always warm up… next time I’ll wear a merino base layer under my fleece leggings! Meet TREW To You Team ‘The Schwack Pack’! The east coast isn’t known for blower powder, huge mountains, or impressive snowfall totals, yet team Schwack Pack makes the most of what they have there. Calvin, Ryan, and Jackson are students at the University of Vermont and are coming off the release of their film project ‘Loose Operation’, chronicling a season of searching for East coast glory. Andreya is a born and bred Jay Peak local, and between being in grad school at Cornell he gets after it arguably harder than anyone in the region. Meet TREW To You Team ‘Ruff Life’! Kristie, Rose, and Kat aren’t just ski patrollers; they’re also dog handlers in the Mount Hood Meadows Avalanche Dog Program. Together as Team ‘Ruff Life’, they live their dream of working on the snow alongside their closest four-legged friends. Kristie, a skilled mountain guide from Oregon City, is partnered with Lily, a certified seven-year-old black lab known for her boundless energy. Rose, originally from the Wasatch Range in Utah, found her passion in patrolling after being drawn to the epic rivers of the PNW. Her border collie, Osa, is in intense training for certification. Kat, hailing from Naches, WA, juggles graduate school and full-time patrolling with Tele, a spirited seven-month-old golden retriever. JT, a videographer from North Bend, WA, brings tech expertise to the team, having bonded with Rose over river adventures. Together, they invite you to join their world, skiing with these enthusiastic pups and learning the art of search.
