Skills Kill _____________________________________________ Weightlifting in itself is a very specific skill. The clean and jerk, the snatch- to be honest, these movements have little to no carryover in your day-to-day function. They are however, a lot of fun. If you think about it, most extremes on the spectrum of gym-related activities serve little purpose outside of the gym on a daily basis. When do you ever need to deadlift twice your bodyweight or climb a rope? The reality is, if we just trained for day-to-day life, we wouldn't need much more than learning how to sit in and out of a chair safely, the ability to put our arms over our heads, maybe carry our chaotic children around the mall and then be able to get up off the ground in case of a slip and fall. Basic tenants of daily activity. BUT.. that would be a boring life, no? Why waste the potential of what your body could do by only achieving the bare minimum? Learning fun skills in the gym can help keep your interest and give you the satisfaction of training for a goal as opposed to just going to the gym to sweat. Learning new skills also introduces the ability for your brain to adopt new movement patterns and makes training FUN. If you're not having fun while keeping the doctor away, what the hell are ya doing? ______________________________________________ Liv learning the ins and outs of the split jerk :) a movement used to drive a weight from the rack to overhead position by splitting the feet and pulling the body under the bar.
