Think simplistic wooden boats with long benches facing each other. It’s a 1.5-hour journey, packed tighter than a can of sardines. But hey, the stunning views of the river make it all worthwhile! 🌊✨ Majuli isn’t just an island; it’s the heart of Assamese civilization since the 16th century. This place oozes culture and spirituality, earning its title as Assam’s cultural and spiritual center. The ancient Hindu monasteries, known as “Satras,” are the keepers of Assam’s traditional art, music, dance, and theatre. Imagine stepping back in time to a world where traditions are alive and thriving. We stayed at Dekasang, right by the riverbank, and let me tell you, it was love at first sight. The aesthetic is on point – wooden rooms, spacious interiors, and a vibe that screams relaxation. The food? Chef’s kiss! 👌 The staff were so hospitable, they might as well adopt us. 🌄🚗 Just wrapped up the most epic road trip from the rolling hills of Kohima to the ‘Knowledge City’ of Jorhat in Assam, and boy, do we have some tales to tell! 😄 First off, if you haven’t driven these roads, do yourself a favor and add it to your bucket list ASAP! The scenic beauty is off the charts. At one point, we stumbled upon a road that looked like it was carved straight out of a mountain – picture-perfect and giving us serious Gehalur Ghati vibes from Bihar. Naturally, we had to stop and channel our inner Instagram influencers, snapping shots from every angle 📸. Midway, our thirst levels hit DEFCON 1, so we pulled over at a super market and found the holy grail of coconut water drinks. This wasn’t just any coconut water, folks. It had actual chunks of coconut floating in it – game changer! 🥥✨ After a day of winding roads and playlist battles (spoiler: my playlist won), we rolled into Jorhat and checked into the fabulous Assam Villa by Storyweavers Retreat. This place is the epitome of cozy comfort with its lush garden and ample parking for all our road trip goodies. First order of business? BEER. 🍺 The caretakers greeted us like long-lost friends and whipped up some mouthwatering snacks that vanished faster than you can say “road trip munchies.” The property is spacious with a cozy dining room and plenty of spots to kick back and relax. We even made friends with a delightful couple and their daughter who shared some killer tips about exploring the North East, especially Shillong. Major travel inspo right there! Hats off to the super polite and accommodating staff who made our stay feel like home away from home. 🏞️ Dzükou Valley Trek: Part 2 - The Descent and Delight! 🏞️ After conquering the challenging climb to Dzükou Valley, we found ourselves enveloped in nature’s embrace, capturing stunning photographs of the lush green valleys & majestic mountains. Our descent began with the guidance of a friendly local, but it quickly turned bittersweet as we encountered numerous burnt trees, stark reminders of the wildfires that have ravaged this beautiful land. It’s a poignant call to action for us all to cherish and protect our natural world. The descent took us along a flat, mud-laden path lined with prickly hedges that seemed determined to leave their mark on us. Along the way, we crossed paths with a group of IIT students from Guwahati. Their directions were a godsend, as the route lacked any proper signage. Further along, we met another delightful group—seasoned trekkers who gather once a year for such adventures. They had camped overnight & generously shared their experiences, along with some much-needed tea and biscuits. It was heartwarming to see how the trail fostered such instant bonds. Together, we laughed, joked & supported each other, especially during the tricky parts of the descent where slipping was a real hazard. Time seemed to fly in the company of new friends & before we knew it, we had reached the base. Dzükou Valley remains a hidden gem in Northeast India, often overlooked by the masses. Its serene beauty and fewer crowds make it an ideal spot for those seeking adventure off the beaten path. The trek, with its steep climbs and forest trails, is challenging but ultimately rewarding. The views are worth every ounce of effort. For anyone planning to venture here, remember to pack for all weather conditions—cold, rain, and sun. Carry plenty of water and snacks, and make sure your trekking shoes and stick are up to the task. And most importantly, go at your own pace and savor every moment of this incredible journey. Whether you choose to camp overnight or return the same day, as we did, the journey to Dzükou Valley promises an unforgettable experience. Our trek began with a choice between two paths, each offering a different level of challenge. Unwittingly, we picked the shorter but more difficult route. Armed with trekking sticks and bathed in the soft glow of the morning sun, our excitement was palpable. But nature had more in store—soon, a gentle drizzle had us donning our ponchos and treading with caution. The path varied from easy stretches to demanding climbs that left us breathless, yet every step was invigorated by the fresh, rejuvenating mountain air. For almost two hours, we ascended, each stride bringing us closer to the summit. Somewhere along the way, amidst the challenge and beauty, we discovered the essence of why we climb. The adventure, the struggle, and the breathtaking surroundings combined into a profound realization: the journey itself is the reward. As we reached the peak, the heavens seemed to open up before us. The view was nothing short of spectacular—a sea of green valleys and majestic mountains stretching across Manipur and Nagaland. Even a brief drizzle couldn’t dampen our spirits. Picture this: walls adorned with stunning animal and bird art, a treasure trove of Angami Naga handicrafts, musical instruments, and ancient utensils like massive spoons. And the pièce de résistance? Traditional arms, including a fearsome machete and swords—one with human hair that can only be lifted by someone who has taken a life. Talk about history literally weighing on your shoulders! 🗡️🐘 We even saw an elephant skin shield, a relic used in warfare to protect warriors. Imagine the stories that skin could tell! As we strolled around, vibrant flowers bloomed everywhere, trees planted by schoolchildren in pots proudly displayed their class names, a living promise to uphold Khonoma’s green legacy. 🌸🌳 Dustbins, managed by the village youth, dotted the landscape, ensuring the environment stays pristine. With hunting deeply embedded in their culture, shifting to farming was a significant lifestyle change. But the villagers rose to the challenge, now almost every household boasts an organic kitchen garden, supplying their daily needs of fresh veggies. Surrounding these homes are lush paddy fields that seem to stretch endlessly, painting a serene picture of coexistence with nature. 🌾 As you approach Khonoma, a poignant reminder of its storied past greets you—a stone of Khrisanisa Seyie, the first president of the Federal Government of Nagaland, with a powerful caption asserting Naga identity and sovereignty. A statue of Sievizo Seyie, a legendary fighter, also stands proudly. Arrested by the 3rd Assam Rifles, Sievizo refused to apologize for defending his people against atrocities, embodying the spirit of the Naga warriors who fiercely resisted British colonization. 💪🏽 To explore Khonoma, visitors must pay a nominal registration fee of Rs 50/- & hire a guide for Rs 500/-. Our guide led us through one of the historic gates that once protected the village—there used to be seven such gates! These gates are reminders of the village’s resistance, especially the 1879 battle where British officers met their match against the Naga warriors. 🛡️👊🏽 Strolling through the village, we admired the vibrant fruit trees & meticulously maintained paddy fields. We paused at the communal meeting spot, a traditional venue for resolving disputes through open discussion. Then Semona fort, where the fiercest battles were fought & where villagers once safeguarded their women & children. 🏰 One unique tradition of Khonoma is the ownership of the Khwehu—a circular area in the village. 🍜🍢 Get ready to have your taste buds tantalized by the vibrant street food scene in Kohima! Phulbari Street comes alive after 5pm, transforming into a bustling market where the air is filled with the irresistible aroma of delicious street food. This lively market, where parking is a no-go, is run mostly by local women vendors, each with their own unique story to tell. For lunch, we dived into FIFA—no, not the game, but “Food is for All!” We savored their chili pork (a fiery delight), fried rice, and chowmein noodles. But the true showstopper was their gravy momos—juicy, flavorful, and utterly mouthwatering. As the evening set in, we wandered through Phulbari Street and discovered a treasure trove of local delicacies. The dark pork sausages caught our eye, sizzling away in hot oil. Cut into small pieces and straight from the pan, they were every bit as tasty as they looked. Next up, we sampled some uniquely prepared liver and gizzard from another vendor. The flavors were unlike anything we’ve tasted before—definitely a must-try! We couldn’t resist the pork ribs from Hungry Panda either. These fatty, grilled ribs sell out quickly, and after tasting them, we understood why. Paired with fried rice and chowmein, they made for an unforgettable feast. We owe a special shoutout to Chef Sr. Murze, who was in his element, whipping up fresh chicken and fish dishes that were simply out of this world. The produce was as fresh as it gets, making each bite a culinary delight. Phulbari Street is more than just a food market; it’s an experience. 🇮🇳✨ Standing amidst the serene hills of Nagaland, the Kohima War Cemetery is a powerful testament to courage and sacrifice. It commemorates the valiant soldiers who fought in the Battle of Kohima during World War II—a battle often dubbed the “Stalingrad of the East” for its pivotal role in halting the Japanese advance into India. In early 1944, the Japanese 15th Army, under General Renya Mutaguchi, launched Operation U-Go with the objective of capturing Kohima and Imphal. This strategic move aimed to cut off British supply lines and establish a base for further incursions into India. Kohima, a small hill station, became the epicenter of this brutal conflict. The siege began on April 4, 1944, with Japanese forces surrounding the town.The defenders, an inspiring mix, held their ground against overwhelming odds. The fighting was fierce and often hand-to-hand, with heavy casualties on both sides. One of the most intense encounters took place at the tennis court of the Deputy Commissioner’s bungalow, where desperate combat saw positions change hands multiple times. By June they forced the Japanese into retreat. Today, Kohima War Cemetery stands on Garrison Hill, overlooking the town, as the final resting place for over 1420 Commonwealth soldiers. It includes a memorial to the 2nd British Division. Its rows of white headstones, set against Nagaland’s lush green landscape, offer a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made here. A notable feature of the cemetery is the epitaph that reads: “When You Go Home, Tell Them of Us and Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.” These words, attributed to John Maxwell Edmonds, encapsulate the profound bravery and selflessness of those who fought in this historic battle. 🌟✨ Our Journey to Impur: The Jerusalem of Nagaland! ✨🌟 Just 15 km from Mokokchung lies Impur, a serene mission center established by American missionaries in 1896. This place isn’t just a town; it’s a living history book and a spiritual haven. Known as the Jerusalem of Nagaland, Impur is the headquarters of the Ao Baptist Church Association since 1897, sheltering around 159 churches under its fold. 🏛️ The heart of Impur is its magnificent Baptist Church, one of the oldest active churches in Nagaland. Walking into this historic sanctuary, with its original structure still intact except for a few repairs, was like stepping back in time. The church accommodates around 300 devoted souls who gather to pray and worship, and outside, the baptism tank—still in use today—stands as a testament to enduring faith. 🌿 As we strolled through this peaceful haven, we were blessed to meet the youth pastor and some theology students. Invited for a cozy tea session at the pastor’s house, we delved into deep conversations about the realities of urban and rural life, the sacrifices parents make and the intricate balance between tradition and modernity. It was a profound and enlightening experience that left us with much to ponder. 🏡 Our adventure didn’t stop there! We explored an old bamboo house and learned the traditional method of pounding rice. It was a hands-on history lesson that made us appreciate the ingenuity and resilience of the past. ⛪ But wait, there’s more! We climbed the towers of Jina and Etiben, the Ao people’s very own Romeo and Juliet. Their love story, steeped in pain and sadness, is a poignant reminder of the timeless nature of true love and sacrifice. Standing atop those towers, we felt the echoes of their undying love and the weight of their tragic tale. Our visit to Impur was more than just a trip; it was a journey through time, faith, and love. We left with hearts full and spirits lifted, grateful for the warmth and wisdom of the people we met.
