-Trip Report- Day 2 - Mount Oxford, what a wake up. We woke before sun up to get fed and watered before the runners arrived. The moment I left the tent I knew it was going to an amazing sunrise, we were above the inversion layer there was not a cloud in the sky above us views for miles. The sun crested the peaks on the horizon, as the first runners for the Mt Oxford Odyssey reached the summit it made for some beautiful photographs that’s for sure. Some very happy runners. After carrying the flag to the summit for Fenixlight I got that set up in a lull between runners, the team from Mountain Adventure loved the pictures that made the effort worth it. We were sat at the summit for the day with the Oxford Land Search & Rescue New Zealand, flying the flag for Land Search & Rescue New Zealand. The clouds that started below us hung around all day every now and then encasing us in a white out. After the last racer had past and race control had signed off, we packed up camp, leaving some of the Land Search and Rescue team to head down the other route collecting radio equipment. The rest of us headed out the way we came in down the summit route. After 500 competitors had come up this route and some rain the track was a little more slick than on the way in. Slick track plus heavy pack meant that I made the most of my LEKI Sherpa poles were put to use keeping me balanced and on my feet, saving my knees and ankles along the way. As we got further down the track the weather cleared and the temperature increased. On this trip I wore my La Sportiva Akasha 2 trail runners and while they were super comfortable they weren’t the warmest being a little damp, I for sure should have worn my Trango TRK GTX boots, they are much better at keeping the water out and the warmth in. Lesson learnt, and as we head into the more winter month I will be leaving the trail runners behind a lot more. Movie #12 of the year is Next Goal Wins! This was a cute and sort of sweet riff on quirky underdog sports films like Cool Runnings and Eddie the Eagle, dusted with a light touch of director Taika Waititi’s trademark humor. It’s a fairly uneven movie as only about half the jokes and emotional scenes actually land, even though the supporting cast (especially Oscar Knight and Kaimana) is clearly working overtime to make things work. Fassbender does a weird job as the lead, playing both the comedic and human story beats with an intensity that doesn’t match the film’s general tone at all, frequently leading to some of the movie’s big scenes come off a little uncomfortably. Even the lesser entries in Waititi’s filmography are worthy of at least a viewing though, so it’s hard to complain too much about the final product even if you can’t help but feeling that it had the potential to be something much greater. Movie #11 of the year is Poor Things! This is something special, an idiosyncratic and hilarious gothic comedy featuring some of the most charismatic movie stars working today throwing themselves into outrageous yet fragilely human performances. Emma Stone’s work here is so uninhibited and lacking in any sense of self-consciousness in every aspect: the cadence of her delivery, her body movements, her facial expressions, everything. Her performance is one that could have fallen flat on its face if it wasn’t played so fearlessly precise. Ruffalo gets a chance to chew scenery as a smarmy libertine creep, and you can feel him reveling in getting to play such a loathsome and sad character. They both walk a thin tightrope that Director Yorgos Lanthimos’ direction helps keep firmly steady in what is easily his best work yet. The set design is fancifully intricate and lovely, while the overall tone of the film is like some ungodly collaboration between Terry Gilliam and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. All of that (not to mention a wonderfully weird turn by Willem Dafoe in heavy practical makeup as a mad scientist) and Jerrod Carmichael too? One of the best films of 2023, without question. Poor Things is streaming on both Hulu and shockingly Disney+ of all places now!
