A 13-year-old girl in Hong Kong has been arrested after she allegedly stabbed a classmate with a 30cm-long (12 inch) knife at a school in Tuen Mun. Top bosses at Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways were paid about 20 per cent more last year than they received in 2019 before the pandemic, with some enjoying substantial salary rises despite the flag carrier’s ongoing struggle to restore its full capacity. According to its latest annual report, the company paid about HK$60.62 million (US$7.8 million) to its 20 executive directors last year, up 21.6 per cent compared with HK$49.84 million in 2022 when Hong Kong was still gripped by the Covid-19 pandemic. Passengers flying out of Hong Kong will have to pay an extra HK$10 (US$1.3) each in airport security fees next year, with the amount set to keep rising in the next few years. The Airport Authority said on Tuesday that the passenger security charge at Hong Kong International Airport would increase from HK$55 to HK$65 starting in January 2025, an 18 per cent rise. A hiker died on Sunday after he plunged off a cliff at Hong Kong’s Lion Rock. Police said they were alerted to the incident about noon and were told the man, a tourist, was unconscious. The man was airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, but was later pronounced dead. The victim, 37, from mainland China and identified only by the surname Liang, was said to be part of a group of about a dozen friends who started out on a hike on the city landmark in Kowloon at about 10am. A man in China has been jailed for using thousands of phones to fake viewers and traffic on live streams and making $415,000 (approximately Rs 3.4 crore) in less than four months. According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), the man surnamed Wang, was sentenced to one year and three months in prison and fined $7,000 for the “crime of illegal business operations”. He reportedly operated 4,600 phones to inflate live-stream viewer counts and managed to earn over $400,00 in less than four months. The outlet reported that Mr Wang began operating the business in late 2022 when a friend told him about a “lucrative” practice known as “brushing”. Hong Kong families’ overall well-being levels have continued to fall, with the gap narrowing between rich and poor households, a survey has found. The survey findings, released by NGO the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society on Wednesday, also showed that households with carers looking after family members scored lower than those without. The society called for more support to improve the well-being of families, especially those with elderly carers. A 66-year-old container truck driver died on Wednesday on a Hong Kong flyover after he crashed his vehicle into a barrier and fell off the elevated road. In a video posted online that captured the crash, the truck is seen slamming into the barrier on the left of the Kowloon-bound Tsuen Wan Road flyover. It then veers right and mounts the central divider before toppling onto its left side. Hong Kong’s rail operator is planning to suspend services on certain sections of the Kwun Tong and Tsuen Wan lines for up to two days in a row for the first time in its 45-year history to upgrade ageing equipment. The MTR Corporation and the government recently discussed with some lawmakers potential service disruptions as a result of a HK$65 billion (US$8.3 billion), five-year investment plan for maintaining its rail assets up to 2028. Jin Xing, 56, from Liaoning province in northeastern China, is a renowned transgender performer with 14 million followers on Weibo. In February 2004, Jin met German national Heinz Gerd Oidtmann on a flight from Paris to Shanghai. In 2005, the pair got married and Oidtmann moved to China alone to be with Jin. However, the couple divorced in 2006 and Jin explained that they did so to resolve the children’s household registration issues and avoid impacting their elder son’s studies. The ministry of culture, sports and tourism said the state-run Korea Creative Content Agency would examine a petition that alleged Hybe was blackmailed into paying a third-party vendor and his accomplices who were aware of its unethical business tactics in 2017. The ministry said the agency would get to the bottom of the case and seek answers from the music label.
