After being indoors for 4 days with 4 more to go, these rocks are the gateways to visualizing my much-needed weekend hike (who am I? 😆😆) It’s been a long tradition for artists and literati to collect and use these majestic rocks as muse for their creative works, meditation, and spiritual escape. I see endless ideas for adventure in nature- free climbing/ cliff diving/ bird watching/ stargazing. 🤩🧗🏻‍♀️🌄✨🌟🌠🌌 How do these rocks inspire you? #scholarsrock #reimagined #chineseart #scholarsobjects #abstract #abstractart #art #GerhardRichter #ancient #comtemporary #rockingabstraction #suiseiki #suseok #供石 #賞石

🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼 //Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month// Title: Transforming Anxiety into A Scholar’s Rock #9, #7, #8, #4, #5 Year: 2021- present Medium: sculpture and photography | silicone, silicone pigment, resin, metal print (dye-sublimation printing on aluminum) This series of sculptures reflects my recent observations and several incidents related to the COVID-19 pandemic, police brutality, and attacks on Asian Americans in the US. By employing body imagery as a receiver and reflector, I explore the possibilities of using our physical bodies as vehicles for reconstructing the trauma and social violence to which we have directly or indirectly been exposed. Using my intertwined hands, I have created skin-toned or jade-colored silicone sculptures of abstract shapes that reify the human body deformed by outer forces. To allow contemplation of our current world, the sculptures are displayed on rock stands to be observed as we would a scholar’s rocks. The reference and cultural symbolism of scholar’s rocks, the jade colors, and the skin tones lighter than other Asian origins reflect my East Asian ethical and cultural background, my diaspora of immigrating to another country, and the criticism of situations that regard Asian Americans as perpetual foreigners in the US. Through these sculptures, created as a part of a micro-landscape, I examine and reveal a personal history of being an East Asian that has been deeply remolded and twisted by racism in the US. #skin #usa #europe #political #violence #body #xenophobia #racism #asian # #asianamerican #race #silicone #fear #jade #fragile #resistance #jiajenlin #sculpture #scholarsrock #contemporaryart #perpetualforeigner #stopasianhatecrim #stopracism #stopdiscriminasian

Scholar’s Stone Screen. 16C. Ancient scholar’s screen is divided into one and split two types of systems, generally one type of year earlier, more popular in the Ming Dynasty. This screen size is wide, for the ”lying screen“ style, the center is set with a whole plate of green stone, texture such as mountains or clouds, very meaningful. I can still recall 2020 in the US pretty well… (Artwork image #8-10) (Btw, the rubber bullets are not rubbery soft at all, they are made of hard metal shell and just covered with a relatively thin layer of rubber as I can see from two empty samples on my hand) Series: The Archival Body / The Invisible Asians Title: What I Can Grip at This Political and Crisis Moment? Maybe Only My Other Hand Year: 2020 Medium: sculpture | resin, silicone, silicone pigment, acrylic stand Dimension: approx. 7¼ x 5⅞ x 2½ in (acrylic stand: 5 x 5 x 4 in) This is a sculpture of my hands gripped together and captured in silicone and then sealed in clear resin. I preserve the fear and feelings of violation by making life-sized sculptures. As part of The Archival Body series, this work continues to examine the fragility of human beings in the face of disease, racism, and violence and how these change our physical perceptions of our bodies. I pose an open-ended debate and elicit reflections within oneself amid the hope, chaos, and violence we have witnessed in 2020 by creating sculptures that reveal our underlying anxieties and conditions. #skin #usa #europe #political #violence #body #xenophobia #racism #asian #asianamerican #race #silicone #fear #brutality #fragile #attacks #resistance #jiajenlin #sculpture #grip #scholarsrock #contemporaryart #politics #stopasianhatecrim #stopracism #stopdiscriminasian #georgefloydprotest #policebrutality #covid

//Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month// Series: The Invisible Asians Title: The Protestor Year: 2020 Medium: photography | digital print (or dye-sublimation printing on aluminum) Dimension: variable (sculpture), 11 x 17 in each (photography) This series of photographs captures a flesh-like silicone piece symbolizing the Asian American figure and posed around a white marble pedestal. The series explores the complexity of solidarity and racism between Asian Americans and Black Americans through the background of the Black Lives Matter movement. In these silent images, this abstract figure uses its thin but persistent physical action to push, occupy, and stand with its back against a white marble pedestal, which is usually used for colonial statues. Its face is blurry and stays anonymous to reflect how Asian Americans have not been acknowledged in American history and how racism against Asian Americans has also been ignored. While transitioning my identity from an Asian immigrant to an Asian American since 2019, I have learned that I am not able to escape racism. I have thus had no choice but to join the protests and the reckoning of racism’s present and past in this country. #immigration #borders #usa #taiwan #dual #dualcitizenship #notyourmodelminority #violence #politicalinfluence #body #racism #asian #asianamerican #eastasian #nycart #race #silicone #jiajenlin #sculpture #scholarsrock #contemporaryart #politics #stopasianhatecrimes #stopracism #stopdiscriminasian #asiansolidarity #aapi #perpetualforeigners

(now I like one of my eyes) Epicanthic fold https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold Ethnogeographic distribution High-frequency populations The highest frequency of occurrence of epicanthic folds is found in specific populations or ethnicities: East Asians, Southeast Asians, Central Asians, North Asians, Polynesians, Micronesians, Indigenous peoples of the Americas, and some African peoples (especially among Khoisan and Nilotic peoples). Among South Asians, they occur at very high frequencies among the Nepalis, Bhutanese, [better source needed] Northeast Indians, Kirati people and certain Adivasi tribes of Eastern and Southern India. It is also commonly found in Northern India, especially in Kashmir. The Hazara people in Afghanistan and Pakistan commonly have this trait. Some people in Eastern/Northern Pakistan have this trait. In some of these populations the trait is almost universal, specifically in East Asians and Southeast Asians, where a majority, up to 90% in some estimations, of adults have this feature. Possible evolutionary function The epicanthic fold is often associated with greater levels of fat deposition around the eyeball. The adipose tissue is thought to provide greater insulation for the eye and sinuses from the effects of cold, especially from freezing winds, and to represent an adaptation to cold climates. It has also been postulated that the fold itself may provide a level of protection from snow blindness. Though its appearance in peoples of Southeast Asia can be linked to possible descent from cold-adapted ancestors, its occurrence in various African peoples is not open to this explanation. The epicanthic fold found in many African people has been tentatively linked to protection for the eye from the high levels of ultraviolet light found in desert and semi-desert areas. #body #racism #asian #asianamerican #eastasian #race #jiajenlin #sculpture #scholarsrock #contemporaryart #politics #stopasianhatecrimes #stopracism #stopdiscriminasian #asiansolidarity #aapi #perpetualforeigners

Series: The Invisible Asians Title: Fingerprints Year: 2020 Medium: sculpture and photography | silicon, pigment, piano finish taper wood base, metal print (dye-sublimation printing on aluminum) Dimension: approx. 6 x 6 x 4½ in, including the base (sculpture), 11 x 17 in each (photography) Fingerprints is a silicone sculpture that captures an imprint of my hand in an aim to reflect unrest in response to immigration and racism. My name, 林嘉貞, was left behind in my native country of Taiwan the moment I entered the U.S. Customs and Border Protection building. I immediately became another person once I entered U.S. territory. In the U.S., I insisted on not having an easy-to-pronounce English name; instead, I kept my translated name, Jia-Jen Lin—which, however, has often been recognized to be Chinese due to the pinyin system I chose to use 19 years ago. Having my fingerprints taken at Customs represents my knowledge that I will always have to press my fingers harder; otherwise, the immigration system will not recognize me as a legal immigrant who has become an American citizen through naturalization. #fingerprints #immigration #borders #usa #taiwan #dual #dualcitizenship #notyourmodelminority #violence #politicalinfluence #body #racism #asian #asianamerican #eastasian #nycart #race #silicone #jiajenlin #sculpture #scholarsrock #contemporaryart #politics #stopasianhatecrimes #stopracism #stopdiscriminasian #asiansolidarity #aapi #perpetualforeigners

Time spent collating, reworking thoughts and ideas via the sterility of an endlessly updating laptop leaves me staring long and hard at my little scholar’s rock.
