Happy Friday! What a busy week we have had, from exhibiting and speaking at our clients EDSB Compliance Solutions grand opening and innovation day at their new office last Friday, to this week speaking to several new clients, renewing client and some exciting new projects, it is amazing to see the ambition so many businesses have to understand more, about developing a sustainability strategy, reducing their environmental impact and how this can be both good for our environment and their business. It is also great to see many renewing clients who 2/3 years ago began their net-zero journeys, signing into short-term contracts as it was a new consideration, a new budget and one that was difficult to understand the value or ROI of unless a key client or contract was requesting the data. To now, these clients have a detailed understanding of their environmental impact, have measures in place to reduce over the short, medium, and long term, supported by a comprehensive carbon dashboard, annual report and Carbon Reduction Plan aligned to internationally recognised standards. They now understand the value of the SBS Net-Zero Program, are prepared for supply chain questionnaires and the ever increasing need to provide net-zero data for frameworks and bids. 90% of our clients are now signing into 3 year retained contract work to further develop their carbon understanding, reduction plans and business goals. If you are being asked for to provide your environmental data, don’t know where to start, understand the terminology or are putting it off for another day, talk to one of team today about our program and support our renewing clients are evidence of the value this brings to their business. #sbs #sbseco #sustainablebusinessseervices

Supporting our clients understand, track and reduce their carbon footprint, always means a focus on business energy. There are many things that can be done to reduce the associated impact, firstly by understanding your usage and utilising an energy audit, that can also reduce costs. Here's a guide to the process: 1. Commitment: Secure top-level support to ensure the audit is prioritized. 2. Planning: Identify the scope, objectives, and resources for the audit. 3. Data Collection: Gather information on current energy consumption. 4. Analysis: Evaluate energy usage and identify inefficiencies. 5. Recommendations: Develop a plan with practical, cost-effective measures. 6. Implementation: Execute the plan, focusing on quick wins first. 7. Monitoring: Track performance against the plan to measure success. 8. Review: Regularly assess and adjust the plan for continuous improvement. The benefits of conducting an energy efficiency audit are manifold, but here are a few: ✅ Cost Reduction: Lower energy consumption translates to significant cost savings. ✅ Operational Excellence: Optimizing energy use can improve overall operational efficiency. ✅ Environmental Impact: Reducing energy use lessens your carbon footprint, contributing to environmental sustainability. ✅ Market Positioning: Demonstrating a commitment to energy efficiency can enhance your brand and reputation. ✅ Legislative and client reporting – many new frameworks require energy reported as part to demonstrate and support your key clients achieve their ambition There is much support available to organisations to undertake and audit but that also provides grant funding for the implementation of measures recommended in the audit, here in the Northeast, local authority funded support linked below in the comments, alongside our team of experts; #sbs #sbseco #sustainablebusinessservices #energyaudit #fundedsupport

As we face the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation, we should remember the words of Sidney Sheldon. This is not only a moral duty, but also a smart strategy for our own well-being and business sustainability and growth. We can all do our part as individuals and businesses to reduce our impact on the planet and contribute to its restoration. Here are some simple actions we can take: ✅ Reduce our energy consumption and switch to renewable sources whenever possible. ✅ Avoid single-use plastics and recycle or compost our waste. ✅ Support local and organic farmers and eat more plant-based foods. ✅ Choose eco-friendly products and services and avoid those that harm the environment. ✅ Educate ourselves and others about the issues and solutions and advocate for change. ✅ Calculate, understand and reduce your impact through a credible carbon reduction plan These are just some examples of how we can make a difference. There are many more ways to be part of the solution. #sbs #sbseco #sustainablebusinessservices #

You have measured your environmental impact through your carbon footprint, what next? Take a step back, understand the impacts, related financial commitments your business has, industry or key stakeholder positions and targets and formulate a plan. The majority of UK Industry and Global net-zero pledges align to Science Based Target reductions. Science-based targets are ambitious goals that companies set to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. These targets are based on the latest climate science and are aligned with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to well below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The SBTi defines science-based net-zero as the achievement of three main steps: 1. Near-term science-based targets - what companies will do now, and over the next 5-10 years, to reduce emissions. ✔At least 95% of scope 1 and 2 emissions ✔At least 67% of scope 3 emissions (if scope 3 is greater than 40% of total emissions) ✔SMEs are not required to validate their scope 3 targets; however, it is recommended that all companies continue to measure, report, and reduce their scope 3 emissions 2. Long-term science-based targets - Companies are expected to make emissions reductions of at least 90-95% to reach net-zero by 2050 ✔At least 95% of scope 1 and 2 emissions ✔At least 90% of Scope 3 emissions (for companies of all sizes) 3. Company-level net-zero - Net-zero for a company means that it has successfully reduced its greenhouse gas emissions to a level required to limit global warming to 1.5°C as per the science-based targets ✔Must reach its long-term science-based targets ✔Cannot simply offset its emissions with removals ✔Reductions must be achieved to the required level The SBS Net-Zero Program is aligned to credible global frameworks, such as SBTi, ISO 14064 and B-Corp. Our partnership approach means we will work with you to collate and understand your data and use this to formulate credible, near and long-term targets aligned to your business ambition and international standards. #sbseco #sustainablebusinessservices #sbsnetzeroprogram

With Governments and many businesses environmental targets focused on net-zero emissions, this investment and focus should be used as catalyst and opportunity to focus on the many other problems and solutions required to fight climate change. Carbon tunnel vision is a term used to describe the narrow focus on carbon emission reduction as the only solution to climate change. It certainly plays a big part in understanding the environmental impact of a business, product, event or person and can enable the first steps in reducing this impact, but it can ignore the link between the wide spectrum of important environmental and social impacts such as biodiversity loss, land conversion or inequality. As a result, it risks missing out on important business opportunities and eroding long-term ability to create value. To address other important environmental factors, we need to consider a more holistic approach that takes into account all aspects of sustainability. This certainly includes removing and reducing carbon emissions, using good data and support, but also addressing other critical sustainability factors such as environmental, economic, and social. Our work this year will focus heavily on working with our clients, businesses and individuals to understand the business and environmental benefits of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) #sbs #sbseco #sustainablebusinessservices #biodiversitynetgain #carbontunnelvision

The 1.5°C target was adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Paris in 2015 – The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. It is important to note that the 1.5°C target was set at a time when climate change impacts were less visible, frequent, and extreme than today, and when little mandate for change existed in any country. A credible Carbon Reduction Plan should be aligned to Science Based targets, (1.5°C), with more public sector frameworks (PPN 06/21 & NHS) and purpose led commitments ( B-Corp) requiring a Science Based Target reduction plan, understanding the science and environmental reasons to help support and drive your ambition. For further support in developing your plan or to understand any of the key terms, speak to one of our team today. #sbseco #sustainablebusinessservices #sbsnetzeroprogram

With the vast array of automated software solutions now available to businesses, you could be forgiven for taking the short route (cut) to creating your business footprint. With so much jargon within the environmental space and the increase in detail being asked from suppliers and public sector frameworks, our advice is to take a little time to understand your impact, starting with the sources or Scope emissions as defined by the Greenhouse Gas protocol. In doing so, whether you choose to use software or work with a consultancy, you will be better informed to answer important supplier questions and or work with your sustainability partner to formulate credible net-zero strategies aligned to internationally recognized standards. Thie is much support now available, with funding in some areas to help you begin or enhance your journey. If you would like any support please contact one of the team today for an initial exploratory call. #sbs #sbseco #sustainablebusinessservices #net-zero

Public and private sector organisations are moving forward with their own net-zero targets, large premium listed businesses have been required by legislation to do so for several years. We are seeing a big shift now for these organisations to focus on and drive down the impact of their Scope 3 emissions; Scope 3 includes all indirect emissions that occur in an organisation’s value chain; activities they do not own or control. These emissions typically account for the largest proportion of an organisational footprint 70% + and is the reason it is a big focus as demonstrated this last week by Sodexo. Sodexo UK & Ireland the food services and facilities management giant has stated that it will stop working with suppliers that have not made “tangible progress” to measure and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in 2030. Read more in this article from edie .https://www.edie.net/sodexo-outlines-plans-to-cut-ties-with-suppliers-lagging-on-climate/ This approach is replicated by many more large private businesses and the NHS, working together with and forging good transparent with your value chain up and downstream will be essential for business as we look forward and develop business growth plans, carbon data and supply chain engagement has to be front and centre. #sbseco #sustainablebusinessservicces

One of the main barriers we hear around developing a net-zero strategy is finance. It’s a new additional cost that can be difficult to understand the return on investment on. The ROI could be measure in many different ways; ✅Business growth – providing the required data for a framework or customer questionnaire. ✅ Staff attraction or retention. ✅ Reduced operational costs as you get closer to your data and costs. ✅ Reduced environmental impact Working closely with several local authorities we see the difference funding can provide in giving organisations the first step, without the full added pressure of cost through a variety of funding options. Below we list a few funding streams available to support your net-zero ambition; Business Energy Saving Team (BEST) - BEST is an energy efficiency improvement project, funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund with the North of Tyne Combined Authority as the lead authority. Green New Deal Fund (GNDF) - GNDF seeks to support the low carbon sector by providing flexible and competitive finance to enable, accelerate or enhance viable low carbon projects. Low emission vehicle plug in grants - discount on the price of brand new low-emission vehicles through a grant the government gives to vehicle dealerships and manufacturers. Clean air Zone vehicle upgrade grants - The Clean Air Zone in Newcastle and Gateshead applies to older and more polluting taxis, vans, buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles. Workplace Electric Vehicle charging scheme - The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme that provides support towards the up-front costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge-points, for eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations.
