I come from a line of strong, bad ass women. Those women also lived with their traumas: one having a birthing trauma that led to her death, another worked as a nurse during WWII transfusing her blood on the beaches as the wounded soldiers rolled in, with a cigarette dangling from her mouth; and another fighting a long list of chronic illnesses. Music is such a powerful tool for visualization, when I step away from guided or silent meditations I like to listen to a playlist of chosen instrumental songs that really help me focus, like the one above. I loved the score of this movie (and I loved the visuals in the book). It really gets me in the zone. My mind goes to a beautiful space, with weeping willows, lush greenery, water and there is usually a dock (even though I'm wary of docks lol). This day, over the years, solidified my ability as an empath, and left a heavy impact. For years I dreamed of a woman with dark hair, trapped in smoke with muffled screams. As a child, this day also symbolized an awakening to a world that was beyond what I knew it as at 10 years old. A scary, unpredictable world. One that would never go back. Today I remember the bravery of all those souls who perished, and survived this very dark day. May you find peace. What is stigmatized loss? Stigmatized loss in any loss society has taught us is "controversial", a loss that we as mourners feel we need to pause and bite our tongues before we speak when asked of how they passed. Suicide, homicide, overdose, drunk-driving...all of these and more fall under the category. We feel uncomfortable grieving these losses out loud. We may feel as if we have no support. We may feel people "tiptoe" around us after. We need to share our loved ones. We need to share their stories. We need to share our grief, our hurt and our loss. We need to feel safe and loved and not judged. "Well, it was their choice" does not help our hurting hearts. 💔 My niece died by suicide. My dear friends overdosed. They are missed, they are loved and they all mattered. Please watch my page in the coming weeks as I work to develop in-person grief support meetings and coordinate with others for retreats. Life's Journeys - GRIEF I was ten years old when I first became an Aunty. I was so ready to dive in. Learning, playing, watching. And proud. My walls soon became plastered with baby pictures instead of Leo DiCaprio. I spent portions of summers reading, changing diapers, swimming and cuddling. And then, 17-years in, I went to bed with a dreadful feeling and woke up to a dreadful reality. My beautiful, intelligent niece had decided to leave. I remember being so mad from the moment I'd heard. Mad at her. Mad at people who posted on social media before family knew. Mad at the people in the grocery store. Mad at myself. Unlike other journeys through the grief cycle, anger was a recurring emotion for years. I found support through a stigmatized loss group, deep meditations, visited mediums, took SafeTalk. We recognize even in loss we experience meaningful gain. Loving friends, new communities and connections, education, and, for me, the development of my gift. Grief never goes away, but it does spark something in you if you notice. Maybe we change our lifestyles, take action, teach, comfort, or maybe it’s as subtle as tapping your shot glass before drinking. Grief is where beliefs change, rituals develop and our hearts either wall up or open. Sharing your grief with chosen ones will help release some of the heaviness. When I opened myself up to receive I was able to let go of the tightly wound sadness and forgiveness paved the way for that. Our loved ones are with us - accessible through intention, meditation, signs and synchronicities, self-talk or written word. Their biggest wish is we honour them by living our lives as the loving beings we are, not clouded by a never-ending sadness. The love I shared with my niece in this plane has not left since she departed. That loving bond still exists. Life's Journeys - TRUST Here I am in my first Vancouver sublet. Top floor of a 21-storey building in the heart of downtown. 2014, Sharing a bed and room with one of my best friends as we began to find our feet as actors (side note: she is still KILLING IT in film and theatre, I took a detour but am looking for a community theatre near me!). About a month prior to this photo we had settled on another sublet on West Broadway. It was a 1-bedroom-turn-the-living-room-into-a-bedroom situation for cheap that we were so excited to have! And the renter was from my hometown. It seemed perfectly aligned! Days before I was to retrieve the keys I messaged the renter to ask where I should meet for pick up. "Oh, you didn't see the news?" She says. I frantically Google the address and a video from Global News blasts across my screen of the whole building in flames. It was gone. I was devastated. I wrongly believed the Universe was conspiring against me to keep me on the island and from my dreams. I was drive-bawling with one of my best friends who cooly told me to STFU and that this was not how the Universe works. Another opportunity would be along, I just had to trust it. The very next day a friend called me out of the blue. As I spun my tale of woe she began to connect the dots. It just so happened her grandmas tenant was moving out for the summer and she needed a sublet for 4-months. Yes, she'd take my friend too! My friends grandma took us to fancy restaurants, gave us vintage designer clothes, and told us to get out of the house and go read at Chapters a few times 😂. And after 4-months, the Universe provided us with an amazing rental just down the street! If you've experienced any of the thoughts listed above - the why-me's, everyone's out to get you, you'll never have better than what you have... STFU and TRUST. Hand it back to Spirit when shit gets too difficult and say "Ok, show me what you got. Life's Journeys - FEAR I love this blurry little photo. I had just arrived in Perth, Australia in 2011. Sitting on the floor of a room I shared with my then-partner, a man I met 7 months prior in Austria. I had fake tanned, got my hair dyed, packed all my beach wardrobe... I worked 3 jobs for months back in Victoria, got rid of my car, my CELL PHONE... I was dedicated AF. I made the decision. There were a lot of nay-sayers (including my own father who didn't talk to me for 2 weeks) but I. WAS. GOING. I had $800 cash when I arrived. I was screwed. But I did it anyway. Two years of growth. Of dear friends I still cherish. Of wild Events - including a "Psychic Night" that changed a lot of things for me. I remember waiting in the Hong Kong airport in my pretty green dress, to fly to Perth. I arrived at midnight to 30-degree weather and into the arms of a man I'd seen only for 24-hours previous. I was terrified. But I did it anyway. No, I'm not endorsing some of the above that now I see as irresponsible and potentially dangerous, but I packed my best tool then - my intuition. And I knew it would be right. That feeling you get in your gut? Trust it. If you want something, believe it. No matter how obsurd it seems or ill-prepared you may be. It's yours if you believe it is. I love visiting old cathedrals when travelling. The architecture and details are so pleasing to me. As a family, we never openly practiced any religion. While visiting this morning, a few of our travelling companions stopped to pray. I told my nephew, you can set intention here. Spirit is everywhere. Listening. I stood in the middle of the cathedral and thanked Spirit for allowing me to visit such a beautiful place, for guiding me, for safe travels, for always being present when I need and asked for protection and guidance for all the dancers in our group and their families. I understand churches can be a place of hardship for some. I too, had struggled for a time. We have family members who have died by suicide and some who are openly gay.
