Wild leeks, aka ramps, ravish the rich hillsides of the Berkshires in early spring, ushering in the vernal season with a profusion of greenery weeks before the trees break bud. And then they disappear, bowing out as the next waves of lush herbage come into their prime. Disappearing, that is, until they flower. In the dim and humid light beneath a full canopy of towering sugar maples, thousands of tiny fireworks are now bursting forth and brightening the scene, like an afterglow, or phosphorescence, subsequent to the effusion of spring ephemerals. Solstice is past, we are in the descendant phase, but not without cause for celebration. . #floraofberkshirecounty #alliumtricoccum #wildleeks #richmesicforest

Like telephone poles with connections to the heavens, an array of trees in the Tuliptree Cathedral at Green Lakes State Park near Fayetteville. It seems that most people stick to the trails around Green Lake and Round Lake. A nice climb in the height of autumn up the Brook Trail from Round Lake leads to this stand of tuliptrees and a marvelous stillness. Round Lake is the home of a National Natural Landmark, one of 28 such sites in New York State. National Natural Landmarks are natural areas designated by the US Secretary of the Interior in recognition of significant examples of the nation’s biological and/or geological features. Round Lake is a rare meromictic lake surrounded by about 20 acres of diverse, old-growth forest. The maple-basswood rich mesic forest and the two meromictic lakes are also designated as part of the NY Natural Heritage Program. The Eastern Native Tree Society BBS reports that one tree was cored on 11/17/2001 and found to be 330 years old. On 4/24/2011, the tallest tree found was measured at 147’ (although the dense interwoven canopies make it challenging to determine an exact height), and the tree with the greatest girth measured 40” dbh. #tuliptrees #oldgrowthforest #newyorkstateparks #greenlakesstatepark #liriodendrontulipifera #telephonepoles #autumnincny #nativetreesofnorthamerica #yellowpoplar #tulippoplar #richmesicforest #nationalnaturallandmark #nynaturalheritageprogram

Unorthodox angle of my favorite spring flowers - red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) growing on a limestone rock face. Pure beauty. Zoom for detail and potential tiny pollinator! #redcolumbine #springinohio #apringephemeral #limestonecliff #richmesicforest

Strangest thing of today: Trillium erectum with not three, but FOUR leaves! What is this!?! No longer Trillium, this should be called a quadrillium. #trillium #mutation #quadrillium #richmesicforest #nature #wildflowers #springephemeral

Asplenium rhizophyllum (walking fern; walking spleenwort) is not your typical fern. Leaves are simple and not divided, growing outwards and then rooting at the tip to form a new growth, as if it’s “walking”. Mostly grows on boulders with high-pH levels. #walkingfern #walkingspleenwort #fern #richmesicforest #berkshires #botany #nature

Dirca palustris (eastern leatherwood) grows in rich mesic forests, blooms VERY early, and is extremely bendable and hard to break (thus its name, leatherwood) #leatherwood #richmesicforest #botany #nature #shrub #berkshires

Sugar maple site index 80+ 👍🏼 The hill in the background is a mere bump known as Sugarloaf, dwarfed by the Greylock massif just to the east. #richmesicforest
