My good friend, and new fishing buddy Ralph, convinced me that I needed to take a little time away from the vice filling orders and head to a local stream that he’s been wanting to share with me here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. It turned out to be a great opportunity to try out my new Ross Animas reel that the boys from reelflyrod.com hooked me up with as well as some little size 10 Rusty’s Matuka streamers custom-made for the early Spring waters around this area. The stream was beautiful and so were the Brookies, all dressed up in their Easter pastels. Trout fishing is about to heat up and the bugs should be hatching soon in number. Excited about learning the hatches occurring right in my new backyard. Please reach out if we can help you to enjoy your flyfishing adventures and thank you for your continued support. #MorrettFlyFishing #CustomTroutFlies #WinstonFlyRods #RossReels #renzettivises #NorthCarolinaFlyfishing #ReelFlyRod #patagoniawaders

Working on a new custom fly order that came through our website, MorrettFlyFishing.com, from an avid flyfisherman from the great State of Washington. He reached out to us to see if we could tie him up some variations of an old classic Pacific Northwest Mayfly pattern called the Saint Joe special. Based on what I could find out in regards to the origin of this fly was that it was designed quite a few years back to be used on the rough waters that are encountered in that part of the country. Heavy hackle, bushy tail, and large upright wings in order to stay afloat, and visible from the trout’s perspective. Rob wanted to try out some variations from the original orange color that we could find so we went with gray and purple. Purple was the color we decided on in a variety of sizes to give the local residents something different to look at. He also requested some parachute ants, but I’m not really fond of parachute ants, so I suggested the fur ant that we tie with a smidge of polar bear fur for the wing providing maximum flotation and visibility with rough water to be encountered. We decided on those as well in a variety of sizes. Still working on this order and I am looking forward to this Summer and a great report in regard to the effectiveness of both patterns. I love trying new patterns, especially when they have a history like the Saint Joe special. #CustomTroutFlies #KonaHooks #whitingfarms #HarelineDubbing #RenzettiVices #reelflyrod #PacificNorthwestFlyfishing

Just wanted to share a view from the new office in North Carolina of MorrettFlyFishing.com. Also, I’ve been commissioned by an avid fly fisherman from the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. The attached drawing represents an idea that Chet has had concerning cutting down on short strikes that he has experienced in the Lake June area. I’m really enjoying trying out some different patterns and materials while experimenting on some samples based on his request in regards to color, size, and hook position. For us, this is what custom fly tying is all about. I must admit, I’ve never worked from a drawing before, but it has been a great learning experience, and one I hope turns into a real winner in regards to a fly pattern for the high mountain Lakes in California. Please check out a few versions of the Lake June Zonker. We would love to help you out if you have any special request in regard to your own Custom Trout Flies. I will try to follow up with the final version that we come down on. Have a great Holiday season and Peace from all of us here in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. #CustomTroutFlies #CreativeFuse #sippinthedry #ReelFlyRod #californiatroutfishing

Mad River Report If you find yourself in the Stream early in the morning or late in the day, avoiding the warm water temperatures in the middle of the afternoon, I suggest you have a fly selection that includes a few of the six pictured here. Just putting the finishing touches on an order for a gentleman from Pennsylvania needing a seldom seen Trout fly pattern, the Jassid Beetle. It just so happens, my client and I share the same admiration for Vincent Marinaro and all that he has contributed to the flyfishing world. These will be used on the same waters that Vince used as the laboratory back in the 40’s and 50’s creating this pattern. I hope these perform as well today as Vince’s original pattern did for him back then. On a sidenote, these perform well late in the day in the heat of the Summer when the trout are making those little dimple rises and eating no-seeums like popcorn. #JassidBeetleFlyPattern #VincentMarinaro #RenzettiVices #SpringCreekFlyfishing #Reelflyrod

We had a wonderful time hosting Craig and Angela Schneizer for their version of the Parents date night. Slowing your pace down and chasing a few Brown, Rainbow, and Tiger trout for the day can certainly recharge your engine. We had a great day with beautiful fish, beautiful weather, and a couple that are a great example of enjoying each other’s company and truly embracing the opportunity to just be together. I think we could all probably learn a little lesson from that. Thanks for the day, Craig and Angela, it was truly a pleasure. Mad River Report One word for this week’s Mad River report is busy, busy with bugs. The current brown trout’s menu consists of Caddis of all sizes, three different types of Mayflys, swarms of Midges and a few Terrestrials. Success has been found from the middle of the afternoon into the evening hours, with plenty of rising trout available to the angler. The challenge presents itself when trying to figure out what item on the menu the trout is choosing at this time. My most recent outing involved about two hours of unsuccessful choices made on my part. Finally, we broke the code and found immediate success with very small size 18 and 20 olive patterns presented with a very delicate dead drift at the end of long light leaders. Thank God for spring creeks and cold clean water. The river flow is good with plenty of holding water to be found with a little searching. A little heads up here, don’t underestimate the size of trout under that little dimple rise. We approach each rising Trout as if there’s a monster underneath that ring. This seems to keep the excitement level high and the mind at full alert. There are some monsters in there and you never know when you might find one. #CustomTroutFlies #MadRiverTroutFishing #RenzettiVices #Reelflyrod #Winstonflyrods.

Mad River Report Buck and I love to cast a dry fly to a rising trout. We usually can figure out what the fish is eating and present a fly pattern representing their current food source in a pretty natural manner. Our hit ratio, with humility, is pretty good. That being said, the conditions of the Mad River right now are proving to be challenging for a couple of old Trout Bums. Low clear water calls for careful wading and long light leaders for sure. The insect report is that we have seen Caddis in all sizes, tiny Blue Winged Olives, dainty Sulfurs, and the ever present clustering Midges. This is all good for the feeding fish however, it makes it very difficult to pick out a fly that will work more than once. This is where the challenge comes in. Be prepared to offer up a few different patterns during the course of the late afternoon and early evening hours in your pursuit of the feeding Brown Trout. I personally had the most success with small Sulfur patterns while Buck fooled them with a larger Caddis imitation. If you happen to venture up to the Mad and find the magic fly that will consistently perform this time of the season, please let us know, we won’t tell anyone. #CustomTroutFlies #MadRiverTroutFishing #winstonflyrods #ReelFlyRod.

Mad River Report This week a couple of observations and a few suggestions in regards to dry fly fishing the Mad River. Sean Esterline, “Big Country”, from Reelflyrod.com, and I took a beautiful walk along the bank of the Mad, just walking and chatting about flowers and bugs and such. Somewhere towards the middle of the afternoon, we discovered the Hendrickson Mayfly Hatch is pretty much over, as far as we could see. The airways above the stream have been taken over by Caddis. That worked out just fine. We were able to fool a few Brownies throughout the afternoon by using one of a couple adult caddis patterns we happened to have in our box. The Caddis were the number one item on the trout’s menu, but at the end of the day there were a few Sulfurs in the air. We will probably be seeing Sulfur mayflies for the immediate future. There’s always something going on at the stream, you just have to get out and look. #CustomTroutFlies #MadRiverFlyfishing #RenzettiVices #ReelFlyRod #SippinTheDry.

Mad River Report Spent a great afternoon on the Mad with good friend Thomas Nugent, Owner and Artistan of Tallpinerodco.com. We tried out some of my Hendrickson patterns, as well as checking out one of his beautiful new creations. The current flow was very wadeable and the air temperature was near about 70 degrees, which was the first really good day as far as dry fly fishing is concerned in about a week. We decided to try to fool some Brown Trout with the different stages of the life cycle of the Henny represented by a few Morrettflyfishing.com patterns. We started by downstream swinging soft hackle emerger patterns, followed by Klinkhammer Emergers, leading into a few different Dun patterns as the Hatch unfolded. Late in the day we employed Rusty Spinners with an egg sac. Although success was found with all of our different offerings, the Spinner turned out to be the most successful pattern of the day. The lesson we took from this outing was, observe the hatch and don’t leave the water too early. You never know when a Spinner Fall may occur. On a sidenote, Thomas is a talented young craftsman that has an old soul. Please take a look at his website and you’ll see what I mean. You truly have some beautiful Fly rods there Thomas, and you know how to use them. I say we give it a try again next week, God willing and the creek doesn’t rise too much. #TallPineRodCo. #Hendricksontroutflies #Abelreels #SippinTheDry #MadRiverTroutFishing #RenzettiVices #Reelflyrod

Planning ahead for an upcoming fly fishing trip to the mountains of North Carolina, and possibly Tennessee. I’m in charge of putting together an assortment of flies that should work in the beautiful mountain streams that we hope to be fishing soon. Should work means to me that these patterns have worked in the past, seems like a good place to start packing. I’ve put together a little collection of flies that have been successful on the kind of streams we will be fishing and I thought I would share with anyone that might be heading to Southern Mountain streams with hopes of finding some Mountain Jewels of their own. You might notice there is only one bushy dry fly in the selection that I am tying for the trip. This dry attractor pattern will be used for the dry fly offering, bobber with a hook, coupled with a variety of dropper patterns. Most of the success that I’ve had personally on these cool fast flowing streams comes from a wet or underwater offering . If you know me, I certainly prefer dry fly fishing and tying as compared to sub surface fly fishing. I said I didn’t prefer tying or fly fishing with sub surface patterns, I never said I didn’t know how to do it. I have learned there is a time and place for everything as long as it’s legal. Reach out if we can help in any way and thank you for your interest. #MountainFlyfishing #ReelFlyRod #CustomTroutFlies #RenzettiVices #Winstonflyrods #MorrettFlyfishing

Mad River Report If you were to compare this weeks report to last week‘s Mad River Report the difference could be summed up in one word, more. By more, I mean more bugs, Hendricksons and Caddis, more trout looking up, more trout brought to the net, and the hope that there are more good things to come as the temperature continues to rise. It is beginning to feel buggy in the middle of the afternoon into the evening hours and the trout are beginning to get into a routine of setting up in feeding lanes and taking advantage of the Spring bounty. I was joined on the stream by my good friend, Thomas Nugent, who found me at one of my old reliable stretches that has historically produced a good supply of Hennys. Brown trout that were showing us their noses while feeding turned into a great afternoon on the Mad. We tried at least a half a dozen different patterns imitating the Hendrickson mayfly in some form or fashion. The pattern that seemed to work best for us was a Klinkhammer Emerger tied to imitate the size and color of the prevalent hatch. Even the trout that we caught that were serious about feeding on floating bugs instead of chasing them up from the bottom preferred the Emerger pattern over the Dun. It was nice to see larger bugs hatching which made it easier to see our pattern while trying to tempt our finny friends. We recommend a size 14 in your choice of patterns, but I would lean towards emerging Hendricksons until they stop working. That is our plan and we are going to stick with it until further notice. We highly recommend you look for calmer water below riffles and keep a close eye on the foam line looking for that rise. At times it seems more like hunting then fishing, that is until the quarry is spotted. The water has been crystal clear so walk softly while wading and try to make a longer and more accurate cast than usual in order not to spook the wary Brownies that you are after. They seem to know when you’re there, which makes it real tough, be sneaky. Please reach out if we can help make your dry flyfishing adventure more successful. #MadRiverTroutFishing #ReelFlyRod #AbelVayaReels #CreativeFuse #CustomTroutFlies

Mad River Report Eventful day on the Mad that included a great conversation with two officials from the EPA and what their survey plans were for the summer in regards to the fish, bugs, and the water on our beautiful little headwater stream. Buck and I both came away from our meeting feeling very encouraged about where the Mad is today and how much better it can be in the future, all good. Buck and I also were able to celebrate a year anniversary of his hip surgery and we did so by wading in some pretty good current on some slippery rocks hunting for rising brown trout. I am happy to announce Buck is officially back, and the local trout are in for some trouble. I guess on a sidenote, we were able to find a few risers, looking up and eating the few Hendricksons that were spotted. Not by any means an epic hatch but we are still seeing just a few Hendricksons every warm afternoon. I am optimistic that this is just the beginning. Hope reigns eternal. #ReelFlyRod #HendricksonHatch.

4/21/2023, 3:39:08 PM

Spent the day checking the river all the way up to the headwater Spring Creeks looking for Hendricksons hatching in the afternoon. The report is the Hendrickson hatch is on at the Mad River as well as the private stream where Mel and I ended up with our faithful Guillie Willow. The afternoon was spent harvesting a couple of Rainbows for Mel’s famous fish tacos, as well as Guillie training which included holding point on a rising trout, as well as keeping track of the Creel to make sure we weren’t over our limit. The hardest part of the afternoon turned out to be controlling the excitement of a possible Trout for the table from Little Willow. It was an extra special day due to the fact that I got to try out my new Tom Morgan Favorite Rod from the RL Winston Rod Company for the first time with my size 14 Hendrickson Crippled Dun pattern on what I would call some very nice size Rainbow trout. As expected the TMF performed exactly the way it was designed, beautifully. If you are a serious flyfisherman, or woman, you owe it to yourself to try out a Winston Rod designed for the kind of fly fishing that you plan on doing. It will enhance your fly fishing adventures on the stream for a lifetime, it has mine. #RLWinstonRodCompany #reelflyrod #MorrettFineArt #customtroutflies

Mad River Report Absolutely beautiful day on the Mad! Water temperature at about 58°, CFS little over 400, air temperature mid 70s with partly cloudy skies overhead. All this points to the fact that it felt buggy for the first time this Spring. A few Hendricksons were spotted coming off in some of the likely spots at around 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Due to the fact that the only risers spotted were very splashy, it seemed to me the trout weren’t accustomed to looking up yet, but they were chasing the emerging nymphs as they were moving around looking for the surface. That being said, the pattern that fooled the only two rising trout I spotted all day was a darker Hendrickson Klinkhammer trailing behind a Hendrickson crippled dun. Not so great news is that I only saw two rising trout after 4 1/2 hours of hunting. Great news is I think this is just the beginning of what could be a real good Hendrickson hatch on the Mad River in 2023. My hope is the Brown Trout go along with the plan and start looking up, giving us a chance to fool them in the best way possible, upstream and dry. Please feel free to reach out to us if we can help with your Trout fishing adventures. We hope to see you on the stream soon. #SpringDryFlyFishing #SouthwestOhioFlyFishing #reelflyrod.com #CreativeFuse #browntroutfishing #SippinTheDry

It is my pleasure to introduce my new friend and fellow trout fisherman Greg McCracken. Greg and I were able to enjoy what turned out to a beautiful day of introducing a smallmouth fly fisherman to the world of trout. It did not take long for Greg to figure out a few techniques that we employed for finding Brooks, Rainbows and Brown trout. It was fun to watch as Greg picked up dry fly fishing, dry droppers, and small streamer stripping in no time at all. I must admit, Greg brought plenty of talent to the table, which made it very easy to just point him in the right direction. I can say with all confidence that this guy can catch trout anywhere with a fly rod. We did have a conversation about Bonefish and agreed he needed to work on his cast in order to stretch it out to at least 60 feet and hit a pie pan before he goes after this bucket list species. I’m sure he will accomplish that goal if he sets his mind to it, he’s that kind of fisherman. Thanks for a great day. I certainly can’t assume to speak for all guides out there, but spending a day with a new trout fisherman like Greg is why I do it. #OhioFlyfishing #ReelFlyRod, #Winstonflyrods.

Mad River Report I personally think there’s a lot of pretty to be found on the Mad River in mid March. The trout are pretty, the landscapes are pretty, and apparently the resident stoneflies think our very successful stonefly pattern is pretty enough to try to get to know. This natural stonefly really, really liked the artificial, even after being so roughed up after a hard days work. Not only did our Early Black Stonefly pattern fool the bugs, it also fooled the resident brown trout. I guess when another bug tries to mate with your artificial pattern it must be a pretty believable representation, just saying. The actual river report is pretty much the same as it was about a week ago, water pretty high, CFS at 385, air temperature climbed into the low 50s, water temperature climbed up to 48 with plenty of Stoneflies to be seen and brownies rising to meet them. All this happening from around 1:30 until about 4:30 on a sunny afternoon. The last three weeks have been great in regards to Stoneflies and dry fly fishing with stonefly patterns on the Mad. However, I’m not sure how much longer this is going to last until the Mayflys start showing up in number. We will see, all good right now. Be careful wading, the current is strong and the water is cold. #StoneflyFlyPatterns #MadRiverTroutFishing #RLWinstonRodCompany #ReelFlyRod.

Here is a suggestion on one possible way for a fly fisherman to spend a cold early March Saturday in southwest Ohio. Meet up with a buddy in Urbana at the finest café available for breakfast in maybe all of Ohio. Have a big breakfast and talk about the fact that it’s colder than it was the week before, and the water is higher, the wind seems to be freshening up a bit, and it just doesn’t feel like the kind of day where we’re going to see many bugs, or many rising trout. Seems like a good morning to head up to the private Spring Creek, work on some casting techniques and maybe our landing technique as well. Shortly after lunch the air temperature seemed to be climbing up into the mid 40s so we headed to the Mad River to try and find some Stoneflies. Although there were not many bugs and certainly not many rising trout, we worked on a bunch of good things in regards to mending line, drag free drifts, reach casting, etc. I guess it turned out to be really a great day. I think Chris and I learned a lot from each other and he was able to bring his immense smallmouth fishing experience to the world of trout fishing in no time at all. Not a banner day in the way of fish caught but a lot of good memories to hold onto. I think that turned out to be a pretty good deal. #GrimesFieldAirportCafé #Winstonflyrods #ReelFlyRod #CustomTroutFlies #chrisbenner

Mad River Report As I am sitting here at my Flytying desk having a cup of coffee and listening to the rain pelt against the windows, I am thinking to myself, “I wish you guys would’ve been with me yesterday.” Everything lined up just right. The water was a little high, slightly stained at around 49°and the air temperature climbed into the low 50’s. As has happened the last couple of weeks, middle of the afternoon Black Stoneflies in about a size 16 maybe 18 visible in the air and along the banks. The trout were taking advantage of pretty easy pickings out of the riffles and that moving buffet called the foam line. I found the trout were making a slashing kind of rise, which meant I needed to pause slightly before setting the hook, slightly. I missed quite a few early on then I slowed down and had my first double digit day of dry fly fishing on the Mad River in I don’t know how long. I sure hope this is a sign of good things to come in regards to dry fly fishing on the Mad River. One note on my fly, I believe durability is important, this particular pattern took that to a whole new level. The Stonefly pattern pictured is shown before and after. What I mean by after is that I used one fly the entire day and that’s pretty rare for me. Hope to see you on the stream. #RLWinstonRodCompany #renzettivises #reelflyrod.com #MadRiverTroutFishing #rioflyline

Just finishing up the Uncle Country Upland collection for Sean at Reelflyrod.com which started with mayflies, and now has moved into a type of caddis looking pattern. The main ingredient in all of these patterns came from the same pheasant skin as the mayflies. It is incredible how many varieties of colors, shapes, sizes, and textures, in regards to feathers, are found on one skin. I’ve heard it said before God loves wondrous variety. Please enjoy the Uncle Country Upland Caddis collection fresh off the vice. Did I mention the river is flooded. #RenzettiVices #WhitingFeathers #CustomTroutFlies #MadRiverTroutFishing #Reelflyrod.
