During the two world wars, in the first half of the 20th century, women filled occupations that had been traditionally been held by men. For the wartime effort, women worked in factories producing munitions, and building ships and airplanes. They also served as air-raid wardens, fire officers and evacuation officers, Women also drove and repaired fire engines, trains, and trams. Women also served their countries and supported their families as conductors, clerical workers, and nurses. The welders pictured here were employed by the Landers, Frary, & Clark plant in New Britain Connecticut. Landers, Frary, & Clark was a kitchen supply company that operated from 1862 until 1965, when it was sold to General Electric. During the wars, the company produced a large range of items deemed essential for wartime. These products included mess kits, sabers, knives, and gas masks. This photo was taken in June 1943 by renowned Black photo documentarian Gordon Parks (1912-2006), for the Office of War Information. The OWI documented the war effort in films, texts, photographs, radio programs, and posters. Most people think the pioneers of hand-drawn animation were all men. According to animation scholar Mindy Johnson, "History is recorded, preserved, written about and archived from a male perspective, and so nobody had really examined the level of what Women did - their contribution was often just passed off as a single sentence, if at all." After discovering an old photo 📸 from the early 1920s, Mindy started digging through archives and discovered that Bessie Mae Kelley started her career in 1917 as a director and animator. On this day in 1945, Wilma Mankiller was born. Wilma made HERstory by becoming the first Woman elected to serve as chief of the Cherokee Nation. She served as principal chief for ten years from 1985 to 1995. She was the author of a national-bestselling autobiography, Mankiller: A Chief and Her People and co-authored Every Day Is a Good Day: Reflections by Contemporary Indigenous Women.
