The first generation Geländewagen production spanned over quite a while, so they aren’t uncommon in Germany in standard diesel form - but seeing a petrol variant, and one in AMG spec, well that’s another story. I love the early G55 - these cars are post-merger, but still hold that pre-merger character of under-the-radar aesthetic changes with a true “performance +” approach. What I mean by that - the transition to AMG variant didn’t really do anything to hurt the G’s fundamental off-road capabilities, apart from that side-exit exhaust. The Beetle RSI - peak Ferdinand Piëch era Volkswagen: incredibly over-engineered, extremely cool details (see carbon door panels, milled aluminum and alcantara sun shades, one-piece but tiltable leather trimmed Recaros), and extremely rare. This one is number 000 of 250 - the final series prototype. What’s even rarer? That’s the Beetle RSI Cabrio - a proof-of-concept that never got final sign-off, was partially disassembled ready for scrap, then forgotten. A couple years later, the fine technicians at @volkswagen.classic.de managed to track this beauty down, decided to bring it back to former glory. Differences to the “normal” RSI? Koenig seats from the MK4 R32 Golf, no exotic Aluminium and leather interior trim, single exhaust instead of the dual Remus system, and front-wheel drive instead of the Haldex-based 4-motion. That beauty of a bodykit, VW Motorsport wheels, and VR6 motor with its oh-so-arousing song remained.
