Another year has come and gone and this one ended on some big changes for the old high fives crew which is why it has taken me a bit to get this annual list out. As usual it was super hard for me to narrow down what I listened to this year and as usual I went overboard because of my inability to trim this to just a 30-album podcast. Washer- 'Improved Means to Deteriorated Ends'. My top album of the year and now one of my favourite bands. It's a masterpiece, 'Cheap Therapy' will get you in the feels. @washerfacts Blair Gun- 'Blaspheme Queen'. I've probably played this the most of any release this year, 'Coke Syrup' and 'Man of the Hour' have been in constant rotation. @blair_gun_band Sincere Engineer- 'Cheap Grills'. Bloody brilliant album, energetic, catchy and original. 'Anemia' is opening track of the year. @sincereengineer @decentcriminal 'There's More To It Than Climbing'. A triumph. This album reminds me of SD Warren paper plant in Muskegon on the shores of Lake Michigan..in the winter working with the crews building a building on top of the building, riding the man-lift, a minimal industrial version of an elevator, hand hold and toe holds bolted to a vertical conveyor belt...rising up story after story through dark passages and crawl spaces filled with decades of grime and blacken pulp, the machinery of the paper plant and the hammering of the construction crews echoing into the chunk-chink grinding of the man-lift elevator...your free hand using every muscle it has to hold the heavy lead case that contained the Iridium 192 radioactive isotope, only the size of a Igloo lunch cooler but heavy as an anvil and hoping the people above you are just as committed to holding on to their power tools and tool boxes...that man-lift because it was my favorite part of the job, and this album reminds me of that, rising up until you step off into the open air of the I-beam construction, this huge upper section being built on top of the older structure...blustering winds and bitter cold, but like this album, some release and liberating waits at the end of the journey...sitting in the dark on an I-beam, holding on for your life but also relaxing, radioactive isotope in its box where it belongs, the dark of Lake Michigan like an abyss…this album like that man-lift...dark, cold, fast and industrial...rattling and unsettling, smelling of death and rising from the choppy dark waters of the 1980s, menacing mix of human flesh and mechanical, some release as it rises through cold claustrophobic into arm-stretching and pounding of steel winds, open air caged in cement and rebar. "When Irish-born Count Vaseline/The Mighty Stef songwriter Stef Murphy met Stiff Little Fingers guitar tech Jamie Mechan in Nashville, Tennessee, it began a musical partnership of the highest order. After cranking out a few tunes at Mechan’s fledgling studio, 302 Sound…The band was rounded out by drummer Ryan Sweeney (Cheap Time) and Eli Steele (Sweet Knives.) Dubbing themselves The Sleeveens, an Irish term for a trixter, the band got to work. After recording and releasing their highly-touted “Give My Regards To The Dancing Girls” 45rpm single on Sweeney’s Sweet Time Records, they finished off their 11 track debut LP. The quartet were soon approached by longrunning punk label Dirtnap Records (Marked Men, Exploding Hearts) for the album’s 2024 release. The resulting LP is an homage to the kind of classic punk Chiswick, New Rose and Stiff Records were releasing 45 years before The Sleeveens existed. With earworm melodies and screaming guitars, the foursome have crafted one of the best albums of the year.
