WASHINGTON: The United States (US) made it clear that it does not take positions on the internal matters of Pakistan, and the imprisonment of PTI’s founder is a matter for the Pakistani government to address. Addressing a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller was asked about the claim of a Pakistani Senator that the United States is working closely with Pakistan to end the unjust imprisonment of the former prime minister. “No, we do not take a position on those matters. Those are matters for the government of Pakistan to decide,” responded Miller. To another question about the security situation in Pakistan, Miller noted that “Pakistan has suffered a great deal at the hands of terrorists. We regret the loss of life and injuries sustained and offer our heartfelt condolences to those affected by this terrorist attack and remain committed to working with Pakistan to address the shared threat posed by terrorist groups throughout the region.” Speaking about the treatment of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, the spokesperson asked Pakistani authorities to respect the non-return advisory. “We have been in close and constant communication with the Government of Pakistan on the safety of individuals in US resettlement and immigration pathways. We will continue to work with the Government of Pakistan to address any issues or concerns. It is in both our countries’ interests to ensure the safe and efficient resettlement of those individuals. ISLAMABAD: PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat has challenged the ban over meetings with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder in Adiala Jail, News reported on Wednesday. Punjab home department yesterday banned meetings with the PTI founder in Adiala Jail, citing security threats. Marwat in his plea in court argued that the provincial home department has not been authorized to impose ban on meetings in jail. He has pleaded to the court to declare the ban order as void. He said that all parliamentarians will stage protest if the ban on meetings with the party’s leader not lifted. The home department has imposed ban on meetings for two weeks the sources within the Punjab home department earlier said, while media coverage is also prohibited in front of Adiala Jail’s gate no-5. The security officers stated that media coverage has not been allowed and directed that the media teams should stay 2km away from the jail. It is to be noted that Tuesday and Thursday were reserved by Adiala Jail administration for the meetings with the PTI founder on the orders of the court, but now the meetings have been banned for two weeks. RAWALPINDI: A special court hearing cipher case on Tuesday handed a 10-year jail term, each, to former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, The former prime minister and the former foreign minister were facing trial in cipher case in Adiala Jail from last year for ‘distorting’ the facts of the diplomatic cipher. Both the PTI leaders were accused of conspiracy to misuse the contents of the cipher to fulfill nefarious purposes. Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain announced the verdict in cipher case soon after recording the statements of the two accused under Section 342 during the hearing today (Tuesday). The court in its verdict said the prosecution had enough evidence to prove the charges against the former prime minister and ex-foreign minister.
