~ The Big Apple Bites A Battleship ~ 97 Years Ago โ (Sun/Mon) May 1-2nd, 1927, New York Harbor: USS Colorado (BB-45) is the lead ship of the Colorado-Class Battleships of the US Navy. She and her sisters, Maryland (BB-46) & West Virginia (BB-48) represent the latest in naval design. Over 600 feet long, nearly 100 feet wide, and weighing in at 32,600 tons, their engines turn four massive propellers at over 28,000 shaft horsepower, driving them across the seas with a range of 8,000 miles at speeds up to 21 knots. 1,080 Officers, Sailors, and Marines will call each one โhome.โ Fearsomely, they wield the Navyโs most lethal weapon yet โ the new 16-inch Mk. 1 rifle. Eight of these guns are spaced out across four turrets, each able to hurl a 1-ton shell nearly 20 miles. Built at the end of WW1 and commissioned in the early 1920s, with the Washington Naval Treaty in 1922, they will be Americaโs last new battleships until the North Carolina-Class are built in the late 1930s. For all of their might and firepower, thereโs one thing they canโt fight โ the treachery of New York Harbor. On Sunday, May 1st, 1927, USS Colorado goes hard aground on the innocuous yet pesky โDiamond Reefโ located in the very narrow waters between Governorโs Island, Brooklyn, and southern Manhattan. Initial attempts to get her off fail, and a public relations nightmare unfolds as tens of thousands of New Yorkers flood the waterfront to get a glimpse of the trapped behemoth. A flotilla of nearly 30 tugs from all over the harbor come to her aid, but sheโs absolutely immovable. Cameras from all sides, including the air, capture the fiasco. Colorado becomes front page news around the world as one of the Navyโs newest and fiercest warships lies helplessly trapped as the embarrassment and ire of the Navy rise like the tide. The tide does finally rise for Colorado, too. On the 2nd, she finally gets free, immediately shepherded up the East River to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for an immediate hull inspection. The only real damage, however, is to the Navyโs pride. USS Colorado would go on to a long, proud, and eventful career. And New York Harbor added another chapter to her legendary history.

Throughout the 19th century, the East River WAS the Port of New York โย and a major source of revenue for NYC. Therefore, when the call came to construct a bridge connecting the cities of Brooklyn and New York, one of the big engineering and design concerns was how to minimize the disruption to the flow of river traffic. John A. Roebling thus proposed a suspension bridge that would only require two unmovable stone towers โย and with the longest span yet achieved in the world to maximize the unimpeded space. Photo taken from the bow of the 1930โs built BRITANIS, following the 1959 built ROTTERDAM, which docked beside the 1969 built QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 on the early very cold morning of October 9, 1981. This was my first cruise alone, and it was only an overnight round trip cruise from New York for $59.00 u.s. dollars. I wish that I had taken more photos when I was onboard this old liner. At this time the QE2 still has her original funnel livery. The Fulton Ferry (at center) making its trip across the East River. Beginning operation in 1814, this steam ferry served as a vital link between Manhattan and Long Islands. In providing easier and more reliable transport across this waterway, the Fulton Ferry played an important role in the early-19th-century growth of both Manhattanโs Seaport and the City of Brooklyn. By the time that this photo was taken ca. 1885, however, the ferryโs biggest competitor had already arrived on the scene: the Brooklyn Bridge (visible in the upper right-hand corner). Necessitated in large part thanks to the success of the Fulton Ferry, the Brooklyn Bridgeโs completion in 1883 proved to be the beginning of the end for this revolutionary steamship (which would make its final journey in 1924).
