Deb Olthof is a mom to three children, including Nolan (2016), who was born with bilateral clubfeet. Nolanโs clubfeet became complex soon after treatment started, but happily his feet were corrected after switching care providers and receiving skilled treatment from Dr. Pirani. Appointment free Wednesday! ๐คฉ Itโs strange to not be spending our Wednesday afternoon at the hospital this week but Maeve is enjoying a much needed break from appointments. These casts are getting a bit grubby (weโve already needed to change the tapes twice ๐ฉ) and we still have another week in them before theyโre being changed (into her final cast ever!). The only downside of not being at the hospital this week is that weโre not able to do our weekly hospital bath or kiss her little toes for another 7 days. She spent 8 weeks in the NICU due to prematurity before coming home 2 weeks before her due date. At 39 weeks gestation Addy started her treatment journey at McMaster Hospital in Hamilton Ontario. Our casting journey was long and complicated. She was so tiny that she was hard to cast and had a few slipped casts. We sought out multiple opinions and had consulted with many doctors. After almost 3 months of casting Addy had her tenotomy procedure under general anesthesia due to having an atypical clubfoot. What a difference in those casts! It feels like weโre making real progress now ๐ซ Poor Maeve barely slept the first night after her tenotomy, she didnโt want to be laid down in her cot at all. She had little naps on mummy and daddy throughout the night, but nothing other than cuddles and a little bit of Calpol would comfort her. โค๏ธโ๐ฉน Friday was easier, we got lots more of her gorgeous smiles, but she still wanted all day contact naps. Today we walked into our appointment expecting Maeveโs casts to go on and to see if tenotomy was on the cards for her, in the coming weeks. Instead, we were told Maeve is a good candidate for early tenotomy and that theyโd be performing it there and then! On went the numbing cream and we were given 20 minutes to decompress and give Maeve lots of cuddles. We were initially worried weโd had no time to process and prepare for the op, but in hindsight Iโm glad we didnโt have that week of dwelling on it. The tendon release was so quick, we got to hold her hand through it, and immediately Maeve had the flex in her foot that we needed, it was incredible. Mummy and Maeve had big cries during, but as per usual, our team were outstanding. Her feet are now in that beautiful outward position where theyโll stay for two more weeks. On the 5th, weโll go back for one final week of casting to get a tiny bit more of a lift, which meansโฆ BOOTS AND BAR 12TH JUNE! The next step is in touching distance and we cannot wait to be done with casts for good! Itโs been such a gruelling few days for Maeve. Sheโs had two casts, one slip, a set of vaccinations and now a tenotomy, but we couldnโt be prouder of our smiley girl, she is so resilient itโs unbelievable. Double slip ๐ฉ I woke up to change Maeveโs nappy this morning, opened her sleep bag and realised both casts had slipped during the night. I had a call with the specialist who said letโs just get them off today and see her as planned tomorrow. We were on our way to have Maeveโs first vaccinations and one actually came clean off in my hand in the doctors surgery before I even had chance to soak it! Theyโre going to try a different casting technique altogether tomorrow and see how we go. Pink casts are on! Week 5/Cast 5๐ช๐ผ๐ฉท We had two of our amazing team see Maeve today. Despite 4 days of freedom, her feet are improving as they initially scored a 5.5 for severity and are now a 2.5! Thats great progress ๐ซ๐ซถ๐ป We were told her feet are almost ready for tenotomy but still need a little more flex. Today, Maeve actually fell asleep on the bed whilst she was cast, the most peaceful appointment yet. We go back on Wednesday for the second part of our โaccelerated weekโ and theyโll assess then to see if she could be ready for her tenotomy in a week! Due to the tightness in Maeveโs feet, they say a tenotomy is going to work wonders once sheโs had that done. At my last visit to the hospital, Denise had told mommy that there were certain things that could help build up strength in my foot and calf. Swimming, marital arts and rock climbing were all suggested. I go swimming now, it's so much fun! I started lessons in April. Today my Auntie took me wall climbing for the first time.
