I might have mentioned in the past that I like cemeteries. It's not like I have some weird gothic obsession but kind of a respect for the history and wonder for the lives the people lived who are interred there. That comes from one of my first High School jobs being a cemetery caretaker and mowing and trimming around 1000s of head stones and digging more than a few graves by hand. There's peace and solitude. When we were driving to get flowers last week, I noticed this cemetery perched on a steep slope with the headstones and vaults touching shoulder to shoulder. I have the utmost respect for those that cut the grass and appreciate the difficulty getting the casket where it needs to go. Sometimes during the work week it's almost impossible to make it out to take pictures with everything in the schedule. I ran around to quite a few locations yesterday morning looking for interesting subjects. It was still before 7:00 AM at this point and I decided to take a drive up to Troy Hill. I hadn't been here in a little while and this is normally a spot I head to to capture lighting over the city. A lot of my sunrise views were being blocked from the west side of the city, so I decided to head here to capture the Golden Hour rays hitting the city directly. I was excited when I woke up early and saw a fog advisory for the area. I was hoping it would be the kind of fog where the tops of the buildings looked like they were hovering above the clouds. I waited a long time for this shot, because most of the morning, I couldn't even see the city. Normally I see fog come up the Ohio, but this fog was moving fast from the Mon towards the Point. The funny thing is, when I crossed the Liberty Bridge, the city was mostly clear on the other side! Allegheny Commons Park on the Northside is like a step back in time. It has picturesque trails, a reflecting pool in Lake Elizabeth and stunning views of downtown, regardless of the time of day. I can just imagine ladies in hoop skirts and men in straw hats and top hats strolling the serene paths. Here's another aerial shot from yesterday's sunrise, but here I was able to nestle the drone up next to the top of the Civil War monument, so he appears to be standing watch over the city. This was originally part of a much more elaborate Civil War Memorial called Monument Hill on the present-day site of CCAC. This spire was moved here and is all that remains. I only have one gripe about the park, and that is that the East and West half are no longer connected to each other. They are split by the railroad tracks and were connected by a walking bridge. The bridge has been removed, making it inconvenient to pass from one part of the park to another. Although I started off on Grandview, I could tell that the sunrise color was not going to pop due to a band of clouds at the horizon. Overhead, skies were clear so I knew I wanted to get some Golden Hour light at my next planned shot. I had a very tough time deciding what to post first today. So, I decided to go with something new for me. After I finished up at Allegheny Commons Park, I headed to another famous North Side location, Randyland ! I have to say, with all sincerity, that I had a thrill of excitement when I drove up Arch Street and saw Randyland in the rising sun. It gave me all the joy of when I bribed a security guard in Barcelona to sneak into Parc Guell to photograph it at sunrise. I only took a few minutes here, but my smile will last the rest of the day! Normally there's a good bit of color in the sky before sunrise. Yesterday was a little different. Most of the best color didn't appear until right around the official sunrise time. I figured I would give everyone a little break before I share my Grand Finale Lightning shot. Yesterday was an unexpected, beautiful sunrise. Unfortunately, I had an early client meeting and I could only enjoy it from my car. This morning's was predicted to be even better. While it turned out nice, it just wasn't up to yesterday. I started out at the West End Overlook to get some drone shots and then I planned to get to Mount Washington. But Dang, my favorite short cut between the two spots was closed. I knew I would miss the sunrise if I drove the whole way to McArdle so I pulled into Station Sqaure when I noticed the sun about to rise over this tug, the Captain Stogie White. While looking back at some of my Pittsburgh photo archives for a shot to share, I came across this one as well from the tail end of that gorgeous sunrise back on January 12th. I was taking photos that morning leading right up until the color was completely gone, as the colors were incredible as they changed leading up to, during, and slightly after. I also love the lighting in this composition, as it is hitting the buildings on the right side in this shot, also creating more of a silhouette of the city skyline against the orange sky. The tugboat traveling down the Monongahela River to the confluence really completes this shot in my opinion, and adds a great point of interest. Enjoy! It’s been a little while since I’ve posted a shot of the Steel City, as I’ve been busy capturing some areas in the Mon Valley that I had been wanting to capture, and then of course this past weekend took a trip up to Vermont. I went digging through some of my Pittsburgh photo archives and found this gem from a sunrise from middle of last month that I hadn’t shared. I shared a few shots already from this sunrise last month, but not this zoomed in shot of the city. This was honestly one of the best sunrises I’ve ever witnessed over Pittsburgh at the West End Overlook, and I took quite a few shots that morning. It was one of those sunrises that had color that lasted quite a while. The water was also very calm on all three rivers, which is unusual, so I was definitely fortunate to have captured the reflection that I did. Shots like these of Pittsburgh I consider timeless, and will never get old capturing. I look forward to hopefully getting back to Pittsburgh in a few weeks to see if I can come up with some new, interesting compositions to share with you all. I have some areas I’m going to focus on in the upper Mon Valley in the next few weeks, and some interesting shots I’m looking forward to capturing to share with you all, so until I go to Pittsburgh again, I figured I’d share this shot from last month. Taking it back to a few Saturday mornings ago at the West End Overlook from a sunrise I watched over Pittsburgh the day after the area got dumped with several inches of snow! I already shared a similar shot I took from this exact same morning, but that one was before the sun crossed the horizon. In this shot, the sun had just crossed the horizon, and I was able to get a great sunburst against the oak tree, while centering the city in the frame. Sunrises over Pittsburgh from this spot never get old, especially when there is snow on the ground, and when there is a colorful sky in the morning to contrast beautifully against the snow! Saturday morning while watching the sunrise from West End Overlook, I stuck around for a bit hoping to capture a sunburst. The sun had been above the horizon for several minutes, but I had to wait for the sun to peak between some clouds, so that I would be able to capture a sunburst. The color in the sky didn’t exactly spread across the horizon like I was hoping to see, but there was still some great color scattered around. While taking several shots for this composition, a barge was traveling up the Ohio River, entering my frame and giving it a nice detail, as it was crossing under the West End Bridge. You can also see the barge traveling through large sheets of nice, which were deposited by the Allegheny River and floated down into the Ohio River. What really makes this shot in my opinion is the way that the light from the sunburst is gently casting a beautiful yellow/orange tint on the undisturbed snow. While at West End Overlook yesterday morning, I was waiting for a little while until the sky actually popped with color, so I was looking for some other fun scenes to capture, and this composition here caught my eye as a quaint, winter scene in the Manchester Neighborhood of Pittsburgh, on the North Side. The church I focused on as the focal point of this shot is Original Church of God Deliverance. I thought it was a beautiful structure, as old cathedral style churches usually are. What I love about this shot is the first morning light hitting the buildings, while the street lights and building lights are still prominent in the low lit areas in the neighborhood. I love capturing these “village-like” scenes with the snow covered rooftops of the houses and other buildings. I have a few more shots of the Manchester Neighborhood that I also captured yesterday morning that I’ll be sharing at some point, but this shot here was far and away my favorite of those. Enjoy! Just when I thought the magical scenes would be over for a while as I knew it wasn’t going to be snowing much yesterday, the fallen snow from the night before provided endless magical scenes this morning while I spent a good half of yesterday morning in Pittsburgh, starting at the West End Overlook for sunrise, then going to Mt. Washington, and eventually the North Shore. I visited a few other locations south of the city today as well, but I’ll get to those later on. Yesterday morning’s sunrise wasn’t the most outstanding sky I’ve ever seen, but it certainly wasn’t a total bust either, like I had assumed watching the sunrise, and with no color until a little after sunrise, that briefly popped. The pastels of yesterday morning’s sunrise were perfect for a backdrop against the dormant Oak tree at the West End Overlook, spreading its branches across the snow-covered landscape, framing the city. It was a beautiful, but fridged morning, but that didn’t stop me from spending over FIVE HOURS outside yesterday morning, capturing as many beautiful scenes around the city as I could think of from locations I had visited before. I figured I’d share another one of my favorite shots from yesterday afternoon at the Heinz History Center, this time including a few other iconic displays on the ground floor. Centered between the green pillars are is an old Heinz Buggy, and slightly the right and in the background is an old fire engine, both which would have been considered common sights in Pittsburgh many decades ago. I tried to get a little creative with this shot with centering the buggy and the fire engine between the pillars, and capturing them from an angle instead of straight on. I have a few more shots from yesterday I’ll be sharing from the Heinz History Center, but this was a shot I wanted to share by itself, as a great bit of nostalgia captured in one shot. Enjoy! Here’s a shot from the tail end of that incredible sunrise over Pittsburgh last Friday, and though I’ve shared some similar angles from the West End overlook, this one is different than each one I’ve posted. After the peak colors of pink and purple, the sky transitioned to beautiful shades of orange with some vibrant yellow on the horizon right before the sun crossed the horizon. This is also one of the few shots that I took that morning including the tree branch outstretched into the scene over the West End Overlook, not including the trunk. I think that the tree branch adds some perspective to this composition, and adds a point of interest to the top right of this shot, as you look out over the city from behind the branch, as the skyline draws you towards the center of this image. I just love colorful skies that last for a while at sunrise or sunset, and change colors as the lighting changes from the rising sun, in this case. Skies like this never get old. Enjoy! How about something a little different this morning, and a bit of Pittsburgh nostalgia? On Sunday afternoon, I went to the Heinz History Center with my good buddy Evan and we walked through the museum this afternoon. I hadn’t been to this museum in at least 10 years, and it had been even longer for my buddy. It was great to walk through it, learn some new things, and reminisce on things of the past that we could remember within our lifetime, although this shot here, features something that was long before our time, but possibly some of you may remember these? And obviously, I had to bring my camera, as I don’t go many places without it! This shot here is of an example of one of the old cable trollies that traveled through some of the various neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, and downtown, many decades ago. It’s interesting to think what the city would have been like with these traveling around town. What a time that must have been, before the city of Pittsburgh had trollies or the Port Authority Transportation in place. I would love to hear some stories from some of my elder following, of what life was like in Pittsburgh when these were traveling through the city on a daily basis. During Friday’s spectacular sunrise in Pittsburgh, I decided to do a closeup shot of PPG Place zoomed in from the West End Overlook for something a little different. I usually don’t find compositions of closeups of the buildings downtown, at least from the West End overlook, but I wanted to try something different, and I’m glad I did! The lighting and colors in the sky gave the city an almost purple tint, because farther from the horizon was pink and purple stretching across the sky beyond the yellow and orange on the horizon. I also centered PPG Place between the two other tall buildings to help balance the composition, and I love the results! I still have several more shots from that incredible sunrise from Friday morning, different from what I’ve shared already. I hope you all aren’t bored of them yet. Enjoy! Here’s a very different shot from the others I’ve posted from yesterday’s sunrise, and one that I usually try to remember to get each time I’m capturing the sunrise from the West End Overlook. The city framed under this beautiful Oak tree creates a wonderful composition, combining both urban and natural settings into one! I positioned myself so that the yellow and orange band across the sky before the color had really spread across the sky was centered between the horizon and underneath the large branch of the tree. This is a very popular composition at this location, so I’m sure many of you have probably seen this shot taken during various sunrises. Shots like these never get old though, and capturing it with a different sunrise each time makes each one unique. Enjoy! Here’s another shot from yesterday, slightly different from the ones I’ve shared already. In this shot, I focused a little more on the detail of the city while the lighting was low enough that the city lights still shined, and I also included a little more foreground in this shot to include a barge along the Ohio River that was about to travel up the river. I also included some of the West End Bridge in this shot to add another point of interest to the foreground, all while still including plenty of sky to capture the beautiful colors from yesterday morning’s incredible sunrise. This was another shot that was taken almost half an hour before the actual sunrise, and the color was already so vibrant, so I knew it was going to be a fantastic sunrise, and even fantastic is probably an understatement. All three rivers being as still and clear as glass was definitely an added bonus, and something you can’t always count on, so I was thankful for that as well. Enjoy! Here’s another shot from yesterday morning’s incredible sunrise over Pittsburgh, and though similar to the few shots I shared yesterday, this one here is slightly different from the two. While this shot had enough lighting that the city lights didn’t really show at this point in the morning, I wanted to still include a shot with a good bit of sky, but a closer zoom in of the city and more detail in the buildings and bridges, making this shot different from the previous two that I shared. A towboat had already traveled up the Ohio River and up the Monongahela River, creating a distorted look on the water beginning at the confluence, but it added some unique texture to this composition. The yellow on the horizon fading to orange, fading to pink, fading to purple was spectacular! Sunrises like this don’t happen every morning, and skies like this are honestly my favorite skies to capture. Enjoy! Here’s another shot from the stunning sunrise this morning in Pittsburgh. This shot here was right at the peak of the colors. This morning was one of those sunrises where the colors changed in the whole duration of the sunrise, and it was incredible to watch different clouds change different colors at different altitudes. What I love about this shot is the silhouette of the skyline against that vivid orange sky! The water got a little more choppy as the morning went on because a towboat traveled up the Ohio River during the sunrise, and had already passed through by the time I captured this shot. I still have so many more shots to share with you all from this morning in Pittsburgh and even yesterday morning during the sunrise in my town of Monongahela, so I’ll have lots of new content to share in these next several days. This morning’s sunrise over Pittsburgh was absolutely incredible! I thought yesterday morning’s sunrise that I captured in Monongahela wouldn’t be beat for a little while, but I’d put this one right up there with it. This morning’s sunrise was definitely more vibrant than yesterday’s though, and the color lasted for a good 45 minutes or so leading up to the actual sunrise time. This morning’s sunrise was definitely one of the most vibrant sunrises I’ve witnessed in at least a few months! What was also a bonus this morning was how calm all three rivers were! This shot here is a 30 second exposure, as I wanted to give the lights a “starburst” affect, and I also wanted to capture some light trails on West Carson Street in the bottom right corner. I love morning’s like what I witnessed this morning, when the color lasts for a long while and gives me time to capture quite a few different compositions even from the same location. I have quite a few more shots to share from this morning, but this shot here was one of my favorites, and was one of the first shots I took this morning. I love it when there’s early color in the sky leading up to a sunrise and the lights of the city are still evident in the shot. Posting something a little different this evening, as I have not shared too many black and white compositions, but this shot in particular sets off a sort of nostalgic look in black and white, as the colored version was more drab. The stillness of the rivers created a fantastic reflection, unusual for late morning when this shot was taken. Sometimes photos look better in black and white on cloudy or overcast days, and this shot here was certainly no exceptions. Sometimes its black and white photos that end up being the most timeless photos, and I’d have to say this shot is one of my new favorites I’ve taken of Pittsburgh. Enjoy! Hopefully you all don’t mind a few more holiday related images before we get too far into January, but I had a few left I intended to share before Christmas and didn’t get to them, but I’ll start with this shot here. This shot is a slightly different take on the LED Christmas Tree at Point State Park, focusing more on the tree itself and just a few of the buildings of the Pittsburgh skyline, stead of the entire skyline. I took this shot a few weeks ago when I went to West End Overlook early one morning hoping for a nice sunrise. I didn’t end up with the sunrise I was hoping for, but I still walked away with some great shots, this one being one of them. The reflection on the water at the confluence was also rather still. For this particular shot, I did a one second exposure, as most of the shots I took that morning during blue hour were 30 secound exposures, but I wanted to go for a different look as far as lights and light streaks go. Yesterday morning, I woke up early and drove into Pittsburgh with a few shots in mind at the West End Overlook, while hoping this morning would also present a nice sunrise, and I was hoping to capture some early color. Though I didn’t get the sunrise I was hoping for, some of my best shots of the morning were right before dawn, like this shot here. This isn’t a fancy or extra creative shot by any means, but it’s definitely a classic, and one I hadn’t captured yet during this Christmas season. Pittsburgh at night and early in the morning already looks fantastic with one of the most beautiful skylines in the world in my opinion. Add an LED Christmas Tree at Point State Park, and you have yourself a pretty spectacular scene! One unique thing about this shot I must say that does set it apart from other shots I’ve taken from the West End Overlook is the moderately calm reflection of the skyline in the water at the confluence. It’s not often the water is this calm at the confluence, especially with barge traffic coming and down the Ohio River and Monongahela River, so this was definitely a bonus! Enjoy! Here’s a five image panorama of that gorgeous sunrise from last Saturday morning, that’s very different from the other shots I’ve shared from this particular morning. Slightly after the peak of the colors, the clouds shifted northwest of the city, so the majority of the best colors in the sky at this point were off to the far left of downtown, but I wanted a composition with the colors and the city still, so I opted for this five image panorama. Most sunrise shots you see of the city are with the color directly over or behind the city, and though I’ve shared several examples like stated, I thought this was a unique composition, and something a little different. Here’s another shot I meant to share earlier this week of that incredible sunrise from last Saturday over Pittsburgh from the West End Overlook. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts I shared from this particular sunrise, this sunrise was honestly one of the best sunrises I’ve seen over Pittsburgh, or anywhere for that matter. The color was evident over 45 minutes before the actually sunrise, and when that happens, you better believe it’s sure to be a stunner, and a stunner it was! The few shots I’ve already shared from this sunrise were from before and after the peak, even as vibrant as those shots are, but this one here is probaby one of my most vibrant shots I have from that morning, right at the peak of the color! I also love the way that the light and color are hitting the south side of some of the buildings (right side of downtown). The lighting in this shot is probably what I love most, in addition to the vibrant colors. What I also love about this shot is the contrast of the city against the sky, and with some of the city lights still glowing slightly. It was one of those mornings that will stick out to me for quite a while as an all in all fantastic sunrise from before and even during the golden hour slightly after. Enjoy! I know this is a similar shot that I posted a few days back of that incredible sunrise I witnessed from the West End Overlook, this shot is slightly different because it showcases a little more of the sky, and I also zoomed out a little more for this shot. This shot also includes more area on the north shore and south shore of the Ohio River. The only thing that I wish I could change about this shot is the Christmas Tree at Point State Park had turned off by the time I took this shot, but none the less, this is still another one of my favorite shots I took during what was an outstanding sunrise. The pink and purple tones in the sky were incredible, with the orange and yellow closer to the horizon creating a gorgeous contrast as well. I also did a 30 second exposure for this composition to capture some slight movement in the clouds as they were drifting northwest of the city. Enjoy! Here’s another shot from Saturday morning, as I stuck around a bit during golden hour after the sun had crossed the horizon to see what interesting compositions I could get even though most of the color had faded in the sky at this point. What was perfect about this time of the morning though was that the sun was still low in the sky, so I was able to capture some fantastisc sunbursts from the West End Overlook. I was also fortunate enough to have a barge float up the Ohio River as well, on it’s way toward the Monongahela River. What I also love about this shot is the lighting, and how it created a pretty nice silhouette of downtown, with the rays from the sun stretching into the scene from the right side. With the gray skies today in the Mon Valley and Pittsburgh area, I thought I’d share another shot from yesterday’s outstanding sunrise over Pittsburgh from the West End Overlook. At this point during the morning, the clouds had began to shift to the northwest of downtown, making the best color at this point in the moring also northest of downtown, hence why I zoomed out for this shot and didn’t center the city in this composition like I did in my other couple of shots that I’ve shared with you all from this particular morning. What I also love about this shot is the barge that had floated up the Ohio River, and was on its way to docking along the river on the south shore. Though the rivers weren’t all that calm when I took this shot, some color from the sky was still relfecting off of the water. Like I stated in my first post from yesterday morning, this was honestly one of the most incredible sunrises I had ever witnessed over Pittsburgh! I’m so glad that I was there to capture it all. Here’s another shot from the tail end of this morning’s stunning sunrise, as the last bit of color remained just as the sun crossed the horizon to the right of the city. Sometimes by the time the sun crosses the horizon the color is pretty much gone, but this morning’s sunrise allowed some colors to linger for a minute while the sun had just risen. I was able to get a perfect sunburst in this shot while the sun was coming up and captured some of the remaining colors as well. What I also love about this shot is the way that the sun rays are hitting the remaning leaves on the vegetation in the foreground, and how it’s hitting the tips of the twigs and giving them almost a glowing affect. I also love how the first sunlight of the morning hits the right sides of the buildings downtown, making them shine when the sunlight hits the metal. Enjoy! Here’s another one of my favorite shots that I captured this morning in Pittsburgh from the West End Overlook. I’m sure most of you have seen this composition or variations of it, as this particular tree is one of the most photographed tree in probably all of Pittsburgh, but I couldn’t pass up this shot with the gorgeous sky this morning. What I also love about this shot are the Christmas lights strung from end to end on the railing at the West End Overlook, as it was still just dark enough that the lights were still shining, and with the beautiful sky to compliment it was well. Wow, man oh man, sheesh! These are just a few adjactives to describe this morning’s absolutely INCREDIBLE sunrise! I’ve woken up for dozens of sunrises in my short 14 month career of photography, and I can honestly say that this morning’s sunrise was one of the most amazing sunrise’s I’ve ever witnessed, or photographed! When I was driving into the city this morning, it was mostly clear skies, and could even see the stars. I was originally going to head to the North Shore to get some panoramas at sunrise, but most of the cloud cover that had moved in was to the northeast of the city, so facing the south from the Northside of the city would have left me with very little, to no clouds. When I got off of my exit off of I-279 to Northside, I turned around and hopped right back on I-279 in the other direction and raced my way up to the West End Overlook where I knew I from that vantage point, the clouds would be directly behind the city. When I first drove into the city, even before I had turned around, there was already some early color in the sky; shades of deep purple. I just had that feeling that it was going to be an incredible sunrise, and I was anxious to get to the West End Overlook. It's been another dreary day in the Mon Valley and Pittsburgh area, so I thought I'd brighten your evening with some sunshine on this Thanksgiving Eve, and throw it back to a few weeks ago to a gorgeous sunrise at the West End Overlook I witnessed. I had hoped that the sunrise would be a bright one once the sun was above the horizon with minimal clouds for the particular shot that I was after, and the shot I was after could not have worked out more perfectly! The leaves on this oak tree were at their peak and bright red in all of their glory! What I love about this shot is the way that the sun was hitting the red leaves, giving them a beautiful glow! I almost forgot I had more shots to share from this particular morning, but I was going back through looking for a few nice shots of the city from when the Autumn colors were at their peak, and that's when I stumbled upon this one, that I hadn't even edited yet until now. This morning after sunrise at the West End Overlook, I had a shot I was after that I took last year that I was very happy with, and I think I like this one even more! The one Oak tree at the overlook was pretty much at it's peak, and it was gorgeous the way that the sun illuminated the red leaves, giving them a vibrant red glow! I've seen several other photographers around Pittsburgh take similar shots like this one, so I can't say I came up with this shot, but this is a shot that I will probably attempt to capture every Autumn when it reaches it's peak. What I love about this shot in addition to the leaves, is the yellow fading to blue behind the tree creating the perfect backdrop for this beautiful tree. I also framed the Pittsburgh skyline with the outstretching branch, and it really creates the perfect Autumn composition/Cityscape scene. It was just as incredible of a scene as I remembered capturing last year, but I’ve learned a lot as far as photography goes since last fall, and I definitely improved on this composition. Enjoy! This morning, I drove into Pittsburgh to catch the sunrise at Westend Overlook, and though it was not the most vibrant sunrise I've ever witnessed, it had some great clouds scattered above the horizon, and some gentle pastels in the sky. I also usually don't include this much of the sky in my sunrise compositions in Pittsburgh, but I wanted to capture the high altitute clouds above the city. One other small detail that could be easily missed is in the top, towards the right corner of the frame, Venus was visible in the early stages of sunrise. It's not every day you're able to see one of the planets with a colorful sky, so that was a unique capture this morning as well. I have lots more to share from West End Overlook this morning, including some gorgeous fall foliage. I also visited a few other spots in the city this morning, so I'll be sharing a few shots from those spots as well. Stay tuned!
