I caught sight of @babyelll as I was chatting to @_coleharper and @daisybirchall in Thomas St., Manchester. I had seen Cole earlier and was pretty convinced she was someone I had photographed a year or so earlier AND she got the front cover of one of my coffee table books called “Beauty, 2023”. That pic of Cole is my next post. A little later in the afternoon I saw Cole again and knew for sure I had got the right lady, so I said hello. Overcoming fears. I challenged myself to start talking to strangers and asking to take their photographs. It felt weird and awkward to start with, but EVERY time I did it something beneficial beyond the photos always came out of the interaction. This amazing couple I called out to from across my balcony in Budapest. After the shoot and a chat they threw over some oils and a massage stick to help with a sore back I had been suffering with. 100 Strangers (71/100) This is the 71st street portrait in my 100 Strangers project. Adam was in town from Saint Louis while there are activities this weekend in George Floyd Square commemorating the 4th anniversary of the police murder of George Floyd. I met him while he was helping repaint the Mourning Passage mural on Chicago Avenue, which takes up almost an entire city block listing the names of people murdered by the police. As the paint fades throughout the year, each spring mural artist Mari Mansfield leads a team of volunteers to refresh the paint, welcoming anyone to join in. It’s powerful to me that George Floyd Square continues to attract people from around the country & the world. Adam is a sports photographer in St Louis. The Engine Driver Swipe ▶️ I recently managed to get a couple of portraits of the engine driver of the Churnet Valley Railway's 'The Breakfast Train', which was difficult because both of the engine crew were being blitzed by tourists asking questions and taking photographs - paparazzi style. . I didn't get his name, because there was very little time as all the staff were rushing around getting the next train ready for departure, but I did find out that this US built WWII engine cruises along at 25mph, which is the speed limit on Heritage Railways, but can get up to 55mph. This doesn't sound much, but it was designed for heavy, slow freight trains. . All this makes me sound like a Railway Enthusiast, which I'm not, although I'm not adverse to a bit of train travel, especially if it's luxury train travel. . Facebook recently sent me this memory. of a stranger I photographed while on the train. In 2022 I had a temporary job and every day for about a month I saw this man whose style fascinated me. I like authentic dressers .One day I started photographing him. He always had something interesting on and I love that he wore Converse sneakers. I am passionate about my Converse. I didn't want to date him, I was only interested in his clothing. I wouldn't mind meeting him, perhaps chating ,and maybe go shopping with him. We come across hundreds of strangers in our lives that we probably could be really good friends with but we would never know it because we just continue on our journey. Perhaps that's why I enjoy traveling so much, because our short visits force us to interact with strangers in a way we never would with a passerby. Anyway, my temp job ended. He was staying with us for three nights as part of a 69 day trip to Europe and North Africa - ya know……. the old Porto, Marrakesh, Andalusia, St. Helens pilgrimage but with only limited kneeling. 5 days in Manchester - No.19 it’s all about timing. She was with a bunch of pals near a bus stop in Piccadilly in Manchester. I didn’t know how much time I would have so I quickly set the shot up with this nicely coloured bus. But it pulled off almost immediately. Another bus pulled up within seconds and that provided an excellent yellow backdrop but by then I had invited all of her pals to be part of a pic. When I heard her name it immediately made me think of a massively significant image by big cheese U.S. photographer, Richard Avedon. It is called “Dovima with elephants”. Dovima was a super model of her day and “with elephants” is one of the most famous pix of the C20th.
