Since the start of year 2021, there has been an alarming amount of scoliosis patient visits at the clinic. Most of the patients are females with an average age of 12 y/o. About 30% of the patients are a candidate for surgery, 70% are fitted with brace. With this, we are encouraging parents and guardians to regularly check their children for any signs. Signs may include the following: 1. Uneven shoulders 2. Uneven hips 3. Prominent back 4. One side of rib cage more forward than another 5. June is scoliosis awareness month. Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine commonly affecting females ages 9-12. But males are no excemption as well. Most of the cases are idiopathic meaning that there is no known cause. Treatment may vary depending on the age of the patient and angle of the spine. What can PT do? Physical therapists provide treatment by the use of pain modalities and exercises to prevent progression of curve. PTs may also recommend the specific type of brace needed by a patient. Together with the primary physician, the PT will closely monitor the patient and provide the appropriate treatment. What can you do? If you are a parent, or guardian or an individual, you may check yourself or your child for the following signs and symptoms. 1. Uneven shoulders 2. Uneven hips 3. A hump on back upon reaching the toes. 4. One side of the rib is more prominent. 4. Constant pain on back during prolonged sitting or standing or any activity.
