Our Gallery is excited to present "Faces of Ice," works by local artist Billy Howard. These works are now on display at Our Center with an opening reception scheduled for April 21st at 3PM. Meet the artist and browse this extraordinary gallery! Get to know the artist: Billy began his history of creating images in 1960s San Francisco, snapping with his father's slide camera at the age of 10. Documenting ever since, he's had shows in galleries, coffee houses and theater lobbies in SF, San Jose, Montecito, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Sacramento, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Oakland and New York City. His developing techniques were honed in the 1990s as printing assistant to Ansel Adams-trained Life Magazine contributor Joseph Schuett. Three of his pieces were featured in the city-produced Reno Lens, including the full plate of page 3. His photos of local landscapes and wildlife are frequently seen in the Reno Gazette Journal. During the month of March, we recognize Women's History Month, a month acknowledging and celebrating the women who have worked tirelessly to shape our past and create a better future. Our Center wants to honor the legacies and contributions of LGBTQIA+ women who have helped to build our culture and paved the way for equal rights. We hope this month that you take some time to recognize and uplift the voices of women in our community, especially those of trans women, who face prejudice and violence at disproportionate rates. February 1st kicks off Black History Month, a month to celebrate and recognize the work and contributions of Black trailblazers. Our Center wants to recognize the groundbreaking and significant work of Black LGBTQIA+ people, without whom our culture, society, and civil liberties would not exist. It’s imperative, now more than ever, to uplift and amplify Black voices and histories to ensure Black queer people are heard, seen, and given space to be themselves, fully and without challenge. The Alliance of Inclusive Radical Kids is looking for gender diverse friends and allies between the ages of 8-11 years old! Come to the play group and learn, create, explore and play! Our Center is joining Willie Puchert in extending an open invitation to all of our community members to join the Washoe County Library Board Meeting on Dec. 20th at 5:00 p.m. at the Downtown Reno Library. We're asking our community to share your opinions and stand up against the censorship of LGBTQIA+ themes and media in our public libraries. As a regular attendee of this year’s board meetings Puchert has observed a small but loud group of citizens advocating for the removal of programs and books at our public libraries, including Drag Story Hour. This group has also called for the removal of the board director and members who will not give in to these demands. This push comes during a rapid increase in book bans across the nation. The American Library Association (ALA) reported “1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago" (ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/by-the-numbers). The ALA advocates in defense of intellectual freedom, which protects First Amendment rights of all members in our community to read, speak, and learn freely. “If you can plan to attend this meeting we can stand united against bigotry and censorship. It will be great to stand with my LGBTQIA2s+ family and showcase our values of tolerance, respect and rational discourse,” said Stacey Spain, Our Center Executive Director. As a community, we can join together to make our voices heard, and let our libraries know we support their efforts to serve all members of the public by including LGBTQIA+ books, media, programs, and themes in these institutions. The meeting will take place at the Reno Public Library located at 301 S Center St, Reno, NV 8950. This month, we're highlighting one of the volunteers who helps keep our Center open and welcome to the community. If you've been at the Center, you've probably seen him around, either at the front desk or doing some general maintenance and custodial work. Martin Koehler's been volunteering at Our Center for the past several years, and has since always been around to offer a cheerful greeting or friendly smile! Martin decided to volunteer at the Center to help support the community's queer-led organization. "As a gay man, I like spending my time supporting others in the community and giving back to a queer-serving resource." Martin said. When he's not at the Center, Martin spends time with Jason, his husband of 16 years, who he enjoys traveling with. Martin also volunteers with the Reno Police Department as part of the Senior Auxiliary Volunteer Effort. Every Monday from 11-11:30AM, Katie Louvat teaches a short sequence of asanas, (physical poses and exercises), breath-work, and meditation designed to support older students in building and maintaining muscle and bone strength; increasing flexibility; improving balance and agility; cultivating mental focus; and supporting peace of heart and mind.
