Traveling in O‘ahu means bringing the travel setup for fishing. Fiblink 9' 4-piece travel rod Penn Spinfisher VI 3500 w/15lb PowerPro braid Gomexus Handle Did some whipping with a 1.5 oz Hammerbomb with a 24" fluorocarbon leader and a 2" Crappie bait curly tail grub. Let’s talk travel rods. Over the last few years I’ve found myself mainly fishing with 4 piece rods. Mostly due to their portability while bike fishing or hiking. The few times I’ve flown with them have been great as I’ve just carried them on the plane instead of having to check them in and pay any “special” item fees. When I’m riding or hiking on the rocks it keeps my hands free for stability so I don’t eat shit. While hiking the streams it helps satisfy the indecisiveness of wanting to be able to fly fish and spin by having one easily packed while making it a breeze to maneuver through trees. They just suite the way I like to enjoy fishing. One rod in particular has become a favorite of mines. The @yamagablanks_official 9’6” MMH Early for Mobile features a wide range (10g-60g) so it sits right in that sweet spot as an ideal whipping rod for Hawaiian anglers. At least for the weights I like to throw. The wide range gives it the ability to switch it up while targeting Moi and still retain its casting ability and tip sensitivity. Compared to my workhorse MC, I can feel a little more backbone to this rod and so far it feels great from the small fish like moi to being able to handle some angry silver bullets. Ok, there’s definitely bigger and angrier O’ios to find, maybe a fat geeeet, but so far this rod gets the job done. Paired with a 3k reel, the over all weight of this rod is a dream to fish all day. I rarely cycle through different set ups, so I’m no expert on comparing all the options out there. But for the time being, the @yamagablanks_official Early for Mobile checks off all the boxes for me in the pack rod category. And for what it’s worth, the best fishing set up out there is the one you’re currently catching fish on. Throwback to this big omilu on dead oama with @uluahuntahz808 @saltwaters_hawaii. Literally slid the oama on the tiniest hook possible and forgot about the pole didn’t even turn my clicker on or put a bell. Next thing i know @uluahuntahz808 goes “who’s pole is that” and as i look over i see my pole bending from the reel! This video was posted on my story and stirred the pot lol. Everytime I’m on the flats I see crabs fleeing sideways with one claw in and they other pointing out. I’ve tested these a few years ago with a stand up type that swims backwards, with no luck. Now that we pour our own jigheads and I know that it’ll fit, I’m gonna test the theory out and hopefully land a Bone on this rigging technique. What do you guys think? Super stoked on my new personal best Omilu Ulua bluefin trevally. I can’t get over the colors on these fish, definitely one of my favorites for sure. This 22 pounder slammed my $10 Amazon popper backed up with Owner split rings and one owner treble hook and one single Bkk hook. I’m always telling my clients as soon as you feel the weight of trevally you gotta set the hook a couple good one then get straight into boosting. We’re fishing shallow water reef ledges with sharp coral, you really gotta give it your all and get these trevally up away from the danger zone. Even holding the reel spool with enough tension to stop the fish but not enough to break the line. Yesterday I was lucky enough to get this amazing fish in for a few pictures a nice release back into the water. Finally had some time to test out some new lures at the Zone. Rigged up our Copper Electric colorway Ika’s to our 1/8oz Jigheads and spotted what I thought was just an average size Oio 5-6lbs. While it made its way from the ledge to the flats, I tossed it about 3 ft in front of it. Twitched the Ika two times, and the Oio Blitzed it and took straight off onto the flats (thank god it didn’t turn for the ledge). While it made its initial run, I knew this wasn’t an average size. Then again I was using a 6’ Scimitar rod (My sons bass rod) so I assumed the rod just couldn’t handle this fish. After 4 runs I finally landed and secured it. Measured out to 28” and weighed in at 9.2lbs my personal best Oio.
