A reception and Guest Artist talk is scheduled for Saturday the 10th of June. thatGuest Artist: Brenda Holtzman Date: June 10th Time: Reception from 4:00 – 6:00 pm with the artist talk at 5:00 pm Brenda is an artist working in the alternative photographic process of Cyanotype Printing. This is a very popular alternative process for artists who begin image printing without ever picking up a camera! This is an early photographic process, used since 1842, and was adopted very early for making blueprints. It is a process that naturally produces blue (Cyan) images and often uses objects placed directly on the chemically coated paper or fabric, which is then exposed to UV or direct sunlight to produce a shadowgram. Brenda will briefly describe the process and describe her work which is on display in our gallery. The images are reflective of the natural beauty around her home in the Hocking Hills. This talk will be of interest to those who follow work in basic photo processes, and to those who love art objects of all types. The images are lovely and created in this very interesting process. Some of the images also include surprising elements. Tonight we feature artist Sue palmer Stone @suepalmerstone 💥 Sue Palmer Stone was born and raised in Connecticut. She graduated from Colby College in Maine in 1984, and moved to New York to work in advertising and marketing. Returning to academia, she earned an M.A. in French from New York University in 1990. After moving back to Connecticut later, and while raising a family, she studied photography at Silvermine Art School. From 2012 to 2021, she participated in Sandi Haber Fifield’s photography workshops in Connecticut and New York City. Stone’s photography often incorporates found objects, sculptural components, and the themes of imperfection, aging and human frailty. In 2022, Stone was among the twenty winners of LensCulture’s Summer Open international competition. She was also awarded the PRC Choice Award for her work in PRC Boston’s Exposure 2022 exhibit, curated by Catherine Edelman. Featured again in LensCulture Magazine, Stone’s work was chosen as one of the “15 Most Popular Discoveries, Interviews and Visual Stories of 2021.” Also in 2021, her photographs were selected by Michael Foley for the New Orleans Photo Alliance Currents exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. In 2019, Kris Graves Projects included her work in On Death, which made Time Magazine’s Best Photobooks of 2019. Tonight we feature artist Anastasiia Kulikalova @si.kulikalova 💥 Anastasiia Kulikalova is a cinematographer from Kyiv, Ukraine. She graduated from Ohio University with an MFA in film and a passion for still-life photography. Anastasiia thinks that objects, like introverts, can tell a fascinating story if you have patience and pay enough attention to details. She believes that the unique tilt & shift of the 4x5 view camera allows to show the perspective and depth that digital cameras can rarely reach. There is an opinion that only tourists look up in New York. I think that all creative and curious people look up to the sky despite their location and occupation. Some admire the skyscrapers, and some are trying to look into the eyes of the Universe. In my photo, I was trying to capture what I see when I tilt my head up: space, humans, the Earth, Nature. Kindness. The Future. However, I believe that any art is beyond the artist's control once it is published. For example, the astronaut in my photo is smiling. I heard the thought that they are smiling because they planted the tree. Another opinion was that they are digging out a baobab, like the Little Prince did on his small planet, to keep the planet clean from the bad plants. Personally, for me emotions matter the most. Tonight we are featuring artist Federica Armstrong 🔥 @federicaarmstrong Federica Armstrong is a visual artist born in Italy and based in Palo Alto, California. Her storytelling practice includes documentary and fine art works focused on environmental and social issues as well as personal narratives related to intimacy and belonging. Her project ‘In Plain Site’, on the toxic heritage of Silicon Valley’s manufacturing era, has been featured on the New York Times Lens Blog and was part of the exhibit ‘Devour the Land’ held at Harvard Art Museum in 2021. During the pandemic year Armstrong has focused on extensive research on alternative processes; that and the sudden death of her mother has led her to the creation of the body of work ‘The Dowry’, an examination of memory, family connections and the role we hold as witness to our past. In Italy the old tradition of the dowry refers to the practice of families giving their daughters linens and other household textiles at the time of marriage. The textiles were often custom made, a symbol of status but also a reminder and a connection to the family of origin. In the project ‘The Dowry’ images from Armstrong’s family photo archive are transferred to vintage textiles through the cyanotype process and further toned using natural dyes such as green tea, giving the images the sepia color of the original prints. Through this alchemy, the fabrics originally used in the course of family life acquire new meaning. Happy #MFAmonday and today we are excited to feature work from first year Sculpture + Expanded Practices, Ray Perez! . “As an Afro-Latino artist, I document our "Post Racial" society to gain a better understanding of myself and my community. Growing up in a white enclave of Cleveland, Ohio, many of my perceptions of blackness were informed by the heteronormative lense of American media. My art is my attempt to come to terms with disharmonious facets of my Afro-Latino male identity. A way to reconcile a certain loss of culture in my family's attempt to assimilate and to blend into the fabric of America. My art draws on socie tal ills in American culture from both the past and present to demonstrate the generational disenfranchisement of black and brown people in the United States through social, economic and political means. . Working simultaneously between video, sculpture, pr int and installation, I am able to examine not only my culture and nature, but that of America as a whole. I utilize appropriated objects and video in conjunction with original works. My name is Lucy Osborne, and I am a first year Painting and Drawing MFA Candidate from Cincinnati, Ohio. I received my B.A. in Art Education and Pre - Art Therapy from Miami (of Ohio) University. As I reflect on the art practices that are my own, I can't help but reflect on the many people that have inspired them today, both familiar figures and strangers alike. My work is largely motivated by people, and I feel a greater responsibility to capture and create an archive of the faces and stories I want to remember. There is a large comfort to me in the stories these faces hold - what they have meant to me, and what they could mean to someone else. My artist voice, however, began to shift when I started teaching. Student relationships changed my world and opened my eyes to the new stories and faces I want to and need to elevate and advocate for, but in a way that is collaborative. Formally known as The Movement Concert, ABCD Moves is an annual concert produced by two student organizations on campus: The Athens Black Contemporary Dancers and The Movement Organization. Performances will occur on Thursday, November 3rd and Friday, November 4th at 7:30 in Putnam Hall’s Shirley Wimmer Dance Theater. Tickets are $8 and $5 for Ohio University students with a student ID. I enjoy playing with this combination of non-reality and concrete reference in 2d and 3d work alike. In painting/drawing this often appears as flourish elements, distortions of form, or abstract exploration based on real world patterns, often from nature/microscopics. In my ceramics, abstract elements can come from discarded scraps (found or my own), glazing choices, or the introduction of non-ceramic elements like thread.
