#MedicalMonday IMPORTANT READ: With the rains many of us are experiencing right now, there is the potential for contaminated standing and floodwaters. Small lakes, ponds, storm drains, and puddles can become breeding grounds for harmful bacteria and parasites for your dog. Giardia is a parasite found and spread through ground and surface water as a result of agricultural runoff, wastewater discharge, and animal feces. Giardia can cause profuse diarrhea, vomiting, gas, and abdominal discomfort. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that is carried by rain and floodwaters. It is spread through the infected urine of animals and thrives in soil and standing water. While water treatment can reduce the likelihood of infection, heavy rains create an elevated risk of contamination. Signs of Leptospirosis include fever, vomiting, refusal to eat, severe weakness, stiffness, muscle pain, and very loose stool with a distinct odor. While we know this all sounds scary, there are preventative measures you can take. Never let your dog drink from lakes, ponds, puddles, storm runoff, or any standing water. Don’t let your dog roll in soil and then lick themselves. Many of these parasites and bacteria can survive for months in both standing water and soil. Talk to your veterinarian about vaccinating your dog against Leptospirosis. While there isn’t a vaccination for Giardia, the important thing here is early detection and getting your dog to the vet immediately for treatment.
