After sitting on top of the highest trees, this Red-shouldered Hawk decided to go closer to the action and realized he was not welcomed into the neighborhood. He was actively harassed by the resident birds, most likely with nests in the vicinity. And both kept charging after the Hawk. The Grackle was closer to his size and went after him more aggressively and the Redwing Blackbird just pestered him. #redshoulderedhawk #nestingseason #redwingblackbird #boattailedgrackle #nestprotectors #nutsaboutbirds #greencaywetlands #greencaynaturecenter #bestoftheusa_nature #bestoftheusa_birds #eye_spy_birds #floridawomenphotographers #worldshares #bestofthesunshinestate_nature

Defender of the Abode 🐤🪺🌿 Ruppell’s Weavers work hard on their nests, cozy hideaways in the trees. But trouble comes when other birds, like clever sparrows, try to steal their homes. The weavers don’t give up though. They become defenders, guarding their nests with all their might. Amidst the flapping and chirping, they stand strong, protecting what they’ve built. It’s nature’s way of showing how important it is to look after what’s yours. #NestProtectors #Nature’sGuardians 🕊️🏠

Join the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s youth program WILD Outside to take action to help protect local turtle populations. WILD Outside will lead the building of turtle nest protectors, games and snacks on Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the rare ECO centre. This free event includes optional busing from the KW Auditorium at 9:15 a.m. and returning at 1:30 p.m. Turtle nests are prime targets for predators. You can keep dozens of turtles safe by joining us to build wooden protectors over their nests. No experience necessary! You will also have the chance to learn about at-risk turtle species in Southern Ontario and how you can help nature with the WILD Outside program. This event is for youth ages 15 to 18 years old only. Make sure to sign up using the link in our bio. Read more about WILD Outside at WILDOutside.ca. This photo of the Oriental Pied Hornbill chick was captured by our nest protector Budhiram Tai, after a 90-day nesting journey. From February to July-August, our team of 11 dedicated nest protectors watches over hornbill nests in the neighbouring forests of the Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh. They play a crucial role in protecting these magnificent birds. However, most of these nest protectors, including Budhiram, rely on only a few cameras which are used in rotation between members, limiting their ability to capture precious moments like this.. Can you help? We are seeking donations of old or pre-loved cameras to assist the nest protectors. Every lens counts! Imagine the possibilities: - More stunning photos and videos of hornbill life, raising awareness and inspiring awe. - Enhanced monitoring with clear evidence of successes and possible threats. - Empowered protectors who can share their passion and knowledge with the world. Let's give these guardians of the hornbills a medium to share their field experiences with everyone else! Please donate a camera today or help spread the word. Get in touch with us over DM Or send an email to [email protected]. #NestProtectors #SaveHornbills #CameraDonation #ArunachalPradesh #Wildlife

We've been busy this week. Protecting nests, sitting with mamaTurtles until they go back to water. Not much time for social media. We want to share the new look of our protectors. Amyris collaborated with Darci (@redfirefae) in creating stencils to label the nest protectors. We had a lot of trouble with tags last year, and they are made of plastics. We hope painting them will be a more sustainable option. Do you like it? I found a protector that was stepped on but also staples were removed on one side. If you see anyone tampering with our protectors, please call us and let us know so that we can fix it. Stay tuned for most posts! #nestprotectors #turtleprotection #protectturtles #volunteerwork

WO Kitchener-Waterloo tested their handy skills while building turtle nest protectors with Rare Charitable Research Reserve (@rare_sites)! 🔨🐢 Unfortunately, only a small percentage of turtle eggs 🥚 survive to maturity. The nest protectors help prevent predation of the nest, increasing likelihood of survival. Check out all the nest protectors the youth built — they definitely added some handy new skills to their tool belt! 😎 • @cwf_fcf @leaderstoday 🏷 #WILDOutside #WILDOutsideKitchenerWaterloo #WOKitchenerWaterloo #WILDOutsideKW #WOKW #CanadaServiceCorps #LeadersToday #DoMoreForWildlife #YouthInConservation #ActiveLearning #TurtlesOfOntario #TurtleConservation #HelpTheTurtles #NestProtectors

WO Ottawa built 5 nest protectors with @cwf_fcf’s turtle team! 🐢 After spending the day learning about turtles from CWF’s Freshwater Specialist, David Seburn, we got a chance to build nest protectors out of pre-cut wood 🪵 and wire meshing using tape measures 📏, hammers 🔨, nails 🔩, and wire cutters. We also got a chance to ask questions and see a bunch of turtle models! After building the protectors, we took a break in the sunshine 🌞 and everyone drew wildlife doodles on the entrance of the CWF office with chalk. 🎨 To end off the day, we played active games including capture the flag and octopus. What a turtley awesome event! • @cwf_fcf @leaderstoday 🏷 #WILDOutside #WILDOutsideOttawa #WOOttawa #CanadaServiceCorps #LeadersToday #DoMoreForWildlife #YouthInConservation #ActiveLearning #Turtles #NestProtectors #SaveTheTurtles #HelpTheTurtles #OntarioTurtles #NestingSeason

🌲Nature news🌲 Turtles are nesting throughout SE Michigan. Their eggs are vulnerable to predation by hungry raccoons and nesting sites are disappearing due to development. You can help turtles by installing a nest protector. WE HAVE THE GREATEST VOLUNTEERS 🥺💚 Achilles attended our volunteer orientation session last night and was thrown straight into action this morning (less than 24 hours)! 🤯 A nesting turtle was spotted. Achilles monitored the nesting mom (photo 2), ensured she returned to her wetland safely (photo 3), and placed a nest protector down (photo 1)! 🥚🐢 Can we get a round of applause for our #TurtleTrooper? 👏👏👏

It's turtle hatchling time and you might be wondering why we protect turtle nests. Well, the unfortunate fact is that less than 1% of turtle eggs will survive to maturity. This is a result of several factors including habitat loss and predation. Unfortunately turtles that share their habitats with humans experience higher predation rates since human activity can increase predator numbers (such as raccoons). Thus, when turtles nest near humans we can lend a hand to counter act the negative impact we've already had by protecting turtle nests. Beyond helping to protect their nest, the hatchlings will not need any more help. They will easily be able to dig their way out and find their way to the closest water, where they will start their lives. If the hatchlings do not emerge in late summer / early autumn do not worry! They may be painted or map turtle hatchlings which will occasionally overwinter in the nests and emerge in the spring. #turtles #turtlehatchlings #babyturtle #conservation #nestprotectors #predation #helptheturtles

Did you know that altering or digging up a turtle nest is illegal? And that holding a native turtle captive is also illegal? At Turtles Kingston we encourage you, the community, to take action to protect turtles by installing nest protectors. This does not alter the nest but instead places a protective barrier around the nest to discourage and prevent predation. This is key to turtle survival as less than 1% of turtle eggs survive to maturity primarily as a result of predation. Once you’ve installed a nest protector there is not much more to do. It will take 60-90 days for the eggs to hatch. The hatchlings will not need your help but appreciate you leaving the nest protector on until they emerge. Once they hatch, the hatchlings will easily be able to dig their way out and find their way to the closest water, where they will start their lives. The occasion when they may need your help is to cross roads, tails, paths, and other human barriers. If the hatchlings do not emerge in late summer / early autumn do not worry! They may be painted or map turtle hatchlings which will occasionally overwinter in the nests and emerge in the spring. For any overwintering hatchlings you must remove nest protectors that are on public property before the winter. #turtles #turtlelover #turlteseason #didyouknow #frequentlyaskedquestions #nestprotectors #whatcanyoudo

This year’s nesting season has come to an end and the HLTTs are happy to announce, with the help and dedication from our volunteers, we placed 73 nesting boxes! These nesting boxes protect the eggs from predators. Each box has 4 exit holes to help guide the hatchlings to the pond safely and mesh on top to allow as much sunlight as possible. Ontario hatchlings have a less than 2% chance of surviving to adulthood. We are hopeful these nest protectors will give the hatchlings their greatest chance of survival! #savetheturtles #nestprotectors #ontarioturtles
