As promised, I’d post some of my favourite music stores from my recent trip to NYC. Here it goes. 🎸 1. Music Inn World Instruments (@the.music.inn) This one is a piece of history. Whether you’re looking for obscure and dusty records, a brand new sitar, African percussion instruments or a regular acoustic, this store has it all. It’s said to be one of Bob Dylan’s favourite music stores to this day. If you get a chance, speak to the owner. He’s got the craziest background story - from meeting George Harrison to staying at Chuck Berry’s house and opening for Sly and the Family Stone. Incredible. Tip: don’t miss out on the weekly open mic sessions. 2. Carmine Street Guitars (@carminestreetguitars) Just like the previous one, this is another one of Bob Dylan’s favourites. Here you’ll find the most incredible hand-crafted guitars, as well as one of the best luthiers around. Fun fact: every guitar here is built from reclaimed lumber - the same wood from which all 1800’s New York City buildings are built. 3. Rudy’s Music (@rudysmusic) Man, this one is incredible. Located in SoHo, you can feel the passion for music throughout the store. From vintage Fenders to the most exclusive Martins, this beautiful store has it all and lets you try it out. From our newly issued Catalog 80: ARCHIVE OF NINE PHOTOS FROM THE MUSIC INN, CA. 1950s. Collection of nine vintage oversize photographs taken at the Music Inn of Stockbridge, Massachusetts in the 1950s. Each photograph SIGNED by photographer Clemens Kalischer on the verso. Included are stunning photographs of Max Roach, Ornette Coleman, Mahalia Jackson, Count Basie, Gunther Schuller, Dave Brubeck, Chuck Israels, Mona Neves, and Ran Blake. Founded in 1950 by Stephanie and Philip Barber, the venue was created as a center for the performance and study of jazz. While greeted with lukewarm enthusiasm by the local townspeople, the invitation-only space quickly gained popularity among both white and Black poets, musicians, and artists. Participants could watch jazz and blues performances, stay the night, and discuss the performances the next morning. Luminaries such as Langston Hughes, Mahalia Jackson, John Lee Hooker, Leon James, Al Minns, and John Mohegan were counted among the attendees of the venue's regular roundtable discussions. The Barbers decided to open the concerts to the outside world in the mid-1950s, and converted a courtyard on the property into a formal performance space, known as the Berkshire Music Barn. The Barn hosted a concert series that featured a who's who of jazz and blues musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, and Jimmy Giuffre. By 1957, the Barn's success prompted the Barbers to open a "jazz school," where professionals such as Gillespie and Giuffre trained a new generation of jazz musicians. The venue changed ownership at the end of the 1950s, shifting focus from jazz to folk music, and changed hands for a third time in 1969. Under the third owner, the space hosted rock performances, with additional buildings on the property set to use as bars, a movie theatre, an art gallery, head and music shops, and a hotel. Increasingly raucous live performances would lead townspeople and neighbors to issue complaints, injunctions, and lawsuits, and the Inn would close in 1979. Poets, folk-singers, socialists, comedians, and more gather for a free exchange of ideas, expression, and maybe a few Jazz cigarettes. Though "hootenanny" is an antiquated term, it's still used to describe this open mic night that has been held in the Music Inn's basement since 1953. It's steps away from Bob Dylan's former apartment, where he wrote "The Freewheeling Bob Dylan," and sits in the shadow of Washington Square Park. It's a home-group for artists of all disciplines, but especially for folk music. During the week, the Music Inn operates as a world music store and record shop. But on Thursday nights at 8:00 PM, the basement transforms into a temple of Dionysus . We clear the room, replace the drums with folding chairs, dim the lights, and let the magic happen. It's a judgment-free zone where I've been able to perform, develop, and workshop new material for my upcoming album. The Music Inn has become a musical home-group for me, and I'm grateful for the Greenwich Village hootenanny. If you're in New York City on a Thursday night, stop by West 4th Street and Sixth Avenue. Went out record shopping on Friday with my bestie Jason, both Academy and Human Head were fantastic; Material World and Brooklyn Record Exchange were kind of meh. I was shocked to find a number of records that were solid big time wants in the wild including this album by Sonny Rollins and Teddy Charles at Academy Records in Brooklyn, which I had been looking for since seeing it posted by somebody. MetroJazz was a jazz subsidiary of MGM active from late 1958 to mid 1960, and about half their catalog are on my list.
