This family brought their hearts, their heritage, and their hopes to this BEAUTIFUL Jewish wedding! Their Rabbi made their ceremony the perfect blend of humor, sincerity, and reverence. The family and wedding party came down the aisle to "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful" world, with the groom walking half-way down the aisle before being joined by his parents at the chuppah. The bride did the same with her parents, walking down to the ethereal "Erev Shel Shoshanim" and circling her groom 7 times, which symbolizes the bride creating a boundary of intimacy and home-building around their union. For their recessional, the couple left to the up-beat "Siman Tov," and then the rest of the guests walked out to "All you need is love" by The Beatles! As always, it was such a joy to play alongside @florys_music! She is such a talented violinist, with professional poise and adaptability, and making music with her always makes the time fly by! (After the performance, we opened the doors of the synagogue to discover that a full thunderstorm had developed! We both ran, shrieking and laughing, as we quickly shuttled our instruments through pouring sheets of rain to our cars! What can we say - all artists are all children at heart). I created a playlist that blended traditional hymns, fun Celtic jigs and reels, elegant classical selections, and peaceful neo-classical contemporary works for harp. (Along with a couple filmscore selections for the kiddos!). A special thanks to a rabbit-eared young gentleman who anticipated every door I might need opened during arrival/departure, and who eagerly "bounced" across the room to help me do soundchecks with my amplifier before the performance! One of my favorite parts was how many parents brought their young infants up to gaze at the harp, and the ~ 4-7yo's who very carefully and politely said, "Thank you, I enjoyed the music!" upon coaching from their proud parents. (I answered them with due solemnity and thanked them for being nice enough to take the time to tell me!). As always, my heart is also warmed when older adults came to me after the performance, telling me how certain tunes brought back the nostalgia of fond memories. And, of course, thanks to all the professional wait staff/servers who are the unsung heroes of every event: it makes me feel so humble and grateful whenever they take the time to say how much they enjoyed my music, themselves. They work so hard! I only wish the adorable Easter Bunny, who was dancing around the room in time to my music and handing out goodies to adults and youngsters alike, was able to stay to get a photo with me! The mood of the room was anything but colorless, though: from the groom's eyes welling with tears and his voice trembling when he read his bride his handwritten vows, to their guests' laughter and effusive best-wishes when members of their the bridal party interviewed them during the cocktail hour to make a living Wedding Guest Book, their day was infused with brightness and colored with nostalgia and hope. Granted that's my own opinion, but coming out onto SC4's music theater stage and striding towards my lovely Salvi gold Iris amidst audience opening applause, there was definitely a rush of excitement and pride that this instrument and I would shortly get to show off what we can do together. A HUGE thank you to #followsc4 for sponsoring me to play two "St Patrick's Day"-themed recitals this past Thursday! Celtic music is one of my personal favorite genres, and I had a fantastic time assembling and performing a 90-minute collection of some of my favorite Irish & Gaelic tunes! I also got to talk about #christinatourin, whose Celtic-themed "White Rose" album so entranced childhood-me that the future formed in that moment. My contacts at SC4 were a huge part of setting up the performancss for success and ease, right down to making sure I could park immediately outside the performance hall doors, and making sure I was secure and comfortable between performances. Afterward, so many audience members came up to gaze at my harp, and they asked a bunch of really great questions! For example: is the column solid gold? What can you tell me about this instrument? How many pounds of pressure is on it? (No, it's metal rods etc in a maple tube, which is prepared with gesso, covered with tinted clay bole, gilded with 23c gold, and lacquered. It's still pretty fragile, though, so the gold shouldn't be touched or treated roughly). (This instrument was in the Italian showroom for several years, before coming to LA, and eventually my home. I adore its warm, rich, even sound. In 2006, Salvi Harps had the honor of presenting a harp made specifically to the Prince of Wales' for the Royal Harpist). (Pedal harps have about 2,000 pounds of pressure from the strings). Www.TheMichiganHarpist.com Www.youtube.com/@themichiganharpist *** As Performance Season 2024 begins to pick up speed, it was an honor to have this weekend's performance be for PACE of Huron Valley as they celebrated a decade of excellence and existence! The theme for this open house gala was "10 Shades of Purple," and I dressed to match! The plan was to have my performance area designated as a "low intensity/relaxation" zone in a quiet dining area. I was joined by sound bowl musician Rob, who was stationed in the glass atrium beyond. During this three hour performance, we both collaborated in our separate areas, and together created an ambiance of happy, warm peace during the rainstorm of this chilly spring day. At the end of the performance, staff members came and listened in for a spur-of-the-moment grand finale of special requests! The fabulous Doug Stewart, flutist, and I had the joy of playing once again for the residents of Cedarbrook of Rochester for their holiday party. Doug and I had instant camaraderie since 2016. I began a pre-ensemble rehearsal warm-up with Handel's "Concerto in B-flat" and Doug started echoing the melody BY EAR across the room. 😅😅 I stopped, startled, and he gave me the world's cheekiest grin. Every time we make music, there is a meeting of minds and musical intent that needs no words to execute. Doug's vibrant array of tones, textures, and exceptional improvisatory skills on flute are a perfect compliment to the shimmering, warm tones of the harp. Want to hear what I mean? When I concluded peaceful, contemplative pre-service music on harp, a local pastor gave a wonderful service on the importance of acknowledging whatever griefs, bittersweet memories, or loss we might be feeling in this holiday season. Likening the hearts of the listeners to Superman, he set the perspective that even Clark Kent wore glasses and was shy & awkward around his crush! Similarly, we needn't try to be "Superman" every day and be perfect; the balm of support from our loved ones, the balm of time to re-emphasize the sweetness of memories, and taking moments to be real and authentic will all work together to transform sadness into joy. The life enrichment coordinator and I have worked together for many years for various holiday parties; for this Rochester location, we decided to position my amplifier out towards the dining room so the residents could enjoy the music during dinner without competing for space in the cozy space. After dinner, residents congregated in the living room around the harp and enjoyed an "up close and personal" experience with the harp! Towards the end, a past-navy vocalist, who had been booked to perform later on in a different part of the campus, snuck in. We performed a few impromptu duets, including "Silent Night" and "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas!" The first half is a fun, jubilant recreation of a medieval Christmas, full of pageantry, laughter, and old carols polished to familiarity through the hundreds of years. The second half is a tender, intimate, and fresh take on the Navity Story, including a song portraying beseeching panic into peace from Mary at the Annunciation, a hauntingly sweet description of Joseph's decision to stay with her through faith and courage, several ethereal children's choir pieces - with harp solos from yours truly!!! - and a magnificent conclusion with an all-cast rendition of "O Come All Ye Faithful" with the audience joining in song. ANDDDDDDD, for the first time, musicians were allowed to dress up as period-appropriate musicians. HUZZAH! This is my third time performing this masterpiece musical - 2015, 2018, and now 2023! I was able to arrive extra early for this performance so the bride and groom could take some professional photos with my instrument before hiding away for the Grand Entrance. I had extra time after finishing setting up to take photos myself of some of these gorgeous details of the rest of their hall! Professional photographer @Bravo_studios was kind enough to snap some quick photos of me on my humble camera phone and grab a quick video of the performance on his phone. However, nothing prepared me for the magnificence of what he could do with his proper photography equipment! He very generously shared this photo he took behind the camera, and WOW! The luminosity! The glowing textures and reflections!!!! 😍😮📸 Thank you so much, Alex! I LOVE it! As always, it is a pleasure to work with @dj.dani.official to create the perfect aural atmosphere for fine events. Between the stunning richness of my #Salvi harp and his sleek, powerful amplification setup, we coordinated a visually neat performance area for me while providing the guests with a pristine replication of the harp's tone throughout the hall. This enthusiastic bride not only selected each song she wanted played during her guest arrival, but also crafted the ORDER in which she believed best flowed into the rest of the evening. I assured her that I'd do my best to have "Marry You" by Bruno Mars played as the last song of the evening; within a single minute of the projected end time, I plucked the final string, and @dj.dani.official announced that the Bride and Groom would soon begin their Grand Entrance. I was the only musician for their day, and the bridal couple picked out a wealth of music (including Arabic love songs, filmscore, and contemporary radio hits) from my repertoire while giving me complete artistic choice to select lovely classical works to highlight the brilliance of the harp. From a dreamy, magical Grand Entrance of "Tale as Old as Time" from Beauty and the Beast to Lana Del Ray, it was a gorgeous soundscape. A special shout-out to their day-of contact and the serving staff! I had arrived pre-fed for the performance, but they insisted that I not leave without SEVERAL to-go boxes of dinner and dessert. It was my first time having Knafeh (a Middle Eastern sweet cheese dessert, composed of kataifi dough and akawi cheese - which is like mozarella - which is then baked, soaked in scented sugar syrup, and served warm with a crushed pistachio topping). They had me at "cheese," and won my tastebuds and heart at first bite! Also requested were Chinese folk songs to honor the Groom's heritage, fun Celtic gems, and some of their personal Golden Oldies and modern romantic radio hits. Alas, Michigan weather refused to clear up for her ceremony on this nippy afternoon; we all pivoted to have her ceremony indoors. The room glowed with candles and white roses while the officient - who was none other than the bride's father! - formally joined their futures together. I had the honor of playing during guest arrival for the International Women's Forum! These two performances totaled over 7 hours of music - without any repeats in my repertoire! It was definitely an endurance-run, but I LOVED getting to play through so many fun selections! I chose to bring out international/cultural pieces to celebrate the global collaboration of the attendees- with music from/inspired by France, Italy, Spain, Lebanon, Egypt, China, Japan, Israel, Greece, and of course, American classics + Motown hits! I also included music from filmscores associated with strong, independent women - including a couple of my own favorite Disney movies.
