Colorado 🦃 Trip ‘24 This trip was unbelievable and more than any one of us could have asked for! Hunting turkeys in the mountains with some of your best friends and making lifetime memories is what it’s all about! We experience some things none of us have ever experienced before like having a momma bear and cub come literally running in to within 20 yards of us before we spooked them off. Talk about a oh poop moment haha 3 of the 4 of us were fortunate enough to fill our tags! I harvested an absolute beast of a true mountain Merriam’s turkey I didn’t get a weight, but the spurs were both 1” with a 9.25” beard on him! A beautiful Merriams subspecies wild turkey Tom coming into the call. You notice how he’s tilting his tail fan to the left hand side of my photo, ignoring another turkey that’s on the right side of the frame? That’s because my hen decoy was just out of the left frame of the photo, and he was wanting to maximize how much of his tail fan she could see by tilting it toward her. When you’re hunting, sometimes you can tell where a hidden hen is (which is why he may be hung up), if a gobbler is tilting his fan one way or the other that is not straight on when he’s coming into your calls. These gobblers sometimes remind me of those people hired to dress up in ridiculous costumes on street corners to dance and spin around their sign to bring attention to the tax business or restaurant they’re trying to get you to go to. South dakota...... a redemption state for me. It was a fun few days there. Site seeing and a 1.5 days of hunting. We had a few misses which in return played a huge part in overall success. However this wasn't measured in the amount of kills. We met some amazing ranchers and got to explore a lot of terrain. My Dad and I managed to shoot a double for the first time in our life after sleeping in hammocks on a mountain top, saw elk in the hundreds, and managed to get 1 more turkey the next weekend to close out my season. #merriams

It was very odd for this Wild Turkey Photographer, who lives only a few miles from Mexico at the bottom tip of South Texas (where it seldom, if ever snows) to photograph a Merriam’s subspecies Wild Turkey Gobbler at full strut in snow in the month of May in the Rocky Mountains. I know it may be a normal event for you, but for me, it was odd. Very odd. I’m used to photographing turkeys near my home when it’s in the 90’s and low 100’s, in fields of wildflowers, watching every step for rattlesnakes and shed antlers. “Sloppy Seconds!” Two big, fat, blimps of Merriam’s subspecies Wild Turkey Strutters push against each other, like Sumu Wrestlers, as they compete for a DSD hen decoy in a greenfield in Colorado. These two didn’t mind they were getting “sloppy seconds”, as earlier that morning, I had four Jakes come into this hen decoy, and for over an hour, they tried to fornicate with her, and spun her around in a circle, while pecking her head, until all the grass beneath her was beat down to a dirt donut around her. Easterns aren’t my bread and butter, so when I harvested this Michigan swamp-dwelling longbeard, I was quick to notice and appreciate all of the subtle differences from my usual flavor of turkey. One of my favorites was the copper and bronze tones as opposed to the blues and greens of the birds here at home. I’ll never forget staring at every detail of this bird, and I know that somehow the next one will be a little different, and unique in his own way. Thank God for turkey hunting.
