Jane Havis is a graphic designer by day who has returned to painting over the last few years. She loves being outside whenever possible, gathering inspiration wherever she goes. She uses acrylic paint to create small landscape paintings from a slightly shifted perspective, often with a high horizon line to concentrate on the land, its colours, light and textures. She wants her images to draw you in and capture a moment that includes the effects of the weather and the seasons around us in a unique way. gregkentartinwood: Greg collects wood from tree surgeons which would have become firewood. The wood is turned to a thickness of 2mm and sandblasted. This has the effect of removing the soft spring growth leaving a lace effect. This can only be done with oak which has medullary rays that go across the grain. This combines woodturning and sculpting. What is produced is fine art created by nature and revealed by a craftsman. Sarah has always struggled with anything that takes time, so works small or in parts. Working in this way means she can go to and fro without the fear of not being able to complete something or getting bored half way through. Most of Sarah's work is based around pattern and order to try and make sense of the muddle that is often real life. With pattern comes harmony. She looks for patterns in everything and the majority of her work is built up around this premise. Sarah creates mini pieces which are then collated together to create something which is more than the sum of its parts. Kellyanne Thorne draws inspiration from the natural world finding beauty in everything from pebbles on a beach to the grace of animals and birds. Michael Alan-Kidd calls his current style of painting ‘surrationalism’. It’s a development of conventional surrealism. But, unlike conventional surrealism, which was an attempt to depict dreams and express the subconscious and the irrational, surrationalism is a conscious and purposeful use of surreal imagery to portray commonplace human dilemmas: poverty, homelessness, loneliness and addiction. Michael has always considered the attachment of surrealism to dreams and the subconscious to be a fundamental weakness, which often led to the portrayal of what he calls ‘puzzles without an answer’. Like the celebrated surrealists Miro, de Chirico and Dali himself, Michael creates sharply defined edges and contours – often with their shadows – for each element in his paintings, which reinforces their reality. Ieuan Edwards (The Black Gold Press) is a fine art linocut printmaker and illustrator. His multi-layered prints are made using the reduction method, whereby portions of a single block of lino are carved away between printing each successive layer of colour. His prints are produced by hand with a glass baren to create the printed impression, rather than using a mechanical press. He enjoys the physicality of this approach, which he sees as an extension of the labour associated with the drawing, inking and carving stages. Amanda Randall makes abstract stone sculptures inspired by plants and fungi. Carving by hand with traditional mallets and chisels, she works mainly with British limestones. The sensual spirals and intersecting, curved planes of her work celebrate the fertility and resilience of nature, while acknowledging its fragility. Organic surface textures reference seed cases, shells, insects and fossils. Each summer Amanda attends a stone carving festival on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, where the landscape itself is like a sculpture.
