Miles on Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/martin-m-miles/7815545074/in/dateposted/ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Compared to the robust sculptural techniques of the Master of Cabestany, this scrawny dual-finned mermaid seems more like a whimsical doodle. Her hands seem to be physically suppressing her fish tails, rather than simply holding them: a sure sign of her intent to deceive you. But her fishy eyes give her away in a glance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Refs: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Laura Bartolomé, “The Master of the Tympanum of Cabestany. The Master of Cabestany, Marble Capital from the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, Peralada Castle Museum, Catalonia Public Domain License location: https://ca.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitxer:MestreCabestany-StPereRodes-2532.jpg ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This material is in the public domain in the United States and other countries where copyright extends for 70 years (or less) after the author's death. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Author: Amadalvarez https://ca.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuari:Amadalvarez Location: Museu del Castell de Peralada http://www.museucastellperalada.com/en/home/more-info/ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When the monastery was abandoned at the end of the 18th century, the conservation of this site became extremely friable. Documentary evidence shows that the abbot of Sant Pere actually granted permission to remove stone and debris from the building for general building material to be reused elsewhere. However, he explicitly excluded the marbles of the church's main portal. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Master of Cabestany's sculptures began to be highly prized for their value. Ironically, this appreciation led to the almost complete dismantling of the tympanum by 1832, and is the reason why various pieces by the Master ended up in such a variety of museums. (See Bartolomé, “The Master of the Tympanum of Cabestany”, 2017.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Master of Cabestany’s art is characterised by triangular human faces with crushed chins and high, deeply carved ears, almond-shaped eyes with trepanning holes drilled at either end, exaggerated hands with long and tapering fingers, and drapery with many folds. In the photo of the piece above trepanning can be observed particularly in the left eye of the left lion. To me the “puffy” treatment around the mouths and eyebrows of the Peralada lions is reminiscent of some of the renderings in chestnut and cypress wood of human and of bronze lion temple guardians of the Kamakura period (1185-1333) in Japan. An impossible connection!

Capital of the Virgin and Christ Child (alternate angle), showing a second Vegetal Capital, 12th Century Upper Cloister, Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, North East Catalonia ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ⓒ Peter Callas 2022 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mary, already crowned, holds the baby Jesus on her knees, while Joseph (?) to one side, with a greatly oversized hand, strikes a contemplative pose, predictive of their imminent flight to Egypt. A guardian Angel (?) stands nearby with his back to the family. Note the use of the stone-driller, what is typical for the carvings of the Roussillon of that time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The (partly unfinished) capitals of the eastern wing of the Upper Cloister do not appear to be the work of the Master of Cabestany. Immaculada Lorés comments: “Stylistically they are characterised by an interest in the detail and sharpness of the shapes, not lacking in rusticity.” (see Immaculada Lorés, L’escultura de Sant Pere de Rodes, 1990.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Upper Cloister, which was part of a significant expansion of the monastery in the twelfth century, has been entirely restored. Almost nothing of the original remains because the capitals and columns were looted. Even the gallery walls were dismantled. Two reconstruction campaigns were carried out in the 20th century in an attempt to imitate what was known of the original construction. The south and east sides were rebuilt in 1973 with reclaimed materials, while the two remaining galleries were rebuilt in 1997 using new materials. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A primitive 11th century lower cloister was rediscovered during the excavations of 1989. There were four porticoed galleries around a trapezoidal courtyard. The splendorous affluence the monastery had achieved as an important pilgrimage destination for the relics of Saint Peter made this cloister inadequate and it was decided to replace it by the turn of the 12th century. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The topography made it difficult to expand the space, so it was decided to bury the first cloister so that a new one could be built above it. The west gallery was destroyed centuries later to form a cistern, while the east gallery retains the original barrel vault.

Agnus Dei (The Lamb of God), Cast of a 12th century Bas-Relief, Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, North East Catalonia ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ⓒ Peter Callas 2022 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This sculpture of the Lamb which holds the cross of Christ is presumed to be the keystone to the main archivolt of the entrance portal of Sant Pere de Rodes. It is a moulding of the original marble by the Master of Cabestany preserved in the museum Frédéric Marès in Barcelona. The lamb’s wool has been rendered as an extraordinary series of spirals. See previous post for more info on the anonymous sculptor known as the “Master of Cabestany” since the 1930s. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Biblical reference is from John 1:29: “…All this happened at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’” John’s turn of phrase has been generally understood as referring to the prophetic language of Jeremiah 11:19 (“… I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter”), and Isaiah 53:7 (… “He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.”). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Refs: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Lombard Romanesque of Catalonia https://arsartisticadventureofmankind.wordpress.com/tag/virgin-of-the-cloister-of-solsona/ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Master of Cabestany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Cabestany ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monestir_de_Sant_Pere_de_Rodes ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes: Visit and History, JAAC, 2020 https://saltaconmigo.com/blog/2020/08/monasterio-de-sant-pere-de-rodes/ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #catalonia #santperederodes #total_catalonia #igerscatalunya #portal #photography #australianartist #petercallasromanesque #stonemason #medieval #artemedieval #medievalart #romanesque #12thcentury #cloister #CatalanRomanesque #MasterofCabestany #agnusdei

The Master of Cabestany, Details of the Apparition of Christ to the Apostles, Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, North East Catalonia ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ⓒ Peter Callas 2022 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One the greatest anonymous artists active during the 12th century produced work for Sant Pere de Rodes. Known as the “Master of Cabestany” through of the rediscovered tympanum he carved for the church of the village of Cabestany in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of France, this master mason also carved the bas-reliefs for the western facade of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, only fragments of which are now housed in the Frederic Marès Museum in Barcelona. The rest of the sculptures have been completely looted. Only two white marble ashlars decorated with vegetable friezes and another small relief are preserved in situ. 121 sculptures have been attributed to the Master and his studio overall from as far afield as Aude, Navarre, and Tuscany. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Master of Cabestany’s art is characterised by triangular human faces with crushed chins and high, deeply carved ears, almond-shaped eyes with trepanning holes at either end, exaggerated hands with long and tapering fingers, and drapery with many folds. In the Apparition of Christ to the Apostles, the evocative echoes of the various hand gestures visually harmonise the composition, while the folds in Christ’s robe mimic the waves teeming with fish beneath the vessel which carries the Apostles. The casts are accurately made with “cast stone” which reproduce the same grain and colour as seen in the originals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Refs: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Lombard Romanesque of Catalonia https://arsartisticadventureofmankind.wordpress.com/tag/virgin-of-the-cloister-of-solsona/ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Master of Cabestany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Cabestany ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monestir_de_Sant_Pere_de_Rodes ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes: Visit and History, JAAC, 2020 https://saltaconmigo.com/blog/2020/08/monasterio-de-sant-pere-de-rodes/

Detail of the altar frontal of Saint-Sernin, c. 1180. This wonderful relief, made in white marble, is one of the best and remarkable pieces of the Mestre de Cabestany -a name given by the Catalan historian Josep Gudiol in 1944- an anonymous sculptor active in late 12th century. He and its workshop worked in Lenguadoc (Aude) and Catalunya (Rosselló and Girona), but in Toscana and Navarra as well. His style and iconography are particular. Definitely he's one of my favourite and fascinating artists/workshops of the Middle Age. #saintsernin #sainthilaire #abbayesainthilaire #mestredecabestany #masterofcabestany #sculptor #artist #medievalart #medievaltimes #sculpture #marble #stonecarving #relief #art #artroman #romanesque #romanesqueart #romànic #romanic #romanik #romanico #aude #languedoc #arteveryday #arteverywhere #frontalaltar #beautifulplace #medievalsculpture #payscathare #occitanie
