However, from now until the end of the year, I am able to approve and book a wide variety a flight requests in support of our military / veterans through our “No Service Member Spends the Holidays Alone” campaign. The Heroes Walk to Fly event was a heartwarming success, uniting Luke's Wings supporters and beneficiaries in a 1.5-mile walk and Block Party at the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. The day started with breakfast, warm-ups, and a vibrant walk through downtown Bethesda with American flags, raising awareness along the way. The festivities continued at the finish line with a lively Block Party, offering food, drinks, and the chance to connect with the inspiring families. In April of 2017, Airman First Class Karlene D. was diagnosed with lymphoma and was immediately sent to San Antonio Military Medical Center to begin aggressive chemotherapy and radiation and to receive multiple stem cell transplants. U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Alvaro B. has a loving wife and two beautiful children. But due to injuries he sustained during service in 2017, Alvaro was geographically separated from his family. This was necessary to ensure the kids could continue schooling and remain in their daily activities while their dad received proper treatment. This meant that Alvaro’s wife, Tammy, flew back and forth between Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and their home every time. When Alvaro was to be fitted for a prosthetic limb, Luke’s Wings provided a flight for Tammy to bring over the children and for all three of them to return to the Washington, D.C. area to see their hero walk for the first time, and spend time together as a family. Miguel enlisted in the Army Reserves in 2013, and while he was deployed in Kuwait during training, his back hyperextended. He was later placed in Walter Reed for treatment, and after multiple surgeries, he still experiences chronic pain. Miguel heard about Luke’s Wings and reached out in 2017 seeking for his daughters to come to visit him in Texas. Based on a commitment to ensure every wounded soldier is reunited with their family, Luke’s Wings has continued to ensure that Miguel’s daughters’ are able to fly every year during Summer and Christmas to see him. Sergeant Jaylen enlisted in the Marines nine years ago; during physical training in 2015, he suffered a torn RCL and UCL, joint displacement, and 14 metacarpal bone displacements. With multiple surgeries to treat his injuries, his road to recovery has been difficult. Christopher S. has 20 years of service under his belt, within which he served as a Sergeant with a promotion to Special Operations Division's Mounted Unit for 11 years. Before he joined the Mounted Unit, he was assigned to the New York City Housing Projects as a PCO unit. And then he found himself in the middle of the 9/11 attack. Scully spent the next four days digging out his colleagues and civilians, many of whom were later found dead. It was a horrifying experience that left him with years of guilt and tough memories. Watching his old-time colleagues from the incident get diagnosed with cancer made it all worse. Life progressed and it seemed as though everyone has forgotten. But Luke’s Wings didn’t forget our heroes. A colleague recommended Luke’s Wings to Scully shortly after he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Cancer of the GI. Colton B. has been in active service for 15 years and is currently with Army National Guard. He got injured during deployment in Poland and was medevaced out of the country 3 days after. After surgery at Walter-reed, there were complications, so Colton needed his mom to come out and help him for about a week. Someone told Colton about Luke's Wings. He reached out and a flight was booked for his mom to go be with him. It was a one-way ticket because Colton wasn’t sure of how long he would be needing his mom by his side. But what blew him away was when he called back to see if he could get another flight booked for his mom to go back to work, Luke’s Wings got it done in an instant! Sergeant Major Gerald (Jerry) D. served in the California Army National Guard for over twenty-seven years and retired in June 2022. During a medical TDY, he was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma for a second time. His left kidney was removed and was sent for treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Since then, his cancer has worsened, now has stage four cancer and he is receiving monthly treatment in Bethesda. But Luke's Wings made miracles happen by making sure Jerry’s family was close to him. Jerry believes that the support from Luke's Wings has been immensely uplifting and inspirational in a time when he was struggling. Sgt. MSgt Scott "Jeff" C., a flight engineer, had a terrible accident during an inflight combat training back in 2018. The accident left his two feet shattered, which somehow led to multiple infections. After about 6 surgeries, Jeff started healing, but then COVID struck and shut everything down. Jeff fought later many infections and went in and out of the hospital for many months after. After several surgeries, both feet were amputated and he got prosthetic feet. But Jeff was a fighter; he did not only recover but took up the challenge to participate in the Army 10 miler in Washington DC. Luke's Wings made sure Jeff’s family joined him in DC. Luke's Wings flew the whole Caroon family back to Minnesota to celebrate an early Thanksgiving and Christmas for the first time since 2018!
