Real Madrid are back in the fight for a coveted 15th UCL title, an unprecedented achievement and something that could top off a near perfect season. Their rivals, in the unlikely form of Borussia Dortmund, might not seem as dangerous on first glance - but they are definitely a side to be reckoned with. The German side has stumbled massively in their league this season, ending up in 5th position. While the Bundesliga might not be a cakewalk, a top 3 finish is one of the more achievable goals Dortmund would have at the start of every season. Amidst the speculation of who Carlo Ancelotti will start in goal for the Champions League final next week, there was another very interesting dilemma brewing. The question of who should partner Antonio Rüdiger in defense, given that Nacho has yet again provided a string of reliable performances over the past six weeks while Éder Militão has just recently returned from the cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for most of the season. And in all honesty, this was a debate worth having. That is, until last weekend’s La Liga showing against Villarreal, where an incredible Alexander Sørloth put four goals past Real Madrid’s defense inside 17 minutes. Four goals. Within 17 minutes, with a halftime break in between for good measure. It was a defense that consisted of a tired Rüdiger, a still-very-rusty Militão, and perhaps a slightly insecure Andriy Lunin. While yes, the league has been wrapped up and the players have likely shifted their focus fully to Wembley, it was still a worrying performance. Especially since Militão, having made only five starts since his return, looked out of sorts and made defensive errors in three of Sørloth’s four goals. But as Ancelotti put it, that is precisely what the remaining league games are there to do for the fringe players and the ones returning from injuries: give them low-stakes game time. Militão, unfortunately, hasn’t quite recovered as well as fellow cruciate ligament injury victim, Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian has put in a number of impressive performances in recent weeks and looks to have scraped off his rust a fair bit quicker than Militão. This, however, is not overly concerning. Even in Los Blancos’ recent La Liga wins, Militão hasn’t looked his most comfortable self, which, given his injury, is completely understandable. In the meantime, Nacho partnering Rüdiger is a more than sufficient solution, especially given their respective form and the overall team performance throughout the campaign. And if this is in fact to be Nacho’s last game as a Real Madrid player, then he couldn’t have asked for a better ending. One more game for one more medal for one of Real Madrid’s most treasured players.

The visitors dominated the game from the off and it took them less than 15 minutes to open the scoring. Brahim played in the Turkish wonderkid Arda Guler, who with his brilliant first touch, made space for himself and opened the scoring. With possession changing hands quite frequently, both teams had a few chances. At the half hour mark, it was Real Madrid who doubled their lead. Vazquez played in a cross for Joselu to head home his 10th league goal of the season. Villareal were given a way back into the game, when a Ceballos mistake allowed the hosts a goal back. Ceballos lost the ball om the edge of the penalty area, and Sorloth didn't miss a simple header to make it 2-1. However, within 1 minute, Real Madrid brought back the 2 goal lead, this time Vazquez being the scorer. In the dying minutes of the first half, Guler scored his 2nd after being played in brilliantly by Vazquez. In the second half, Villareal made an instant impact as they scored 2 goals in 5 minutes, both scored by Sorloth to secure his hattrick. Villareal completed baffled Madrid when they equalized from a quick counter. Brahim lost the ball in Villareal's half. Quickly on the counter, Moreno found Sorloth lurking inside the box, to score his 4th of the game, equalizing from 4-1 down to 4-4. Villareal kept pushing and pushing to take the lead, but couldn't find the back of the net. Madrid made a host of changes to take the lead again but couldn't. With 10 minutes remaining, Sorloth got a gilt-edged chance when he found himself on the end of a Guedes cross, but he couldn't deflect the shot inside the net. A very encouraging and entertaining attacking display in the first half, however a disappointing 2nd half with a poor defensive display.
