What do I do with my hands?!?! 🦖 People often inform me, “I have no idea what I am doing”, when we start our session or on our intake call. My response is always “no one does”! Cause, unless you grew up with a photographer in your home or as a model/actress… you shouldn’t expect yourself to know! My job is to put you at ease. To allow you to sink into the moment and feel a sense of connection and play. To focus on an emotion or a feeling and allow it to guide us. If you need to laugh, laugh damnit! We are not here for rigid and staged moments. The way I work with my clients in posing is helping them find the pose and then telling them to move and settle into it. I make jokes, ask questions and ultimately play with you. I invite you to let go of your idea of how it “should” feel and allow yourself to settle into the potential of feeling embodied. To witness this process and help people settle into it is truly a gift. This is a lifelong skill I have developed alongside my incredible mother who started this company 20 years ago! For our two prom weekends, I am offering 30-minute mini sessions so students can get photos in their suits and gowns at the Mendenhall Glacier. ✨Living life with Joy!✨ Now in this case it’s not only an emotion, but her name. Joy is a friend of mine now, and I am thankful for that! But that wasn’t always the case. We actually went to the same high school! I knew OF her but never met her personally in those 4 years. She was one of the prettiest and most popular girls (at least in my mind, she may say differently) as well as a cheerleader and always seemed so happy and nice. But our paths never crossed. Flash forward ~18-19 years later. I get this really nice lady commenting on my photos and sending me messages and being a total sweetheart. I didn’t know Joy by her married last name. So I had no clue who she was and she lived in Alaska so figured she was just a fan who found me randomly one day. Our 20 year high school reunion was being planned and she mentioned it to me. I was confused, who was this person? I hadn’t really creeped through her profile to see who she was and I think she was even “private” and I had not started following her. Then when she told me her maiden name I had a lightbulb moment! “You’re THAT Joy?!” Suddenly I’m becoming fast friends with the “most popular” girl I knew of in HS and she likes ME and MY work?! The teen girl in me felt good & justified in a weird way as high school was rough for a loner band geek like me. So when I was coming to Juneau for a session I knew that we had to meet up again and I wanted to photograph her and her husband Nelson. It was so great catching up and seeing her life now in Alaska and she is even funnier and nicer than I remember and still just as beautiful!
