Their steamy faces and gleaming eyes evoke tranquility amid the sulphuric waters, capturing the essence of Japanese macaque photography. However, these moments are fleeting, regularly interrupted by hierarchical skirmishes. A bucket of raw barley and soybeans (an incentive from the park to encourage the primates to stay within protected territory rather than venturing into the villages below) is enough to ignite a frenzy among the monkeys. Japan Trip Highlights Part 4: Noboribetsu Jigokudani, or "Hell's Valley" National Park in the northern island of Hokkaido was otherworldly. The steam from the natural sulfuric hot spring is visible all around with imagery of the demons living in "Hell" scattered around town . This is Noboribetsu 🔥 We can honestly say that this is one of the most unique places we've been to in Japan. First hitchhiking trip in Japan (w/@princeyu_ta0118), first time I saw a real cise (ainu house) and so many other things linked to my beloved ainu culture, second time I've done Couchsurfing (at @jitenshamama 's house) : this trip to Shiraoi & Noboribetsu will definitely remain one of my Hokkaido's best memories! . Shiraoi is a small town of around 16,000 residents and house to one of the most active Ainu communities in Hokkaido, that's why the city was chosen to host Upopoy National Museum and Park, the biggest museum dedicated to Ainu culture in Japan (@ainumuseumpark). As a Ainu culture lover, I had to go there and I'm glad I did because it's now one of my favorite museums ever!! I spent more than 4 hours there, reading almost everything, attending performances, trying out workshops (sewing ainu pattern on a coaster) and just enjoying every moment at the closest of this culture I love ✨️ . Noboribetsu is an onsen town known for its Jigokudani (Hell Valley), a 11-hectare crater created by the volcanic activity of Mt. Hiyori. There are numerous openings and fumaroles along the valley, and that's why the scenery of bubbling and boiling water inspired the name “Oni no sumu jigoku” (Where the demon’s live). Winter was probably not the best season to visit Jigokudani - the place still remains really impressive - but it was for bathing in an onsen ♨️ . Locations ↓ 1-6.
