What a weekend at #InteractiveFutures in Leamington Spa! 🎮 🕹 It was fantastic to see so much interest in our local gaming industry, from primary school age, right through to graduates and potential career changers. We dedicate a lot of time going out to schools and colleges to educate students on their options for a career in games, so it’s always rewarding to come together as an industry to do this too. We also have to mention how good it was to catch up with plenty of familiar faces from our neighbouring studios over the two days, plus hear a lot of brilliant insight and positivity in the speaker sessions. Our very own @chrismack732 chaired a panel highlighting roles within the industry with some incredibly talented artists, community managers and programmers. @mattwestern_mp dropped by too, where we were able to share the TKG story of an independent studio that has thrived in our community and talk about the work we do with local education partners.

That sounds ambitious. I agree. . So how do we get there? . Eliminate the biggest barriers to foresight which is cost and accessibility. Gather the most curious minds to discuss our hopes and fears about the future while leveraging the sharp insights of the community and leaders through events, content, resources, co-working, courses and, last but not least, futuring spaces. . As a community of future thinkers, passionate about exchange, research and learning, we must take stock. What we say can be a powerful catalyst for change and critical thinking for others, and the lack of uncompromising future insights has consequences. . Future Foresight shouldn’t be prescriptive or get too comfortable in the obvious soundbites of today. Writing advice: I'm finding out about writing for videogames at Interactive Futures! This is an event where people from all areas of the game industry come to teach people about careers in their companies. The gaming industry is growing rapidly, so if you love gaming and writing this could be the career for you. The industry advice is that if you enjoy writing and gaming, try downloading some software such as Twine and build up a portfolio of different styles of narrative games. If a company see that your style matches theirs, they'll hire you. The key skills they're looking for are teamwork and adaptability. Unlike some other forms of writing, this isn't just your vision, it's your team's vision. In narrative design, you have to work collaboratively with artists, designers, programmers ect to create a cohesive final product. Here's where adaptability comes into it: if the level designer changes an aspect of a level, you have to be willing to change the whole narrative to fit around that. Taking part in group projects at university can help teach these skills. The general advice is that going to university will strengthen your application as there are many skills you can learn there. However, if you have enough self discipline to teach yourself these skills through online courses and practice you can still become a writer for games. So don't feel pressured to go to university if it really isn't right for you! Think about sidestepping. The hardest thing about the industry is wedging your foot in the door. Then once you're in, you can work your way over to your desired career. Think about other skills you have. Could you apply as an artist, HR, project managing recruitment? Then after a couple of years in those roles, you can sidestep over to narrative design. Hope all this advice helps!
