The fluffy fried bread they are served with is reason enough to order it, even if the fillings are just average. The peanut butter French toast ($7.99) has a thin layer of its namesake ingredient, sandwiched by two thick slices of their excellent bread. This thoroughly Macanese version of high tea (“cha gordo” means fat tea in Portuguese) mostly reserved for special occasions includes hours of fun for all ages, a dozen or more dishes, and of course plenty of hot tea. Now Los Angeles has a place to indulge in this merging of Cantonese and Portuguese treats. While there are a decent amount of Hong Kong-style cafés (called a “cha chaan tang”) in the San Gabriel Valley, this is the first that shares the culture of Macau with Southern California. Kees Bistro & Bar, Carpenter Street: When your back is pressed to the wall, you make good use of the small space. Miniscule @kees.sg is a lot smaller than the clever pictures you see on your IG and PR spins. Goliath it is not, but it scores points for the premium finishings and sophisticated intimate setting, in line with @21carpenter_sg Food is a hit and miss, as much as I dreaded to say that. I wanted it to border on perfection to match the interior styling. Chocolate mousse was snagged the top of the prize. It’s clever clever clever - an unfathomed play of rich pandan kaya (this should be bottled and sold) with rich chocolate mousse. Pandan meringue was a delight. Second in tow was mushroom croquette. We wanted to order a few more. Overpriced laksa is an overcast of dark clouds. While the scallop was perfect, the thick gravy missed a flavour hit. Burrata was brow-raising but the burrata was rather tasteless and the beetroot made up for the lack of taste. Tuna tartare was gorgeous on its own but once you savour the sauce, you cringe like a child tasting lemon for the first time. The citrus was a total sour. A little let down?
