Fueled by revenge, Duke beats the Battle Android Trooper to death with its own severed head as Destro escapes, destroying his compound on his way out. While the media clears his name as they report his death, Duke awakens in a hospital bed and is offered a new opportunity by Colonel Hawk. Returning to the Pit, their new team’s base of operations, Duke is reunited with Clutch as he learns of the existence of even more robots operating in disguise. I loved Duke cutting loose and destroying the BAT. This was a good series. I’m excited to see what names and faces will be popping up to fill out the GI Joe roster. I can’t wait to see my guy Storm Shadow eventually show up but as of right now I’m excited for the upcoming Destro series. I love his delayed reaction when the kidnapped scientist asked if he were there to rescue him. I’m excited to see where Cobra Commander goes from now that he knows that Golobulus wants him dead. I’m eager to see the meeting and union between him and Destro. This series has been so good and I’ve really enjoyed every issue. This series has made me want to bust out all of my old GI Joe action figures. I had so many. If only I somehow were able to get paid to read comics and play with my old toys. The Energon series has been a lot of fun for me. I never read any GI Joe or Transformers books and didn’t care for the live action movies. I only ever played with the toys and watched the 80’s cartoon religiously. It’s been really cool and nostalgic returning to this world. But to do so would be foolish and reckless. As they carry onward, Proximus suddenly makes his presence known in epic fashion. Darak’s blaster is useless against him but Solila is able to pierce his armor with her spear, but even still the two are no match. Darak’s Handroid initiates an explosion and in the chaos, Proximus launches the spear and as the dust settles, Darak finds Solila stabbed through the back of her chest. So Proximus is definitely Solila’s brother. That’s interesting. It seems like she knows who he is, but I’m curious if he is aware. I’m very eager to learn more of Proximus’ back story. He immediately became the most intriguing character of this series to me. I’m very curious where Void Rivals fits in with the rest of the Energon Universe. Personally I feel as if this happened a long time ago in comparison to the other books. At the Dreadnoks club house, Zarana addresses the gang over making a trade of their new energy source to advance their place in the world until they are interrupted by her twin brother, Zandar, who has Cobra Commander, bound with chains. The gang attempt to torture their guest who is unphased and begins mentally manipulating them, turning the Dreadnoks against each other. After activating his tracking device, Cobra Commander’s guardian appears and after shedding his skin, takes the form of a terrifying winged creature and begins ripping the ruthless gang to shreds. I loved the artwork in this issue. Ripper drawing a smiley face in blood on Cobra Commander’s mask, and it remaining there for the rest of the issue, had me cracking up. I hope he just leaves it for the next few issues. I loved that while he was tied up, Cobra Commander was the one actually committing the torture by his manipulations. Like everything regarding the Energon universe, my knowledge is limited to the 80’s cartoon and associated action figures, so I’m very excited to learn as we go. I remember loving the Dreadnoks so hopefully the guardian doesn’t go too hard on them. In a room shrouded in red light and without his armor, Zalilak requests the aid of a former rival in apprehending the wayward Solila before his worst fears could be made reality. The warrior agrees and suddenly a fully armored Zalilak unplugs himself as a limbless torso is removed from a stasis chamber and revived with a cybernetic body. The warrior, Proximus, herald as the most deadly of his people, arms himself and sets out after his prey. Meanwhile, as Darak and Solila move closer through the Wastelands, Solila attempts at discreetly alerting her sisters with the Keepers of the Light of her progress raise suspicions with Darak. This was without a doubt my favorite issue of Void Rivals. Proximus seems like an awesome character and I enjoyed the dynamic with Zalilak. I would love to learn more of their history. It caught me off guard when they revealed that the interaction between the two wasn’t physically in person but rather wired into Proximus’ stasis pod. In the chaos, Major Bludd gains the advantage over Duke and with a gun to his head demands he hand over Burkhart’s device. After boasting of the hefty bounty placed over Duke’s head a bullet suddenly pierces the back of Major Bludd’s skull as the Baroness seeks to claim the prize for herself. I always loved Major Blood! My first thought seeing him was, where’s the eye patch?! Now we know how he lost that eye. This series has been a lot of fun and I can’t wait for other characters I’m familiar with to be introduced. This has got me wanting to dig out all my old action figures. When Cobra Commander believes himself to find that which he seeks, he suddenly falls into the murky water below as has swarmed by massive alligators with glowing eyes. I’ve always loved Cobra Commander. He was such an unintentionally hilarious villain to me. This was the book I was most looking forward to in the Energon universe and so far I have not been disappointed. I’m eager to see the first meeting between Cobra Coma Commander and Destro. The Constructicons!!! Yes! Those were always my favorite. Transformers plays out exactly as you’d expect any book from Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer. It bleeds with love and compassion on every page. Daniel Warren Johnson is not just a highly talented writer, but a true artist. He and Mike Spicer are absolutely one of the greatest teams in modern comics. What I wouldn’t give for these two to be handed the reigns of a high profile Marvel property. Let these two have free reign over the Avengers or Fantastic Four. I would be in Heaven. Before Duke and Clutch can formulate a plan they are suddenly attacked and captured by two highly reputable operatives, Rock ‘N Roll and Stalker, and thrown into the Pit, an off the books prison under order of Colonel Hawk. But the two are not without allies as they are greeted by a woman clad in black from the next cell over, proposing they combine their efforts in breaking free. I’m really enjoying this series so far. I love that Duke picked up on the fact that they were being herded rather than straight up attacked. I was honestly expecting them not to be brought to a jail but rather being brought into a GI Joe complex and brought into something deeper. The Baroness being locked up along with them definitely spices things up and I’m eager to see how treacherous she can be. Majority of my GI Joe knowledge comes from the 80’s cartoon and toy line, so I’m essentially coming at this as an open canvas. Ratchet offers Optimus a way to heal himself and the Autobots decide to go on the offense. Meanwhile, Starscream and Soundwave cannibalize Skywarp to repair themselves while Starscream takes delight in his position of power. All the while unaware that the former ruler of the Decepticons, Megatron, lays not too far away frozen in the ice. Is that Megatron? I think so. My Transformers knowledge is so dated. Who is Cobra Commander siphoning energy from because I also assumed that it was Megatron. These robots need name tags. I love Daniel Warren Johnson’s story telling and all the heart and emotion thrown into his work. The only thing better than his writing is his nearly perfect artwork along with Mike Spicer. I would absolutely love it if the pair were given control of a top Marvel property at some point. However, the scientist proves his worth and is allowed to carry forth with his mission. The scientist returns to his lab where he keeps an enormous robotic being as his prisoner, siphoning its energy. With a new name, the scientist ventures into the world beyond Cobra-La, following energy signatures matching that of his robotic prisoner. The scientist throws caution to the wind and is determined to strike fear into the world as Cobra Commander! It dawned on me that I know so little of Cobra Commander’s origin. All I know of him I learned from the 80’s cartoon. Which if anything, the Energon universe is really making me want to go back and watch all of those old shows. This was a great introductory issue. I loved the artwork and the fact that we’re not left wondering what happened to his face. There were a lot of great moments in this issue and the first few pages succeeded in capturing my attention. Cobra Commander’s character is violently awesome. This is probably the Energon book that I’m most excited for. Apparently Duke is so badass that he can get shot like 10 times and survive. Besides that I enjoyed this book and am interested to see where it goes. I always appreciate Tom Reilly’s artwork. Remembering the fragility of life on Earth, Optimus rips off his damaged arm, beating Skywarp with it, determined to save Sam’s life. That scene of Optimus Prime slamming into Skywarp has to be seen. It was without a doubt the best panel this series has delivered so far. Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer are the ultimate artistic team and there is no one better than them to be steering this new era of Transformers. Meanwhile, the Skuxxoid leads the Quintessons to the Aggorian/Zertonian hybrid vessel who are more than intrigued by the existence of Zertonians. I’m so out of touch with the Transformers that I have no idea if I should know who the Quintessons are. However I’m enjoying having to put things together as I go. I’m very curious where Void Rivals falls in the timeline of this new Energon Universe of comics we have opening up before us. One thing I like about this series is that both Darak and Solila have always been likable characters. This issue really hammered down Solila’s compassion showing us why she fights and makes the choices she does. One thing I’ve always loved about Daniel Warren Johnson is how much heart is felt throughout his work. Everything is so emotional. Optimus Prime discovers the fragility of life on Earth was a very touching scene. I was curious how GI Joe was going to be integrated into this new shared universe. Duke’s introduction scene was pretty great. I was genuinely surprised when he busted out that jetpack. So far this series is off to a great start. One thing I’ve been wondering since the beginning is where Void Rivals will fall in the timeline of the Energon Universe? Is this series occurring at the same time as the Transformers series? In my opinion Void Rivals is occurring years in the past. But who knows. Anything is possible. Maybe I’m way off and this is years after the Transformers series. I feel like how issue one ended with Jetfire awakening and then later appearing in Transformers was all misdirection. Definitely showcased and emphasized by Spike’s broken family. I’m essentially an outsider looking in at this point because the last time I cared about the Transformers was when I was watching the cartoon in the 80’s. My only complaint about this issue was that there should have been a giant Murder Falcon spreader airbrushed aside Carly’s van. I’m really excited to see where this story goes and I know given the creative team’s track record, it’s going to be excellent! Hoping to be used as a bargain chip, Darak is put in a holding cell while Solila presents herself before Zalilak. When Solila expresses gratitude that Darak’s life will be spared, Zalilak questions her behavior and already knowing the answer, inquires if the two ever removed their helmets during their time together. Much to Darak’s amusement, Solila is thrown into Darak’s cell, joining him in his imprisonment. Meanwhile in secret, Zalilak removes his own helmet while reaching out to Darak’s father of the Agorrian Empire who grants him the go ahead to keep their secret by any means necessary. The artwork in this series is so good. Additionally, the cover art here is my favorite one yet. I love how intimidating Premier Zalilak appears sitting on his throne. Giving off some major Emperor Palpatine vibes here. This was a great issue that reinforces how corrupt the Zertonian and Agorrian governments are and the lengths they’ll take to maintain their secrecy. I’m excited to see what’s in store for us in Transformers by @danielwarrenart when it drops next week. The preview pages at the end of this issue look amazing. The Skuxxoid heads them off at the hanger bay and offers a bargain, trading them a fully functional ship in exchange for the rare alloys infused in their own ship. After coming upon the Great Ring, the two thank each other and prepare to go their separate ways until Darak is suddenly betrayed by Solila! So far this book has just been a lot of fun. I’m so excited to read Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer’s Transformers and am very interested in how everything connects back to Void Rivals. I really appreciate that this is its own story and we’re not just jumping straight into Autobots and Decepticons. Now Darak and Solila realize the awful truth, that all was based on a lie. The two construct a functioning vessel off the wreckage of what remains of their separate ships. While Solila struggles with the guilt and thought of betraying her people, Darak is simply great full for a way off this desolate rock. After taking flight, the pair set off towards the Great Ring in hope someone out there will pick up their transponder before their oxygen supply runs dry. Suddenly a giant asteroid begins following them and they are brought aboard a ship integrated with the rock and taken captive by the Skuxxoid! This was a great issue. I loved the first issue because of the twist but this one was great from start to finish. I’m glad that it seems like Void Rivals will continue its focus on Darak, Solila and the conflict between their people. I’m beyond excited to see what the Transformer’s spin-off series have in store for us.
