What a treat it has been to be back on Folegandros this week for the opening of @gundari_resort 🙌🙌🙌. Gundari’s (Australian) founder, Ricardo Larriera, and I first connected about 6 months ago when I got word of his very exciting new project. To be here now feels a bit surreal. Meaning ‘rocky place’, Gundari was the name given to the island of Folegandros (Giundari) by its ancient Phoenician inhabitants. Set on 80 acres in the south-eastern part of the island, atop rocky cliffs, its location feels wild and remote (but is still only 10min drive from town). All you see is blue! An unmade, bumpy road for the last part of the journey only adds to the adventure of getting there - I pleaded with Ricardo to please never pave the road !! It’s the best. Gundari’s design is in total harmony with the surrounding landscape, reminding me in some little way of Amangiri (but in Greece, not in Utah!). For a brand new hotel, in its very first few days of operation, the hotel team have been slick and impressive. A big shout-out to Fanis (the very experienced restaurant and bar manager from Athens) for making me an insanely good margarita, and for introducing me to Earth & Sky’s Xinomavro rosé - while their red wine is already one of my favourites, I had never tried the rosé. And a big thank you to Tiffany the spa manager (another Australian! Who used to run the day spa at Australia’s highly lauded and iconic, Halcyon House) and Chrissie (not Australian! But who spent the last 5 years living in Byron Bay, where I lived as well before moving to Athens) for an exceptional facial. I had never before had a facial where ice spoons are used? A dream. Ricardo has big plans for Gundari with a little wine bar opening soon and a farm-to-table dining experience; cooking classes with a local yiayia in a nearby village; a new subterranean day spa built into the rocky caves on the cliffs; and much more. Για όλους το Γυθειο είναι αυτό ακριβώς «μια μικρή πόλη στη θάλασσα»..για μένα είναι όλα τα καλοκαίρια των παιδικών μου χρόνων ..στις παραλίες του τα παιδικά πατουσακια μου άγγιξαν πρώτη φορά την άμμο και το δροσερό θαλασσινό νερό κρατώντας το χέρι του μπαμπά ..στη θάλασσα αυτή έβγαλα τα μπρατσάκια μου και ήπια μπόλικο νερό ..το χέρι του μπαμπά ήταν πάλι εκεί ..έχτισα πύργους στην άμμο και το νερό τους διέλυε..μα με ακατάβλητο πάθος τους ξανά έφτιαχνα ..τηγανίτες και μυρωδάτα κεφτεδάκια με κυνηγούσε η μαμα να φάω και ύστερα φωνές μη μπεις τώρα στη θάλασσα ..κλάμα να μείνουμε ακόμη λιγο ..ποτέ δεν ήταν αρκετό …κι ύστερα παγωτό …αντίδωρο γιατί φύγαμε από τη θάλασσα..κι αν ήταν πύραυλος ;;φρίκη στο βλέμμα της μαμας ..χέρια καταλερωμενα με λιωμένο παγωτό .. Για μένα το Γυθειο είναι πολλά περισσότερα από μια γραφική πόλη στη θάλασσα ..είναι η ατόφια χαρα και ξενοιασιά που ο χρόνος και η ζωη ξεθώριασαν .. Yesterday was my name day here in Greece 🤓. Yes, I’m a total dork for acknowledging this but I was pretty pumped when the texts, instagram messages and phone calls started rolling in from gorgeous friends here wishing me “Χρόνια πολλά!” !! It was my first official name day really. I was obviously here in Athens for it last year but I didn’t really know how it all worked : ), and I certainly didn’t know the date for the Γεώργιος and Γεωργία day (which is always changing because of Easter). For those of you back home who don’t really know either, name days originate from the Greek Orthodox calendar, where every day is woven with the threads of saints and holy figures. For Greeks, a name day transcends a birthday. It’s a celebration marking the feast day of the saint who shares your name (or its meaning). So it’s like another birthday really, another big reason to celebrate. And I’m all about that. Thanks to those who made my first proper name day special. 😘 #greecemylove #itsbeautifulhere

ΥΔΡΑ ❣️. I’ve been to Hydra many times before but never for Greek Easter. It’s a very beautiful time to be on the island. I love the islands at this time of year, there’s a strong sense of anticipation and excitement before the season really kicks off and the chaos begins. While I am not religious, I do love learning about the Greek Orthodox traditions and rituals. It’s ritual that I love. Last year I chose to spend my first Greek Easter on the island of Tinos, another island I very much adore and return to often. It was the first time I had experienced Holy Friday and the traditional Epitaphios processions - it was an incredible moment in time. In Hydra, we experienced it again but a much more tiny and cosy version starting in the little church of Aghios Ioannis Prodromos in Kaminia, following the Epitaph procession through the winding cobblestone streets into the sea. The Epitaph is taken into the sea to bless and sanctify the water, ensuring a safe journey for all sailors; a custom started by the sponge divers of Kaminia back in 1923 whose sponge boats departed after the Sunday of the Holy Cross and returned close to the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It is a lovely tradition to witness. And then of course, we lit our candles at midnight on Saturday… and ate our lamb on Easter Sunday : ). The weather was sunny and rainy and everything in between, a perfect Hydra weekend with some very dear friends. It’s beautiful here. #greecemylove #itsbeautifulhere

Moją ulubioną miejscowością na Rodos jest miasteczko Lindos. Samo w sobie jest oczywiście warte zwiedzenia. Poza tym jest pięknie położone przy dwóch zatokach. Mniejsza z nich to Zatoka św. Pawła, gdzie znajduje się urocza kameralna plaża z niesamowitym kolorem wody i cudownymi widokami wokół. Przed sezonem było tam bardzo przyjemnie i spokojnie😊 Zatoka św.
