Ghost Rider’s Ghost Fire Cycle - Ghost Rider: Flamin’ Stunt Cycles - Toy Biz 1995 - I’m going to confess to being at a complete loss as to why there was a kid-orientated Ghost Rider toy line in 1995. There were a lot of Marvel properties on the pegs at this point, but Ghost Rider had no animated series, and the tale of a man possessed by a demon that turns him into the Spirit of Vengeance isn’t standard Saturday morning fare. It’s all the more baffling when Captain America was right there but at the same time…10 year old me actually read Ghost Rider and this toyline was awesome so no real complaints here. While there was the standard lines of action figures and scale motorcycles, there were also 3 of these smaller, pull cord ‘Flamin’ Stunt Cycles’ released, which really drives home how much this was orientated at kids, for reference; I don’t believe any such purely child orientated smaller toys exist for Iron Man or Fantastic Four who DID have cartoons. I always hated pull back and go nonsense but this was ridiculously cheap so I had it. It’s nicely done, figure and bike are well detailed with some near glow in the dark parts, even if I never loved that bike design, nor do I remember it being teal coloured. What’s stranger is that the line of cycles released in scale with the action figure line each came with a repainted version of their designated rider, and for some reason for this line Toy Biz decided to also use the repaint colour schemes for the riders. This wasn’t a problem for the main line, as you could replace the free figure with the correct coloured one if you had him, these guys were stuck in place! Vengeance’s Steel Skeleton Cycle - Ghost Rider: Spirits of Vengeance - Toy Biz 1995 - Given the Ghost Rider character’s dependence on his motorcycle as part of his character, it was kind of a necessity to make one as part of the toyline, but I do enjoy the fact Toy Biz went the extra mile and done ones for all 3 of the Spirits of Vengeance. I never particularly cared for the Ghost Rider bike design they used, and never liked Blaze that much full stop, which left Vengeance, whom I’ve already confessed to having a massive soft spot for as my 90s edgy alternative hero. His bike is easily the coolest of the 3 in the line, albeit it’s still not perfect, the glow in the dark flames on the wheels look really bad for a 1995 Toy Biz release, but otherwise it looks nice in default state. The 2 action features fall a bit flat though. There’s a spring-loaded missile launcher in the front, which you can conceal…but only when the missile isn’t in it, meaning you either have to sit it aside or have him drive about with the awkward flap up. The other is a ‘swiping tail’ which is a cool idea in principle, but it’s too short so if there’s a figure sat on the bike it’s literally useless as a figure is wider than its range. As a neat touch it includes a repaint of the Series 1 Vengeance figure, which is a neat touch they didn’t need to do. Outcast - Ghost Rider - Toy Biz 1995 - I’ve been critical of the villains in this line, but I’ll confess to always having had a soft spot for Outcast. I think his character was just like a feral beast, which makes his weird skull-in-a-box-on-a-fishing-Rod even more odd, but his giant claw is so awesome I forgive it for not staying in place well. The sculpt of the figure just feels more Toy Biz in their pomp than a lot of this line, and his spring loaded slashing arm a lot more ‘classic’ a feature that you could work around while playing with. Armoured Blaze - Ghost Rider - Toy Biz 1995 - I was never overly into Johnny Blaze, Marvel’s original Ghost Rider they brought back as a sort of mentor for Danny Ketch in the 90s. As such I wasn’t fussed about the original Blaze figure in Series 1, and think I only wound up with this one because of slim pickings at the toy store, however I would up really liking him. I forget, but I think the story in the mini comics revolves around the ‘hellfire’ left in Blaze from his spell as Ghost Rider going out of control, so he built this armour to contain it. This is evidenced in both of his gimmicks; a light up torso and removable armour pieces that show the erupting hellfire. The former works great, the latter…I’m less sold on. The armour is too bulky and when taken off the holes are ugly. I’d rather they just made his eye light up too. So what sold me on him? His hellfire shotgun. This line was weird for figures not really having hands sculpted for melee combat, but also a lack of cool weapons. Exploding Ghost Rider - Ghost Rider - Toy Biz 1995 - Ok, here’s a confusing one for you. This guy, who is clearly based on the Evel Knievel inspired jumpsuit Johnny Blaze wore as the original Ghost Rider, was sold as ‘Exploding’ Ghost Rider, which does work given his special feature, but there is a figure in this line that’s clearly based on the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider sold as ‘Original Ghost Rider’. And I’m further adding to the confusion by having the wrong mini-comic in the picture with him. I quite liked this figure though. Usual complaints about lack of ball jointed shoulders and a punching hand, but his flaming shield is kinda neat, the exploding feature works well, and he looks cool. Skinner - Ghost Rider - Toy Biz 1995 - I’ve already bemoaned this line’s villains, and squandering of potential for the ones it did use. While there was no cartoon to draw characters from, the figures did all include mini comics, and how they managed to leave the main antagonist they selected, Zarathos, to series 2 is mind blowing. Skinner isn’t a particularly memorable baddie, however his ability to grow skeletal protrusions and use them as weapons could be exploited into a cool toy. This? This isn’t that cool. I mean he’s not bad, nice and bulky, but he’s got 2 special features in one, and neither of them any good. Both are activated by squeezing his legs together, the first is basically the same as Vengeance’s underwhelming clawing ribs, but worse in that these are soft, rubbery and spindly, so just look and feel even more rubbish. This also makes his arms swing forwards in an intended punching/slashing motion but to be honest it looks more like a chicken flapping its wings. I’m sure this is a shared feature with another Marvel figure but I can’t think who, and definitely isn’t worth sacrificing elbow articulation for. Blackout - Ghost Rider - Toy Biz 1995 - As much as I love this line, I’ve got to confess what let it down was the villains. I mean a hero with a flaming skull is. Tough act to follow, but in a lot of cases Toy Biz, quite unusually, really dropped the ball with regards to the figures themselves regardless of character. Blackout I was familiar with from the comics, a vampiric villain who drained the life force from his victims. I don’t actually hate this figure, truth be told it looks quite good when static. The line had a gimmick of glow in the dark parts and in a neat move Toy Biz actually made all of his exposed skin glow in the dark, giving him a genuinely eerie appearance. It’s his action figure I feel is a bit ‘meh’. It’s the vintage ‘Vampire Attack’ action dating all the way back to Kenner’s Real Ghostbusters line, where squeezing his legs makes his arms raise and mouth open. I’ll concede the open mouth works unusually well, but I’d rather just have had Poseable arms. Vengeance - Ghost Rider - Toy Biz 1995 - I’m normally very critical of characters that show their age too much, particularly if that age originated in the 1990s where pouches, shoulder pads and guns were oversized and impossible to draw consistently. It was also a decade where ‘edgy’ versions of heroes who often toed the line between friend and foe went into overdrive. Venom got so popular he got a face-turn. I find it hard not to see War Machine & US Agent as his contemporaries, even if they were less antagonistic. The forgotten son here is Vengeance. I mean how do you make Ghost Rider, a biker with a flaming skull, MORE edgy?! You make that flaming skull purple. With spikes. And tusks. I had a comic with Vengeance gorilla pressing Ghost Rider on the cover and I’m not even pretending 9 year old me didn’t think he was the most badass thing ever so you can imagine my elation when I got this toy. By that point he was firmly in the ‘Ally’ column but you could not possibly make him uncool to me. The figure is…mixed. Head looks awesome, and while he’s got the right musculature and girth, he really should have been taller, this makes him feel more short and stocky than the powerhouse I saw him as. His action feature, button activated ‘clawing’ action from his protruding ribs was a bit useless, but also meant his limbs weren’t compromised. My only other gripes aren’t specific to this figure, but the line itself - why balljointed hips but normal shoulders, and the lack of clenched fists. The latter especially annoyed me here as he had no weapons.
