Sam Pankey is an upright and electric bassist who has performed and recorded internationally with a variety of artists, including Balmorhea, Elias Haslanger, Heartless Bastards, Jon Irabagon, Kevin Lovejoy, Marmalakes, Mother Falcon, Star Parks, and many more. After studying Jazz Performance at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas, he competed in the Scott LaFaro Jazz Bass competition, where he was a semi-finalist. In 2021, he released an EP of his own music entitled “A Bad Rhyme That’s Beaten You.” Sam continues to record, perform, and teach in the Austin, Texas area in a wide variety of genres. Musician Spotlight📣✨Masumi Jones is the drummer at our Spring fundraiser, Jazz for JASGA, on Thursday, March 23rd. Limited tickets on sale now. Masumi Jones started playing big band jazz while at Waseda University High Society Orchestra before moving to the United States in 1995 to study at the Berklee College of Music. Masumi sojourned in Japan between 2000-2008, touring with Blue Aeronauts Orchestra (Avex), then settling in Austin. She has played with such local Austin bands as the Rich Harney Trio, Alex Coke Quartet, Mitch Watkins Trio, Jitterbug Vipers, Sarah Sharp, 35mm, Austin Jazz Workshop, Tapestry Tap Dance Company, and the Austin Artist Project (Sing Out!). Her own group, “Masumi and the Gentlemen' had a weekly residency at Lambert's BBQ from 2011 up until 2017 and had a weekly live-stream ‘Jazz at Noon.’ The Jitterbug Vipers won Austin Chronicle Music Poll best jazz band in 2014 and Masumi herself won the best drummer that same year. The reunited Japanese piano trio G.G. (the former Groovin' Girls from 90’s Boston) was featured in the short documentary film 'Jazz Abroad' in 2016, and she was featured on the NPR Live Sessions 'Love Austin Music Profile' on March 2020. The Japanese Ministry of Education recognizes 2,000 kanji officially; this can seem intimidating to a new learner. JASGA’s Kanji Kinyoubi aims to introduce one commonly used kanji every week to make that Herculean task more attainable. (かんじ - kanji, Chinese character; きんようび - kinyoubi, Friday) Today’s Kanji Kinyoubi is 学, meaning ‘study’ or ‘learning’. This character’s kunyomi, or Japanese pronunciation, is ‘mana’, while its onyomi, or Chinese derivation, is pronounced ‘gaku’. It is seen in many words, such as 学生, pronounced gakusei (student); 大学, pronounced daigaku (university); and 学ぶ, pronounced manabu (to study in depth). Are/were you a 学生? A native Houstonian and High School for the Performing and Visual Arts alumnus, Kevin is a pianist, keyboardist, composer, and producer who studied with Mary Norris at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and Ellis Marsalis at the University of New Orleans. He has toured extensively with Fastball, Spoon, Michelle Branch, Daniel Powter, and John Mayer. In addition to countless studio credits, he arranged and produced Kat Edmonson’s debut album, co-wrote her hit song “Lucky”, and continues to lead the Kevin Lovejoy Trio with bassist Sam Pankey and drummer Daniel Dufour.
