💩 Shit happens No matter how much we plan ahead. No matter how prepared we might be. There are things we cannot foresee and plan for. I guess we all learned that lesson in 2020. But one thing we can do is have a financial buffer to help us in unforeseen situations. I used to call this buffer a “safety pillow“ until I met @marekcanavan who beautifully called it a “shit happens“ fund. “Shit happens, it’s out of your control. BUT...what's not cool is putting 'URGENT' in the subject line, asking to book in ASAP, popping up every single platform, and then 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐢𝐫 as soon as the proposal's sent. Or so the stories say. • Every day I see a new headline praising the virtues of working for yourself and hyping the idea of starting your own business. I’ve run my own freelance design business since I was in university - 8 years ago. It’s the only work I’ve ever known. I absolutely love it, and wouldn’t dream of trading it for the most stable, well-paying 9–5 employment. So this may sound odd coming from someone like me: seriously - think twice before you become a freelancer. Freelancing is not for everyone. It’s okay if it’s not right for you. • Freelancing is twice as much work as you’re doing now. Not only are you doing the same hands-on work you usually do, you’re also responsible for all the extra responsibility that comes along with running your own business. • So what are your true reasons for wanting to freelance? Do you think that if you can take control of your work, you’ll finally be happy? Do you think the “freedom” of choosing your clients and making your own schedule will bring you fulfilment you’ve never had from work before? Or are you just looking for some way you can “follow your passion” and turn something you love into a career? There’s nothing wrong with wanting those things. Freelancing can give you those things! But is freelancing the best way to get them, for you? It’s not a magic happiness pill. There will be no instant gratification. • You need to choose freelancing, not because it’s the cool thing to do, but for the right calculated reasons. It requires complete commitment to building a professional micro-business, and dedication to producing excellent work for the long-haul. Because when you’re a freelancer your personal brand and reputation means everything. • If freelancing is right for you, and you follow through with it, there’s nothing better. But what’s right for me isn’t necessarily right for you or anyone else. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Chart your own path that suits your professional strengths and weaknesses 🤎

Okay, so this is Honesty Wednesday, where I'm being 'brutally' honest (with you and with myself). You might have noticed that you haven't been seeing any posts from me here, even though I wanted to be more active on social media. And I truly wanted it to work. But then life happened. 💩 happened. We’ve had and are still going through some tough times in our family. Some members of my family need support. And I have to manage my own emotional and mental health in addition to everything else that's going on. That consumes a lot of my energy and to be honest, maybe I allowed it to consume a bit too much of my energy this year. And while hindsight is 20/20 and I no longer want to beat myself up about it (which I’ve done countless times, rest assured) ... ... I've added this phrase to my list of mantras: "Me and my business deserve to take up space." Other people's actions take up space. Their needs take up space. And sometimes we let them take that space, in our schedule, in our minds, in our emotions. (I assume you might have gone through the same at some point as well? Just assuming here...) And that's okay. But I still need to be, I WANT to be in the driver's seat. I want to be intentional about how much energy I give other people and their actions. I deserve to take up space as well. My business deserves to take up space too. If you resonate with any of that... Think about where you could take up at bit more space, or ask for some space (for your own well-being). And if you could use someone who's offering a bit of space to talk things through that are on your mind, I'd be happy to.
